“Saias...I know you're aware of the markings of Fjalar that have appeared on your body. Neither Lord Julius nor Lady Julia had them...and that's what Manfroy is afraid of. Saias, you must live. You are a holy warrior of Fjalar...you must pass on the blood of Velthomer. And for now, you must hide that fact and nurture your power...”
—Cowen talking to Saias
Cowen is a boss character encountered in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776. Hailing from Velthomer in Grannvale, he is also Aida's father and Saias' grandfather. After Aida died protecting Saias from Manfroy, Cowen hid Saias in an isolated church in order to protect him. He is very wary of the Loptyrian Cult's growing influence and is aware of Julius' possession by Loptyr. Despite this, he is an ardent supporter of the empire, perhaps wishing to see the empire return to the way it was when Arvis had more control.
Cowen's stats seem to reflect his old age, as his Strength, Defense, Build, and to a lesser extent his Speed are all notably subpar compared to the many monstrously powerful Barons the player has already faced, such as Paulus, Gustav, Wolf, and Barat. Indeed, Cowen is not a particularly threatening boss should the player manage to close in on him. Unfortunately, he also possesses 4 leadership stars and a dangerous Berserk, which can force the player to sustain multiple casualties should he or she come into the chapter without a Restore staff or the means to kill or otherwise cripple Cowen on the first turn.
Cowen's Berserk Staff is also his greatest weakness, however. If the player can push Tina's magic stat up to 13, she will be able to use the Thief Staff to steal it from him before he can even put it to use. From there, the player can use the Barrier Staff to push a staff-user's magic over 20, allowing them to berserk Reinhardt. This will not only remove Reinhardt from the equation entirely, but will also remove his entire unit as well, as they will either kill him, forcing them to flee from the map, or be killed by him. On rare occasions, Reinhardt might even kill or capture Cowen.
