Byleth (ベレト or ベレス) is the central protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses and an Avatar character. Their name and gender is chosen by the player. They are the child of Jeralt and Sitri. Their time in Jeralt's Mercenaries gained them a fearsome reputation as the "Ashen Demon." They bear the mysterious Crest of Flames, can wield the legendary Sword of the Creator, and hosts a second being, Sothis, in their consciousness.

Their skills bring the attention of the Church of Seiros's Archbishop Rhea who asks them to become a professor of the Officers Academy. From one of the three houses, Byleth is thrust into the many complexities of Fódlan through the three future leaders of Fódlan's nations. While their days as a professor are peaceful, war has been brewing between the nations of Fódlan with them as a key figure in the course of Fódlan's future.
