The Nintendo DS (ニンテンドーDS) is a handheld console manufactured by Nintendo, released in 2004. The system is often simply referred to as "DS" for short by the playerbase, which officially means "Developer System", though the playerbase interprets it as "Dual Screen".

The Nintendo DS has four main types, though all four feature the same clam shell design which houses a LCD-screen on both sides of the shell, hence the systems reference as "Dual Screen". The bottom screen is touch-sensitive and the system includes a stylus to facilitate this function. The DS includes a built-in microphone allowing certain voice activated functions games. The DS is also the first Nintendo system to feature built-in wireless functions including system-to-system wireless play without need for a peripheral like the Game Boy Advance or LAN connections of the GameCube and also allows connectivity to the then active Nintendo Wi-Fi service. The original Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS lite also has backwards compatibility with Game Boy Advance games through a dedicated slot on the bottom screen with some games allowing direct comparability and functions when housing certain games of the Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance. The Nintendo DS does not support any Game Boy and Game Boy Color games however.
The Nintendo DS Lite, a re-design of its predecessor, has a slimmer, brighter and lighter design, which shares similarities with the Nintendo Wii and is more appealing towards broader commercial audiences. This system was released in 2006 and also plays GBA games.
In 2008, a third iteration of the DS, called the Nintendo DSi was released. It is thinner and brighter than the DS Lite and GBA backwards compatibility was removed.
In 2009, the fourth and final model, called the Nintendo DSi XL (called Nintendo DSi LL in Japan) was released. It is a larger version of the regular DSi and is the largest, heaviest, and brightest of the four models. Like the DSi, it does not play GBA games.
Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, a remake of the first game in the series, has been released on this system, currently being the first and the only Fire Emblem game to be produced for the system outside of Japan. A second Fire Emblem title for this system, a remake of Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem Book 2, has been released in Japan only.
The DS line was succeeded by the Nintendo 3DS line in early 2011.
