Yes, sire. Princess Elice bade us protect you.

Abel (アベル Aberu), is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi, Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, and their remakes. He is a cavalier of Altea who is known as the "Panther" (Black Panther in the Japanese version).
+
Abel is a playable character from the Archanea Series of Fire Emblem and a boss character in the spin-off, Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE. Alongside his boon companion Cain, Abel is a cavalier of Altea who is also known under the alias of the "Panther".

  +
War of Shadows
Abel is a friend of Cain and a loyal knight of Altea, nicknamed Black Panther. He helped Marth in his entourage. However, unlike Cain, Abel retired after the quest and opened a shop. He also married one of the Medonian Pegasus Sisters, Est. It is revealed in a base conversation with Est in Fire Emblem: Shin Monshō no Nazo ~Hikari to Kage no Eiyū~ that her pegasus doesn't like him, even though he tried to befriend it, as he was sure that he would need to be on good terms with it in order to wed Est. Her pegasus would go out of its way to savage Abel.

  +
Chronologically, Abel makes his first appearance in Prologue II of Shadow Dragon, where, under the orders of Elice, he and Frey assists Marth in escaping through the gates of Altea Castle. Thereafter joining up with Jagen and later Cain, Gordin and Norne, the small squadron manages to succeed in assisting Marth in fleeing Altea and taking up refuge in Talys. Should Abel be selected to act as the decoy of Marth in Prologue IV, he will thus not be available to assist his liege in bringing the War of Shadows to an end. Canonically, Abel is not selected to be the sacrifice, and after the War of Darkness concludes, he retires from knighthood, marries Est of the Macedonian Pegasus Sisters, and sets up a shop with her.

  +
War of Heroes
The attack from the Empire forced Abel to return to the military. However, Est was taken hostage and Abel was forced to fight against Altea. When confronted by Marth, Abel regretfully chose to side with Marth again, knowing the consequence that Est will be executed, although she can be saved if the player brings a healer with high level in staves (such as Yumina) and either the Rescue or Warp Staves. At the end of the battle, Abel vanished, probably chasing after Est, who left him in her ending.

  +
During the events of Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem and its remake, Abel returns in Chapter 15, where it is revealed that the Archanean Empire has taken Est hostage, forcing him to take up arms against Marth's army against his will. Should Marth or Est be directed to speak to him, he will defect to Marth's army and thereafter aid his liege in bringing the War of Heroes to an end. After the war concludes, Abel leaves to search for Est, who makes the decision to leave him in her ending.

  +
Tokyo Mirage Session #FE
In Game
  +
Abel appears as a corrupted Dark Knight Mirage during Touma Akagi's third side story in Illusory 106. He kidnapped Riku Suzumoto in order to lure Cain and defeat him, hoping to prove that he is Cain's better by doing so. After being defeated and freed by Itsuki Aoi and Touma, Abel apologizes for his behavior and becomes Riku's Mirage as a way of redemption.
  +
  +
Personality
  +
Like a majority of the cast appearing in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, Abel's character is not very well developed. Nevertheless, it is possible to deduce several points about his personality based on the few interactions that he has. Similar to many other knight characters in the aforementioned games, Abel is devoutly loyal to the liege that he serves, willing to sacrifice himself in the line of duty. This does not, however, deter him from attaining emotional fulfilment, as he opts to wed Est after the War of Darkness instead of continuing to serve Marth as a knight.
  +
  +
Abel's love for Est is evidently very strong, to the point where he is willing to betray his country in order to preserve her life, a fact that is proven through his actions in Mystery of the Emblem and its remake. This is further expounded on through his base conversations with Est in New Mystery of the Emblem, where he constantly expresses concern over her well-being, desiring nothing more than to be able to share in any burdens that she shoulders. Adding on to this is the fact that Abel has tried to befriend Est's pegasus steed under the belief that it is a necessary prerequisite to marry her, although all of his attempts have ended in failure.

Overall
  +
Subjective
  +
In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Book 1 of Mystery of the Emblem, Abel is one of the best units available. His stats, though not absurdly high in any category, are good enough at base level for him to perform most combat duties, and his class of Cavalier is excellent, providing him with sword and lance access and high mobility. Abel is around for the entire game and has rather good growths, meaning he tends to blossom effectively throughout the course of a playthrough. With a Weapon Level of 6, Abel is one point away on a 70% growth from being able to use the Silver Lance, which makes him a very strong attacker. Once promoted, he will be more or less set for the rest of the game. Book 1 gives him some downgrades due to the presence of dismounting (which cancels out his promotion bonus), but his overall statline is good enough even then to carry him in indoor chapters. Abel can largely be used interchangeably with Cain, though his higher Weapon Level gives him a slight edge over his fellow cavalier.
  +
  +
Book 2 Abel is a considerably different unit, joining somewhat late in the game as a prepromoted Paladin. This tends to put him on a poor footing next to units that have been around for the entire game, especially due to the Astral Shards and Starsphere allowing earlier characters to max themselves out easily. However, his statline is good enough to function effectively at that point, and he can make use of the Starsphere himself.
  +
  +
Overall, while not an excellent unit, Abel functions decently as a filler character, particularly in outdoor chapters.

Overall
  +
Subjective
  +
In the changeover to the DS, Abel suffers somewhat due to the increased overall difficulty of Shadow Dragon, with his once-great statline now being more mediocre. That said, Abel is still one of the most reliable units, due to him boasting a number of helpful traits. He maintains his excellent availability and his cavalier access in the early game, and though he is not one of your fastest units, his base Speed is high enough that he can double on lower difficulties and avoid doubling on higher ones. While not tanky, he can survive hits with relative safety due to his good Defense and HP, though his Luck is low enough that he may face small crit chances.
  +
  +
Abel's main advantage, though, is combining that high availability and workable base stats with his lance rank of D. This means Abel can use javelins at base level, allowing him to chip enemies down at range if they are too powerful for him to face, and more importantly, it allows him to use the Ridersbane lance after a few chapters. A forged Ridersbane will allow Abel to kill enemy cavaliers with ease, making him a highly effective attacker. Due to his class set, Abel can also reclass into a Dracoknight, giving him flight capability after promotion while maintaining most of his good qualities.
  +
  +
In general, Abel is a well-rounded unit who tends to stay useful for the entire game. Other characters surpass him, but he is rarely ever bad to deploy.

Subjective
Whether or not you want to use Abel over Cain, or vice versa, depends on both personal preference and the actual game either of them are a part of. Both can be good units when leveled up, however, and differences vary between the games they each took part in, and Some things hold pretty true across all games in which they participate:, Abel has a better strength growth in every incarnation of the character, while Cain always holds a superior luck growth.

  +
Abel's New Mystery of the Emblem incarnation takes the flaws of his Book 2 incarnation and ratchets them up considerably. His join time is worryingly late, and though he does boast a good lance rank, that is largely it for his positives, with his stats being extremely mediocre. By this point, the player is likely to have many characters who surpass Abel in every category, and his performance against enemies in his join chapter ranges from unimpressive to suicidal, depending on difficulty. Abel's growths are sufficient that something can be done with him, but he offers very little. Even his high lance rank is barely notable at that point.

  +
In general, Abel tends to be filler at best and a joke at worst.
Differences, however, now vary wildly between different games. In Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi, Abel has more balanced growths as compared to Cain, and sports a higher strength growth, while also having slightly lower growths in skill, speed, luck, and HP. Abel's bases are all either the same, or higher than Cain's with the exception of luck. He is preferred in this game by many for his rounded stats and superior strength growth, which proved to many to be more useful than the slight speed and skill growth lead Cain possesses.

  +
Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE
In Book One of Mystery of the Emblem, their growths are almost exact carbon copies of their first game, with the minor addition of a Mag/Res growth, and a significant decrease in Cain's health growth (from 90% to 60%), one of the 3 superior growths for Cain in the first game. A bigger difference in this game is between the two's bases: They both start out with bases opposite their respective growths, which has set a trend for the Cain and Abel pair archetype. One red horseman and one green, having bases that reflect the opposite of their actual growths. Cain actually starts out with a higher strength stat in book one (7 to Abel's 6) while having a lower skill and speed stat, while Abel starts out with less strength and more skill and speed. They end up very similar in this portion of the game in large part because their growths balanced out their bases, and despite eventually going in decently different directions stat wise, end up filing similar roles.

  +
Cain's rival from the Fire Emblem world, becomes Riku's Mirage as thanks for saving him

  +
Boss Stats
In Book Two, however, differences are far more noticeable, aside from their growth rates, which remain almost exactly the same (Aside from Cain getting less weapon level XP compared to before). Cain is recruited much earlier in the game (Chapter 8) while Abel comes in a moderate time later (Chapter 15). For one, their level differences are a huge factor: Abel starts out as a level one Paladin, and along with the trend more strongly set in book one, has higher starting speed and skill than his strength. Cain, on the other hand, is merely a level 9 cavalier, with lower bases in everything (due to the fact that, of course, he is unpromoted) and therefore, Abel has "better" bases and more balanced stats. Cain also regains his higher HP growth advantage, shooting back up to 90%. Leveling them up, of course, Abel proves to have higher strength once again, and is preferred by many in the end as compared to Cain, even though both prove to be very useful and are usually on most people's rosters. Cain actually ends up with superior HP on average as compared to Abel (assuming Cain is a level one Paladin when you get Abel) while Abel boasts better base defenses.

Fire Emblem Heroes
In one of the recent DS remakes, Shadow Dragon, their bases are very similar to Book one of Mystery of the Emblem: Both starting out pretty alike, Cain's is still slightly stronger while less swift and skilled, while Abel's bases are the opposite, with better skill and speed and worse strength. The similarities end there, however, as the growths are decently different from both of the previous games. In Shadow Dragon, Cain and Abel actually have identical speed and skill growths. Abel has a significantly lesser luck growth (the luck gap between the two wasn't this extreme in previous incarnations), less health growth (65% compared to Cain's 75%) and a slightly better strength growth (40% compared to Cain's 35%). Abel is preferred more often and often placed higher (if only slightly) on Shadow Dragon tier lists due to the slightly higher strength growth, which is on par with hard hitters like Barst.

Base Stats
Another reason is that there is often no real situations that can be handled by Cain better than Abel, while Abel does prove to be superior in a few situations that Cain can't handle quite as well, due to (assuming they are equal level and the same class) the fact that Abel will quickly surpass Cain's strength while usually staying slightly ahead on skill and speed. The loss to luck isn't felt too badly on Abel, and the health growth difference between the two usually isn't something that also makes or breaks a fight as they both have pretty high growths regardless. Many players therefore choose Abel over Cain if given the choice, even though both are very useful and preferred in a game that is generally considered to have a poor roster of characters.

In the next DS remake, however, the two are once more made distinct, their growths more unique in Fire Emblem: Shin Monshō no Nazo Hikari to Kage no Eiyū than the game before. Again, Abel is superior on strength while Cain wins out on Luck. However, for the first time, their defense growths aren't the same (as they were identical in every other game they appeared in together) with Abel winning out (40% compared to 35% on Cain). Abel upholds his reputation of being more balanced by having slightly lower Skill and speed once more (both 60%) while Cain has an exceptional growths in those areas (70%). Also, oddly, Abel actually has a higher HP growth than Cain's HP growth, another odd example of the switching health superiority between these two characters through the series. In this game, being a remake of Book Two, Abel again joins quite a bit later while Cain shows up pretty early. In the end, Cain proves to be a tougher and stronger overall character reliably, while Abel proves to be merely decent this time around. Abel's growths, while arguably better, are nonetheless hindered by his later arrival and far worse bases, and on average, Cain at the same level as Abel appears (Level 1 paladin) has superior stats in every area.

Counters
Abel, along with Cain, also began the trend of a duo of early-joining Social Knights/Cavaliers. They are often portrayed as close friends who are very loyal to the Lord character and subordinates of the Jagen character. Invariably, one of them will specialize in Strength, HP, and Luck (usually the Green Cavalier), and the other in Skill and Speed (usually the Red Cavalier). The two often have distinct personalities as well- the Green Cavalier being easy-going and passionate, and the Red Cavalier being serious and stern. This trend is notably subverted once: in Genealogy of the Holy War Alec is statistically and personally of the Cain Archetype, but is the Green Cavalier, while Noish is the Red Cavalier but of the Abel archetype.

Abel has a more significant story in the manga than in the anime. Retaining his role as Cain's close friend, he is known to tease him at times, as exemplified from the scene in which Cain became drunk after the victory at the Aurelis Secondary Castle.
  +
  +
Some time later, Abel sets off to prepare for the battle at Lefcandith when he spots a suspicious-looking girl tending to her pegasus in a forest. She reveals her name as Est, but promptly leaves before Abel could tell her his name. He realizes too late that she was a spy for Minerva, but meets her later under friendly terms after Minerva and her Whitewings join Altea. The two fall in love over the course of the war, and after it concludes, retire to live together as a married couple in Altea.
  +
  +
When the Archanean League arrive in Khadein for the first time, Abel is changed from a secondary character to a main character. When Marth finds himself pulled into a battle with a Fire Dragon, Abel goes off to rescue him, urging Cain to protect Marth with his life if he falls. After a long battle, Marth and Abel are defeated, but with Lena's Warp, only one of them is rescued.
  +
  +
Soon after Marth is teleported to safety, Falchion appears in front of Abel. Hearing Naga's voice, Abel's energy is restored, whereupon he wields Falchion to slay the Fire Dragon. However, Gharnef had placed a spell on the Fire Dragon beforehand, one that would cause it to self-destruct when killed. This causes the building that Abel and the dragon fought in to explode, leading to the Archanean League believing that Abel had perished in the battle.
  +
  +
Later, when the Archanean League arrives in Macedonia, a person who looks suspiciously like Abel is discovered to be working with the enemy. When Cain catches wind of these rumors, he goes off by himself to seek the truth. When he finds Abel, Cain immediately demands to know why he is working with the enemy, only to be knocked out.
  +
  +
The next time Abel appears, he is observed to be working alongside Michalis, as a means of repaying the debt of having been rescued by him. When Abel announces that he will be defecting to Marth, Michalis threatens to kill him unless he leaves Falchion behind. In response, Abel stabs Falchion in a nearby wall and proclaims that he will do anything to be by Marth's side, even if it means giving up the precious blade.
  +
  +
Soon after Abel leaves Macedonia, he runs into the archsage Gotoh, who praises him for his honorable deed, but chastises him for his foolishness in leaving Falchion behind. Abel's response to this is that Marth does not need Falchion, and if he ever does need it, he will play its role.
  +

The last time Abel appears is when he rescues Cain from battle and joins the Archanean League once again.

The name "Abel" could either mean "A breath" in Hebrew or be a reference to the character of the same name in the Christian Bible. In the latter interpretation, Abel is the son of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. A shepherd whose offering to God is favored over that of his brother Cain's, Abel is murdered out of jealousy by Cain. In Mystery of the Emblem, this is slightly reversed: Abel falls out of Altea's favor for treason, although this does not involve Cain.

“Yes, sire. Princess Elice bade us protect you.”
—Abel to Marth in Shadow Dragon.

Abel is a playable character from the Archanea Series of Fire Emblem and a boss character in the spin-off, Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE. Alongside his boon companion Cain, Abel is a cavalier of Altea who is also known under the alias of the "Panther".

Profile

War of Shadows

War of Heroes

During the events of Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem and its remake, Abel returns in Chapter 15, where it is revealed that the Archanean Empire has taken Est hostage, forcing him to take up arms against Marth's army against his will. Should Marth or Est be directed to speak to him, he will defect to Marth's army and thereafter aid his liege in bringing the War of Heroes to an end. After the war concludes, Abel leaves to search for Est, who makes the decision to leave him in her ending.

Tokyo Mirage Session #FE

Abel appears as a corrupted Dark Knight Mirage during Touma Akagi's third side story in Illusory 106. He kidnapped Riku Suzumoto in order to lure Cain and defeat him, hoping to prove that he is Cain's better by doing so. After being defeated and freed by Itsuki Aoi and Touma, Abel apologizes for his behavior and becomes Riku's Mirage as a way of redemption.

Personality

Like a majority of the cast appearing in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, Abel's character is not very well developed. Nevertheless, it is possible to deduce several points about his personality based on the few interactions that he has. Similar to many other knight characters in the aforementioned games, Abel is devoutly loyal to the liege that he serves, willing to sacrifice himself in the line of duty. This does not, however, deter him from attaining emotional fulfilment, as he opts to wed Est after the War of Darkness instead of continuing to serve Marth as a knight.

Overall, while not an excellent unit, Abel functions decently as a filler character, particularly in outdoor chapters.

In general, Abel is a well-rounded unit who tends to stay useful for the entire game. Other characters surpass him, but he is rarely ever bad to deploy.

In general, Abel tends to be filler at best and a joke at worst.

Non-Canon Appearances

Anime

Abel plays a less significant role in the anime compared to Cain, where he is portrayed as calm, composed and formal. He saves a child from falling to death after his captor, a pirate, throws him up into the air after being attacked by Cain, and Abel remarks, "I can't believe I'm still picking up your messes after all these years." Like Cain and Jagen, he is present when Marth makes the decision to travel to Devil Mountain and rescue Lena.

Manga

Abel has a more significant story in the manga than in the anime. Retaining his role as Cain's close friend, he is known to tease him at times, as exemplified from the scene in which Cain became drunk after the victory at the Aurelis Secondary Castle.

Soon after Abel leaves Macedonia, he runs into the archsage Gotoh, who praises him for his honorable deed, but chastises him for his foolishness in leaving Falchion behind. Abel's response to this is that Marth does not need Falchion, and if he ever does need it, he will play its role.

The last time Abel appears is when he rescues Cain from battle and joins the Archanean League once again.

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE

Abel, Cain's rival and close friend, appears as an antagonistic Mirage in the third and final of Touma Akagi's side stories as a member of the Dark Knight class. He kidnaps Riku Suzumoto and drains his Performa, luring Cain to him. Having been cursed, he holds fierce jealousy toward Cain.

After Abel is defeated by the party and purified of his curse, he comes to his senses and apologizes for his actions. He is extended an offer to aid Cain and the others in their fight, but instead chooses to protect Riku and becomes Riku's Mirage.

Etymology

The name "Abel" could either mean "A breath" in Hebrew or be a reference to the character of the same name in the Christian Bible. In the latter interpretation, Abel is the son of Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis. A shepherd whose offering to God is favored over that of his brother Cain's, Abel is murdered out of jealousy by Cain. In Mystery of the Emblem, this is slightly reversed: Abel falls out of Altea's favor for treason, although this does not involve Cain.

Trivia

  • Abel is mentioned along with Cain in the C support conversation shared between Stahl and Sully in Fire Emblem Awakening, where his title as the "Panther" is assumed by Stahl, a character that is modeled after his archetype.
  • Abel shares his Japanese VA, Takuya Sato, with Echoes' Conrad, as well as Darios from Fire Emblem Warriors.
  • Abel is indirectly mentioned in Catria and Est's base conversations in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, where it is revealed that Est had wanted to open up a shop with him before she was captured by Grieth.
    • Abel is also mentioned in Palla's death quote from the same game.
    • Also from the same game, one of Est's victory quotes is "Wait for me, Abel!"
