The Nintendo 3DS (ニンテンドー3DS) is the last installment of Nintendo's line of purely handheld systems. It is the direct successor to the Nintendo DS line.

Profile[]

While similar in name and sharing many similar functions to its predecessor, the 3DS is intended to be an entirely different line of systems from the DS line. Its main feature is its stereoscopic 3D capability, which provides a three dimensional effect providing depth rather than having everything "come at the viewer". It is also unnecessary to use 3D glasses to experience the 3D effect. Also unique to the system is its gyroscope, which allows for certain games to have their cameras manipulated without pressing buttons. Like its predecessor the Nintendo DS, specifically the Nintendo DSi variation, the Nintendo 3DS features online capabilities through Nintendo's online services and eShop, allowing players to purchase games and content digitally as well as access online multiplayer and other exclusive content through features like StreetPass and SpotPass. This service ended on April 08, 2024 and all digital-exclusive content can no longer be acquired if not already owned and downloaded.

The 3DS also features a Virtual Console download service via its eShop online marketplace. Games from the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo Entertainment System are currently available. Sega Game Gear games are scheduled for sometime this year. GBA games are currently only available to "Ambassadors", people who purchased the 3DS prior to the price cut only a few months after the system's launch. Until recently, the NES games were also Ambassador-exclusives, but Nintendo is currently gradually allowing the games to be made available to the general public. All Ambassadors receive the games free of charge as compensation for the price cut, while everyone else will need to purchase the games. For the first month of the 3DS's existence, 3D Classics: ExciteBike, a three dimensional remake of the classic NES motocross title, was free of charge to all customers. A remake of the multiplayer-only The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, initially released on the GBA, was released as DSiWare with a single player mode added in celebration of the franchise's 25th anniversary for free on the Nintendo DSi and 3DS until February 2012.

In August of 2011, the 3DS Ambassador Program was instituted when the 3DS underwent a heavy price drop from the original launch price of US$249.99 to US$169.99. 3DS owners that purchased the handheld prior to the price drop were granted access to an exclusive collection of GBA and NES titles that otherwise did not see commercial release on the handheld's eShop. The GBA title Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones was included among the titles in this program.

The Nintendo 3DS Bundle for Fire Emblem Awakening released in Japan on April 2012 and has seen a release of the North American bundle with the aforementioned title preinstalled in the system instead of having the game in retail. The game is available to download in North America and Europe only.

The Nintendo 3DS is currently the final purely handheld hardware system made by Nintendo as the current console, the Nintendo Switch, is considered a home console with portability options. The 3DS is mainly considered a spiritual predecessor due to it sharing some of its traits such as touch screen functionality.
