“You know better than anyone how I was born with a gift. All that natural talent, and yet you still want me to defer to everyone else. It's not my fault they work twice as hard and only end up half as good! I mean, I'm risking my life out here too, you know!”
—Delthea to Luthier in Shadows of Valentia

Delthea is a playable character from Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia.

Profile[]

Delthea is the descendant of a powerful mage and holds great talent in magic, more so than her older brother Luthier.

A Duma Faithful necromancer Tatarrah kidnapped Delthea and brainwashed her into being his Witch servant (in Echoes, it's implied that it was Slayde who gave the information to the Duma Faithful on where she lived). Luthier asks Alm and the Deliverance to help him save his sister. They encounter Tatarrah and kill him, freeing Delthea from the necromancer's control. Confused and wondering where her brother is, she flees the battlefield into the floodgate where she reunites with Luthier and meets Alm and the Deliverance. She joins the army to end the war once and for all. After the war, Delthea voluntarily decides to seal her magic and lives a happy life as an ordinary woman. In Echoes she also marries a nobleman.

Personality[]

Despite being naturally gifted with magic, Delthea is not interested in training her abilities, using it in Alm's group because she likes helping him and sealing it after the war. She is bright and cheerful, though a bit selfish. Despite constantly making fun of Luthier, her supports make it clear that she does love him and would like to be friends deep down, being quick to defend him when Clair does the same.

Delthea is an extreme glass cannon, and an above average Magic unit if trained. She starts with excellent overall stats for a Level 3 unit (including a whopping 15 Resistance, the most of any Magic user aside from the Pre-Promoted Tatiana) and comes equipped with a Prayer Ring, which guarantees a critical hit if the holder is under half health.

On top of her good stats, she has an extremely aggressive spell list with lots of hard hitting 2 range spells. She starts with Aura, which is already one of the most powerful spells available to Mages in Gaiden, and if you level her a lot she will eventually learn Ragnarok, the most powerful spell in the game, and she is the only character aside from Celica able to learn it.

However, Delthea does have several downsides to her. She is one of the few Mages in the game that does not learn Thunder (Nomah being the other, though Tobin and Atlas lack it as well if you choose to make them Mages), and thus does not have a spell with 3 range. She also has subpar HP growth and terrible Defense growth, as well as average Speed growth. On top of this, almost all of her spells deduct lots of HP when used other than her base Fire spell, which can burn through her low health quickly. All of these factors combined means she needs to be extremely well protected in order to be effective. But despite these weaknesses, she is capable of dealing more damage than any other Magic unit in the game and is one of the best Magic units.

In Echoes, Delthea has received a rather substantial change statistically, focusing more on Attack, Speed, Luck and Resistance whilst losing out in HP, Skill and Defense. Arguably, she qualifies for the Est archetype, as her explosively high growths and potential are moderated by her (comparatively) poor start. Apart from receiving the moderately useful Rewarp skill at Level 10 Priestess/Saint, her spell list remains unchanged from Gaiden, which is an issue as she still lacks any 1-3 range spells. While Seraphim remains an effective combat spell, Aura and Ragnarok may become more a hindrance than a help to her due to their high HP costs and weights, and since she lacks Thunder and Sagittae as aforementioned, she will require the investment of a Mage Ring to bring her up to speed and reverse her low movement even after promotion. Speaking of her promotion, it may be difficult to bring her to that and therefore partially mitigate her awful bulk due to promotional gains, as she starts out at only Level 3 (although high bases relative to her level help with that somewhat). Finally, she has significant issues with her Enemy Phase performance due to her bulk problems, therefore ensuring that she be heavily protected from enemy fire and most of her action be mitigated to the Player Phase if she is to be kept alive (although her Defense issues can be slightly corrected with a shield).

Despite these glaring flaws, however, if trained properly, Delthea's offense is nigh-unmatched due to her combination of high bases and growths, although such investment may not be possible in, say, LTC or efficiency runs.

To conclude, Delthea is the casual player's best ally due to her raw power, and the efficiency runner and unit analyzer's worst enemy as a result of her bulk issues and poor spell list.

Delthea is very much a product of her time, having a solid 36 Atk and 34 Spd which made her slightly stronger than her fellow Blue Tome Infantry units Linde and Ishtar, but slightly slower, so she can't double a few units that the other two can. At the same time, she has slightly better magical bulk at 31 Res, thus doing slightly better in damage mitigation than her competitors. Nonetheless, for a Book I Blue Mage, Delthea is among the better ones available with her only crutch being her low Def stat sitting at a mere 17 . Over time, Delthea has quickly phased out of the meta due to newer, stronger units of the same class boasting much stronger weapons and effects. Thanks in part to her later received Resplendent Form, Delthea has maintained a somewhat modest blue mage who may not overwhelm most foes, but still lead to respectable results.
Dark Aura has a decent supportive effect, granting adjacent allies at the start of her turn a bonus Atk+6 buff if they wield a melee range weapon. The supportive effect of this weapon does give her a solid place even in modern teams, though its later refine gave her something in return by granting herself an Atk/Spd+5 in-combat boost, pushing herself into range of stats that many modern units have.
Her starting kit cements her offensive role for the most part including Death Blow to increase her player phase power and Drive Attack to stack on Dark Aura and further empower her allies. Her only oddball skill is Miracle which can patch up her low physical bulk by giving her an opt out and survive otherwise fatal damage. Delthea is an

Counters[]

Delthea's overall Physical bulk is one of the lowest in the entire Heroes cast. Even Sword units with color disadvantage can plow through her low physical bulk with little trouble. If she is facing a Distant Counter Green or Blue, Delthea has very little chance of surviving their counter attack if they survive her own blow. In general, Green units exploit the advantage and low bulk to utterly decimate her.

Skill Inheritance[]

Delthea can maintain her Dark Aura tome or take a standard Blárblade tome, both of which compliment her playstyle, though the former is more supportive while the latter is more offensive.

Draw Back or Reposition are excellent ally manipulation skills. Delthea can maintain her Skill A and C in either set and can take Desperation which is a standard skill for most offensive oriented mages. If playing with Dark Aura, Draconic Aura has a fast cooldown and uses her tremendous Atk stat to its fullest while Moonbow or Glimmer syncs well with Blárblade's buff increases.

Fallen Delthea does not deviate too far from her base form and is far easier version to obtain, being a Grand Hero Battle unit. The only difference is mainly a slight drop to her Spd to 33 and her Res to 28 in exchange for slightly higher physical bulk score, but not enough to entirely bring her out of the clear of threats from physical units. Without access to Traits, being an early Grand Hero Battle unit, her overall potential was not worth mentioning, but thanks in part to Trait Fruits, she can focus more on her offensive stats in a manner that can further keep her in line with her original self.
Fallen Delthea's personal tome is Death which gives her an innate Res+3 buff. Its main effect is similar to Fury in that she receives +4 to her four core stats in exchange for a 4 damage recoil after battle. However, while Fury is a permanent buff when equipped, the +4 buff only occurs during combat. As such, it is not a visible buff, thus it cannot be affected by the likes of Panic Ploy. The tome effect can also stack on other in-combat stat buffs, thus Fallen Delthea can accumulate stats to dominate her foes.
Glacies takes her 80% of her Res an adds it to her damage. Unfortunately, he Res is not quite strong enough to make the skill worth it, but she can gain a decent boost with it. Death Blow gives her Atk+6 during combat which on top of her Death tome boost, means that she essentially has 60 Atk when initiating combat. Finally Even Attack Wave further increases her Atk by giving her Atk+6 to herself and her adjacent allies at the start of even numbered turns, thus giving her, on her own, potentially 66 Atk without factoring in other allies and their skills.

Counters[]

Much like her original form, Fallen Delthea's physical frailty makes her vulnerable to nearly all physical units, even some of the weaker red units. Green units in particular, especially those who have Distant Counter will finish her off easily while she may only inflict a mild amount of damage to them in return.

Skill Inheritance[]

Enhancing Fallen Delthea's Death tome does take a few skills that better sync with it, though luckily most of the skills are relatively easy to acquire. Moonbow is a far better special just to ignore the foe's Res altogether than trying to brute force using her mediocre Res fueled Glacies. Sturdy Impact can shore up her physical bulk thanks to its +10 Def on top of the Atk+6 buff while preventing her foe's follow-up attack unless they have Null Follow-Up. Mystic Boost allows her to combat dragons more effectively a neutralize staff user's damage normalizer effect. Its after combat heal will also deal with Death's recoil. On a budget, Chill Resistance will soften her foes for her attacks while Desperation can take full advantage of the recoil to put her into its range. Like her original form, she is a worthy Blárblade tome user, though her overall potential is slightly less than her original counterpart. As such, going for the standard loadout of Draw Back for an assist and Glimmer for a special gives her both utility and raw damage. Fury or Swift Sparrow give her the stats to bring her to a manageable level, especially the former to give her recoil damage in order to enter Desperation range.
