Profile
Draug (ドーガ, called Dohga in the Japanese version) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Tsurugi, Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem, and their remakes. He is a big, armored knight in service of Altea. He joins Marth during the start of both of his quests. It is implied that he is good friends with the archer Gordin and his brother Raian, and he is shown to be friendly towards the recruit Norne.

  +
War of Shadows
  +
Chronologically, Draug makes his first appearance at the end of Prologue IV in Shadow Dragon, where he and Norne meet up with Marth and his retainers after they manage to reach the escape point near the borders of Altea. After briefly introducing Norne to Marth, he then leads the small battalion to a vessel that he had prepared prior to their arrival, granting them the opportunity to successfully evade the Gra forces and seek refuge in Talys.

  +
When Marth later sets out on his quest to end the War of Shadows starting from Chapter 1 several years later, Draug will aid him on his mission, assisting him in bringing it to an end. Following the conclusion of the war, Draug is positioned as the leader of a small guard stationed in an outland garrison, where he is renowned for being both kind and stalwart.
According to the Takayashiki Hideo's Mystery of the Emblem novel adaptation, Draug is 25 years old.

Draug next reappears as an instructor to the 7th Platoon in Prologue VI of New Mystery of the Emblem, should the necessary conditions be fulfilled. The 7th Platoon will succeed in besting him, and he thereafter offers to aid them until they are given full recognition as full-fledged knights at the end of Prologue VIII.

During the events of Book 2 of Mystery of the Emblem and its remake, Draug will aid Marth in the War of Heroes right from the first chapter. When the war is brought to a conclusion, Draug, under Marth's behest, assumes the command of Grust's garrison.

Draug appears as a "Knight" Mirage, and Mamori Minamoto's partner. Similar to Chrom, he comes from a different world and has lost his memories. He’s a heavy-armored soldier that prides himself in his absolute defense and ability to support his allies. He transforms into an axe in battle and lends his strength to Mamori.

Early before the main story of the game, Draug was once a Mirage partner of Barry Goodman but was separated from Barry after a defeat to another Mirage. He later reappears at Daitou TV Station, being corrupted, he takes control of Barry. After Barry is freed from Draug's control by Mamori's singing, and Draug is defeated in battle by Itsuki and the others, he is purified by Mamori's newly awakened Performa and becomes her partner.

Personality
|1

  +
Draug's personality is, like a majority of the cast appearing in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Mystery of the Emblem, not very well-developed, owing to the lack of dialogues involving him and the minor role he plays in the games. Nevertheless, it is still possible to form certain impressions of his character based on the few interactions that he engages in. In a similar vein to many other knight characters appearing in the games, Draug is strongly patriotic, willing to lay his life on the line for the sake of protecting both his country and liege, a fact that is proven by his having dutifully fought alongside Marth for the duration of the two wars.

More aspects to Draug's character are revealed through his base conversations with Kris in New Mystery of the Emblem, where it is revealed that he is quite humble; in spite of the valor that he has displayed on the battlefield, he chooses to be taciturn instead of vocal about his achievements. He is also portrayed as honor-bound, refusing to claim credit for achievements that he has not attained. This is clearly evidenced through his repeated persistence in disproving the rumors that paint him as a figure of exceptional strength and talent, in spite of Kris relentlessly describing him as such.

While they do not converse together in any of their appearances within the games, it is said Draug is good friends with the archer Gordin and his younger brother Ryan. This friendship is depicted more in official artwork and supplementary material like the anime. They also have support bonuses in their appearances in the DS remakes.

Draug has a support bonus with the new recruit Norne in the DS remakes; according to the Fire Emblem 20th Anniversary Encyclopedia, there is a romantic attraction between the two.

In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Draug is a very weak unit overall, but he does begin the game with some advantages. He is able to face groups of physical units in the game with very little chance of defeat due to his high base Defense. This allows him to effectively weaken several enemy units for other allies to finish off without them risking counterattacks. However, he will gradually become less useful as the game proceeds, becoming more of a burden than a boon.

To begin with, Draug's base stats are all average or below average, apart from his Defense. Unfortunately, with a mere 10% Defense growth, his ability to act as a tank or choke-point holder diminishes as the game proceeds. On top of that, he has very unimpressive growths in general; while his Speed and Skill growths are quite decent for an Armor, the main problem is that he starts with low bases in both stats. Coupled with the fact that Armors can never Promote in this game, he will thus wind up mediocre. On average, Draug will end up with about 8-12 points in most stats, which simply will not make him viable for use mid to late- game. He is also held back by his low Movement, which will require quite a number of turns to be wasted for his effectiveness to be harnessed. Further exacerbating the problem are his Weapon Level growth and inability to Promote, effectively meaning that he will be locked out of the better weapons in the game, unless he is given a Manual.
Book 2

  +

  +
Also, unlike in Mystery of the Emblem, enemy reinforcements are relatively easy to deal with in the original Fire Emblem, thus Draug here isn't even entirely valuable as the fabled choke-point holder he is made to be.
|Knight

  +
|6

  +
Taking all of these things into consideration, Draug winds up being one of the weakest units in the game. While he has some early-game usefulness, he will slowly fall behind the player's other characters and eventually be brick-walled by his inability to promote.

Level 1 General

  +
In Mystery of the Emblem, Draug can be a wildly mixed-bag due to various gameplay factors. Draug's one big previous flaw is the level and stat cap for lack of promotion. Here, Draug can promote.
*Strength: +2

  +
*Skill: +1

  +
One infamous aspect of Mystery of the Emblem is its insidious amounts of reinforcements that, if not kept in check, can overwhelm the player and result in harsh casualties. In Book 1 particular, Draug shines as he can be vital - granted he is trained well enough - in blocking off the enemy swarms at choke-points, especially if the player doesn't play stages like Ch.13 and Ch.16 fast and hard.
*Speed: +3

  +
*Defense: +4

  +
This is not entirely the case in Book 2, as level design often takes into account the possibility of Draug blocking enemy advance, and magic-using enemies are much more common. Player might ultimately favor Tiki as the choke-point holder against Book 2's worst late-game swarms. Dragons are particularly problematic, as they blow right through Draug's Defense.
*Resistance: +3

  +
  +
In Book 1, Draug can get upstaged by Dolph (who joins just before the worst reinforcement maps of Book 1) and Lorenz in certain aspects. In Book 2, Draug may often find nothing much to do until the late game, as lot of the final chapters take place indoors and Cavaliers/Paladins are forced to dismount, eliminating their use of Lances that Armor Knights can. That said, before those final levels take place, Sheena can be recruited to player's army and she can be a viable Lance user in the final chapters.
  +
  +
To make sure Draug actually can hold the defenses, he needs to an active part of player's army to gain the enough EXP to not fall behind.

Overall
  +
Subjective
  +
Draug sees most of his usability during the very early game. This is due to the fact that he is, at his join time, one of the few notably durable characters in the army, especially against the slightly undertuned enemies in Chapter 1. He has a somewhat shaky hit rate due to weapon triangle and average attacking power, but even on Merciless, he can usually endure four hits from enemy Pirates, whereas characters like Abel can only endure two. In Chapter 2, however, enemy stats start to climb upward, making his durability lesser and lesser, not helped by enemies being speedy enough to risk doubling him. Draug's ability to tank damage declines heavily as the game goes on, due to enemy strength increasing far faster than he can gain defense or speed, and the utility of a slow, tanky unit becomes dubious when Shadow Dragon as a whole is very seize-focused and prioritizes rapid movement.
  +
  +
Draug's main distinguishing feature after the early game is his unusual personal statline: rather than defensively-focused, as one might expect of a Knight, Draug actually has very Speed-focused personal bases and growths with Defense and HP at a minimum, which result in him being somewhat all-around mediocre in his base class. Because of this, one route to go for a player attempting to make Draug a long-term unit is to reclass him into a class with a speed focus, such as Hunter, Dark Mage, or Pirate, resulting in a very high-speed unit. However, this will make him extremely frail, as he will have little if any Defense to speak of, and it will force him to retrain his weapon rank, as none of his reclass options use lances.

Overall
Overall
Subjective
Draug can be a rather useful knight if effort is put into him. While he has slightly less defense than other Knights he makes up for it by having more Strength and HP (including a high +10 bonus when you promote him to a General.) and being extremely balanced, despite being a knight, he even has high speed and skill growths (more than his defense as a knight), he actually has low defense, so it is a good idea to keep him as a knight to keep his pretty high defense growths. As such it is a good idea to put Draug on the front lines to go up against powerful foes because as long as there are not any Magic users, he can last long.

  +
Draug has seen some very substantial improvements since his Shadow Dragon days, with his Speed and Strength being significantly buffed. That said, by the time he has been obtained permanently, the utility of a Knight has declined heavily, with New Mystery prioritizing a more aggressive playstyle with little room for a character like him. On the other hand, the strategy of reclassing him has become considerably better, due to it being available earlier and, after completing the game once, giving him more classes to work with. With a personal base Speed of 5, Draug hits double-digit Speed in most classes, and his personal growth of 50% practically ensures he will gain Speed frequently. This makes him into an incredibly hard-hitting unit in the early game, though his frailty remains something of a problem due to him lacking any base Defense and having a growth that is more acceptable than great. Draug's potential makes him highly effective, particularly early on, though he tends to only reach it when reclassed.

  +
On an initial playthrough, Draug tends to perform best in Pirate; even when restricted to an Iron Axe, he still ends up as one of the hardest-hitting early units, and he maintains that prowess as a Berserker. With class sets merged, Cavalier becomes a potential option, due to it allowing him to keep his lance rank and also massively boosting his mobility. Post-promotion, he functions well in Dracoknight or Paladin, but the high base rank of Swordmaster makes it a viable path for him as well.
In the remakes, Draug has a very good base and growth in speed. Thus, it is viable to reclass him to a more offensive class such as Pirate, Hunter, and Mercenary. However, his durability will suffer because his HP and defense bases are comparatively low, and he will need to catch up in weapon rank.

  +
Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE
If the class sets are merged, Draug can make one of the best cavaliers especially with his high rank in lances.

In the anime, Draug is depicted as an intellectual individual who acts as a big brother figure to Gordin. He is seen helping Gordin with his archery training, and shielding the eager young Bowman from enemy attacks in several scenes. This friendship with Gordin is also implied in official Mystery of the Emblem artwork which shows Draug with his arm on Gordin's shoulder, a well as a mutual support in the DS Games.

“I received word from Sir Malledus to ready a vessel, that we might slip away discreetly by sea.”
—Draug to Marth in Shadow Dragon

Draug is a playable character from the Archanea Series of Fire Emblem. He is an armored knight in the service of Altea, participating in both campaigns that Marth engages in.

Profile

War of Shadows

Chronologically, Draug makes his first appearance at the end of Prologue IV in Shadow Dragon, where he and Norne meet up with Marth and his retainers after they manage to reach the escape point near the borders of Altea. After briefly introducing Norne to Marth, he then leads the small battalion to a vessel that he had prepared prior to their arrival, granting them the opportunity to successfully evade the Gra forces and seek refuge in Talys.

War of Heroes

Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE

Personality

Relationships

Also, unlike in Mystery of the Emblem, enemy reinforcements are relatively easy to deal with in the original Fire Emblem, thus Draug here isn't even entirely valuable as the fabled choke-point holder he is made to be.

Taking all of these things into consideration, Draug winds up being one of the weakest units in the game. While he has some early-game usefulness, he will slowly fall behind the player's other characters and eventually be brick-walled by his inability to promote.

In Mystery of the Emblem, Draug can be a wildly mixed-bag due to various gameplay factors. Draug's one big previous flaw is the level and stat cap for lack of promotion. Here, Draug can promote.

To make sure Draug actually can hold the defenses, he needs to an active part of player's army to gain the enough EXP to not fall behind.

Etymology

Draug is "Guard" spelled backwards. This is also true of his Japanese name, and the equivalent is true of his name in every other European translation, of the equivalent word in each language.

The English name, "Draug", also coincides with an alternative spelling of Draugr, an undead creature in Scandinavian folklore.

Trivia

 • Despite the relationship between Norne and Draug, he is unmentioned in the former's profile on the official website for Heroes.
 • Draug's kinsmanship with Lorenz in Tokyo Mirage Sessions is likely a reference to Draug succeeding Lorenz as Grust's caretaker after the War of Heroes.
