“The blood of dragons flows in your veins, as it does in all royals. You must learn to harness this draconic power wherever you may find it.”
—Xander, to Corrin.

Dragon Vein is a special ability introduced in Fire Emblem Fates that allows the user to manipulate the terrain of the battlefield.

Profile[]

The power to use Dragon Veins is said to have been inherited from dragon ancestors. Those who possess this ability can alter the outcome of the battle, as effects vary from creating new paths, drying up rivers to create more terrain, creating regeneration spots, freezing enemies, or consuming their weapons.

Areas that can be manipulated by Dragon Vein are highlighted by glowing orbs of various colors on the battlefield. This power originates from the First Dragons, such as Anankos, who has the power to terraform an entire world through a similar method. He most notably does this to the future world the children of Awakening come from, by restoring life to it along with creating graves for all those that died including their parents.

In small doses this power can stay in a person for a few years, which is the case for the Awakening children. In large doses it can last for decades. The power is passed on and likely permanent in any children they conceive regardless of dose, as the children still retain the power years after its used on their parents. Even though Odin, Laslow and Selena were given this power by Anankos, they are unable to use it in the main storyline. This of course, is most likely because they have stayed in Nohr long enough for the powers to dissipate.

Gameplay[]

Fire Emblem Fates[]

Dragon Veins are marked on a map by a special glowing tile surging with energy. These are single use and requires a character capable of activating them to stand on top of said tile and use a special Dragon Vein command. Majority of Dragon Veins revolve around destroying or creating terrain ranging from cooling lava to forming large natural stone bridges. Other dragon veins include producing strong gusts of wind, inflicting magical blights, and healing allies.

Dragon Veins are only usable in most main story and Paralogue chapters. Skirmishes do not have any of the Dragon Veins active and the maps that have terrain change related Dragon Veins are in their fully activated states. If a Dragon Vein gave effects to units, these are not applied at any point during a Skirmish. Most Dragon Veins are single use aside from a very select few.

Dragon Vein Users[]

The following are units in Fates who can utilize Dragon Veins by default. They are marked with a crown icon to the left of their names on their stat profiles.

Playable Characters[]

Any child who is mothered by Corrin, Azura, Camilla, Hinoka, Elise, and Sakura not listed above will inherit the ability to use Dragon Veins as well. For all other characters aside from the ones listed above and the aforementioned potential children, the First Blood item is required to give that character the permanent ability to activate Dragon Vein in a particular playthrough. In addition, any child of a character who used a First Blood item will also inherit the Dragon Vein ability as well.

Non-Playable Characters[]

Fire Emblem Engage[]

The use of Dragon Veins is available to any unit synced with Emblem Corrin or the DLC Emblem Camilla. Dragon Veins in Engage are not linked to specific map tiles, and the command can be used so long as the unit equipped with a capable Emblem is able to act. The type and range of Dragon Veins available depend on the Battle Style of the user and whether Corrin or Camilla is the equipped Emblem. Dragon units such as Alear are able to use all Dragon Veins, while other unit types only have access to one.

Vein Effects[]

Corrin Dragon Veins

  • Cavalry: Creates water that decreases Avo.
  • Covert: Creates fog that increases Avo. (Corrin)

Dragon Veins have an extra terrain effect on maps polluted with miasma. Miasma is cleared from tiles targeted by a Dragon Vein.

Fire Emblem Heroes[]

Heroes features a similar function called Divine Veins which cause changes to terrain in similar fashion to Dragon Veins. Divine Veins come from various skills, some of which can be accessed by multiple units via the Inherit Skill feature. Depending on skill effects, Divine Veins come in various grid alignments when activated and last until the user's next turn. Divine Veins do not stack and can cancel each other out.

Vein Effects[]

  • Stone: Grants Def/Res+6 during combat, reduces damage from foe's Specials by 10 during combat (excluding area-of-effect Specials), and reduces damage from area-of-effect Specials by 50% (excluding Røkkr area-of-effect Specials).
  • Flame: Acts as difficult terrain for foes with Range = 2 (moving over this space costs +1 movement; movement cost cannot exceed unit's allowed movement; "cannot be slowed by terrain" effects do not apply). At start of enemy phase, deals 7 damage to foe, and also, as combat begins, deals an additional 7 damage to foe (effects that reduce damage "during combat" do not apply; will not reduce foe's HP below 1).
  • Green: Foe cannot warp from this space or into this space (does not affect units with Pass skills or warp effects from structures like camps and fortresses in Rival domains). Inflicts Special cooldown charge -1 on foe per attack (only highest value applied: does not stack).
  • Haze: Inflicts Atk/Spd/Def/Res-5 on foe and neutralizes foe's bonuses (from skills like Fortify, Rally, etc.) during combat.

Other Appearances[]

Fire Emblem Warriors[]

In the action spin-off game Fire Emblem Warriors, some maps feature bases housing Dragon Veins that can be accessed if the base is taken by the player's forces. When used, they alter the landscape and make paths in hazardous or impassible terrain. Unlike in Fates, there is no restriction on which characters can or can't activate a Dragon Vein.
