“I can't...die...without...”
—Cain in Thracia 776

Cain (ケイン Kein, Kain in the Japanese version) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776; he is a twenty-year old knight of Leonster. He enjoys a deep friendship with Alva. He is a war orphan, whose parents were killed in battle. As with Alva and Robert, he has no speaking lines in the game, but he is described as a serious and reticent character according to his description on the official website of Thracia 776 [1], in contrast to Alva, who is said to be bright and cheerful. This is supported by his ending, where it states that he is given the title of "The Quiet Revolutionary" after the war ended.

Overview

Cain is a textbook example of powerful overall growths not necessarily resulting in a good character. Cain has a unusually high growth rates in Luck, Strength, and Defense (which, although seemingly low, is actually tied for second best in the game, below Marty) and slightly higher build than Alva. His growth in speed is slightly below average, but he will on average cap it before level 20 all the same. At first glance, Cain would seem like an excellent mainstay.

Cain suffers from a large amount of disadvantages. He has a complete lack of any skills or personal weapons, a pc of 1, no Movement Stars, few supports, being unable to support with his partner, Alva, or with important mainstays such as Leif. Cain's base stats, weapon ranks, and level are significantly low for his joining period, being just about equal to Carrion two chapters earlier. As Carrion is capable of wielding the Elite Sword, which is obtained in the chapter in which Cain joins, Cain faces significant competition from other cavalry units right from the start.

Cain is further hit by Dismounting like the other Lance Knights. In addition to taking stat losses, Cain cannot use Lances at all indoors, and will have to use Swords, which he already has a weapon rank of E in. Unlike Carrion, or Fred, Cain is unable to use Swords while mounted, giving him little room to improve his Sword rank especially given that weapon exp is gained slowly in Thracia 776.

All these factors make other mounted units such as Carrion, Fred, Finn, and Fergus preferable to Cain in most circumstances. Out of the characters in Chapter 9, Robert, and Selphina are viewed as preferable over Cain and Alva.

However, if using Cain is desired, play him to his strengths, and giving him a good manual as soon as possible like the Ambush Manual, which can help compensate for his lack of skills. It is not recommended to use Cain indoors, and he can be a good filler in Outdoor maps when your main mounted units are hit by Fatigue. Cain's already high growths can be supplemented primarily using the Sety scroll to compensate for his poor speed and magic, and the Hezul scroll to compensate for the loss of HP growth associated with the Sety Scroll, giving him a total of +20 HP, +10 Strength, +10 Magic, +30 Speed, and -10 Luck. If Cain's Speed stat is doing well, he can benefit from the Dain scroll's boost to movement and defense; however, this scroll will likely be in high demand among a wide assortment of high-potential units to begin with.

Ending

Cain - Lance Knight of Leonster (レンスターの槍騎士 Rensutā no yari kishi)

Cain put down his sword and became a civil servant. He implemented many revolutionary political movements to strengthen the army and regain Leonster's lost land. It is said that Leif and his advisers put much trust in Cain as "The Quiet Revolutionary."

Trivia

  • Although Alva and Cain technically fulfill the Cain and Abel archetype, neither of them is mentioned in the official list of characters in the Cain and Abel archetype in the Archanea Chronicle, indicating Intelligent System does not officially count them as part of the Archetype.
