“Aye, miss. There, there. I, too, wish nothing more than for this needless war to end.”
—Roger in Shadow Dragon.

Roger is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. He was omitted in Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem but brought back in New Mystery of the Emblem.

Profile[]

Roger is a knight of Grust and can be recruited by Caeda, who asks him if he believes in love, causing him to develop a crush on her. His endgame title is "Still Single", as he shows romantic interest in Caeda but probably gave up on her, seeing that she is in love with Marth. However, in his conversations with Kris in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem, Roger is shown fantasizing with all the women of the army. This leads to an awkward conversation between him and Kris, since Roger has a very vague and superficial vision of romance (saying things like "anyone in this army would do", referring to having a romantic relationship with someone). If Kris is a woman, Roger thinks that she is in love with him before she lies that there is a girl interested in him.

After the War of Shadows, Roger joined the Archanean army.

Roger has relatively high growths and bases for a Knight, but is otherwise quite mediocre, and joins at a point where the army is likely in a fairly good state. He can choke points with some effectiveness, but his lack of mobility and bad Speed means he is not a good fighter. He also cannot promote, and is outclassed heavily by durable units that also boast mobility, like Minerva.

Roger has more traditional Knight growths than Draug, but is generally not very good at withstanding damage due to enemy strength being significantly greater. He lacks much of a Defense growth or base, meaning he does not boast much in the way of durability compared to anyone else in the Knight class. His only particularly high growth is Luck, which is not a stat that tends to give much to him, as he has a low base. He does have fairly high Speed, which means he can function fairly well in classes like Pirate or Hunter, but he cannot effectively transfer his lance rank to any class.

The expansion of reclassing, combined with significant buffs to his bases and growths, makes Roger a considerably more effective unit. On a second playthrough, he can become a Cavalier, allowing him to maintain his lance rank and become quite speedy. He can also function well enough in classes like Pirate, Myrmidon, or Hunter, though this will tank his weapon rank. That said, he takes a few levels to reach promotion, and he joins at a time where the army is now flooded with strong and well-trained units, which tends to make him rather inessential. He is functional, but he does not do much that others cannot.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light[]

Pre-Battle[]

“I don't want to fight. But I've got orders to stop you right here! I am sorry.”
—Roger's pre-battle quote in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light

Recruiting Roger[]

  • Caeda: Hello there. I am Caeda of Talys, and I come in peace.
  • Roger: Ack! You caught me off guard, calling out like that... What do you want?
  • Caeda: I have a question for you. Do you believe in love? Is there someone that matters to you?
  • Roger: Wh-What? What kind of question is that?
  • Caeda: I apologize. You look very kind, and I thought we might have a chat. Would you mind telling me your name?
  • Roger: Er, well... The name's Roger. Roger of Grust.
  • Caeda: Roger, I want you to thing about something... Those who cry because of war. We in the Archanean League wish to put an end to fighting, to this sadness. Surely you can understand this.
  • Roger: Of course I do. I don't fight because I enjoy it... But I can't betray my homeland.
  • Caeda: Is there someone precious to you in Grust?
  • Roger: My parents have passed on, and I am unmarried... But betraying my homeland is out of the question!
  • Caeda: So what I ask is impossible?
  • Roger: I am sorry to say so, but yes.
  • Caeda: And I am sorry to hear it. I do understand. Still, I was glad to speak. You are the man I expected.
  • Roger: Oh, you're leaving, then...
  • Caeda: I must. If I stay with you too long, your comrades might think you a turncoat.
  • Roger: You are too kind... Why can't I meet someone like you in Grust? Hey... Wait a moment. I... I don't want you to leave. I am on my own, so...I will join you.

Recruit Conversation[]

  • Caeda: Good day, sir.
  • Roger: Ack!
  • Caeda: Peace, I’ve no wish to fight you. My name is Caeda. I hail from Talys.
  • Roger: Wh-what are you talking to me for?! This is a battlefield!
  • Caeda: Might I trouble you by asking your name, good sir?
  • Roger: M-my name? That’s- It’s Roger... Why?
  • Caeda: Hee hee, forgive me, Roger, it’s just you looked sweet and kind. I just had to stop and talk to you. Tell me: do you believe in love? Oh, listen to me. I’m sure you already have a sweetheart back in Grust.
  • Roger: What?! No, no! I... mean, er, I’m quite unattached at the moment.
  • Caeda: Roger, think of the children- the poor women and children who shed tears every day this war drags on. I joined the Archanean League to put an end to it, but I just...just...*Sniff* Oh, Roger, doesn't it break your heart?
  • Roger: Aye, miss. There, there. I, too, wish nothing more than for this needless war to end.
  • Caeda: Then...would you consider fighting with us to end it?
  • Roger: What? Oh heavens, no... I’m sorry, but I could never betray my kingdom.
  • Caeda: Ah, yes, I see. You must have family back in Grust who are counting on you.
  • Roger: No, not especially. My parents are dead, and it’s not as if I’ve a girl to call my own. But Grust is my home- always has been. I won’t betray her.
  • Caeda: And I cannot convince you to change your mind?
  • Roger: I’m afraid not, miss.
  • Caeda: All right, sorry to bother you. But I’m glad we had this chance to talk, Roger. You’re every bit the man I thought you were. Goodbye, then...
  • Roger: Wait- you’re leaving?!
  • Caeda: Well, yes, Roger, I must! Every moment I stay here, I put you at risk. What if your comrades thought you were conspiring with the enemy? No, I must go...
  • Roger: …You’re very kind, Caeda. Dare I say, we don’t have girls quite like you back in Grust. Um, perhaps...I suppose I could...Aw, heck, I’m going with you!

Conversation with Marth[]

  • Roger: Prince Marth? I’m Roger, a Grustian soldier. Well, at least I was. I’m through fighting against you. Let me join your League.
  • Marth: Well, certainly. We need all the strong allies we can get. But why the sudden change of heart?
  • Roger: Well, er... There’s this fetching girl named Caeda who asked me to, and, uh... What can I say? I think I’m in love. Try saying no to a girl who comes racing up to you in the heat of battle just to ask if you believe in love! Whew! I must’ve turned red as a strawberry! Heh heh…
  • Marth: ......

Support conversation with Kris[]

First conversation[]
  • Kris: Sir Roger.
  • Roger: Ohh... Caeda... She's so dreamy...
  • Kris: Sir Roger?
  • Roger: The other ladies in this army are all so beautiful, too... Ooh, I want to date somebody so bad...
  • Kris: Sir Roger!
  • Roger: Wah!? …Oh, it's you, Kris. Don't shout so suddenly. You gave me one heck of a fright.
  • Kris: I called you many times, you know... So you desire to date someone, Sir Roger?
  • Roger: Huh? W-were you listening? Oh boy. Well, what's done is done. Since you know everything already, can I ask you something? Could you, um, give me some advice so I can score myself a date?
  • Kris: …To be honest, I've no confidence. But, I won't know until I've tried, so I'll give it my best shot. What kind of girl do you like, Sir Roger?
  • Roger: Eh? Now that you ask me, I don't think I have a preference... Well, I'm not exactly pretty myself, so I don't really have high standards. I guess anyone in this army would do.
  • Kris: Anyone...?
  • Roger: Eh? Did I say anything wrong?
  • (If Kris is male)
  • Kris: Well, I'm not exactly privy to a girl's heart, but... "anyone" sounds like an insult. I don't think any girl would like to hear that.
  • (If Kris is female)
  • Kris: Sir Roger... "Anyone" just doesn't cut it. No girl wants to hear that.
  • Roger: I-is that so? I had no idea... Well, it makes sense, I suppose. Alright, I'll make an effort and think harder about my tastes; I'm counting on you, Kris!
Second conversation[]
  • Roger: Kris, listen to me!.
  • Kris: Sir Roger? What is it?
  • Roger: After our last talk, I thought real hard about the ideal type of woman for me. Well, she should have a beautiful face and an adorable smile.
  • (If Kris is male)
  • Kris: Okay.
  • (If Kris is female)
  • Kris: Got it.
  • Roger: A large chest would be swell, too. But I'd prefer thin hips... She should be wealthy, gentle, reliable, sweet... ...a good cook, talker, listener, have a nice voice and be able to hold her liquor...
  • Kris:
  • Roger: She must be somebody who's always loved me, secretly thinking of me till this day, longing for me every night... …Somebody who's been a little sister to me ever since we were young, but now wishes to be seen as a mature woman...
  • Kris: …I see. I think I got it, Sir Roger.
  • Roger: Oh, but there's more... Well, the rest is written on this sheet of paper. Anyway, I'd like to go out with a girl whom meets all of these conditions. Kris, what's the plan?
  • Kris: Well...
  • Roger: W-well?
  • Kris: I'd love to believe there's a woman like that, out there somewhere. B-but, I must resume my practice...
  • Roger: W-what? Are you telling me you're giving up? W-wait, Kris, wait a minute. You're the only one I can rely on. You're the only one I can rely on!
Third conversation[]
  • Roger: Hey Kris, could you give me some more advice?
  • Kris: Yeah, sure. If it's within my capability.
  • (If Kris is male)
  • Roger: I've been thinking; I wonder... if I set the bar too high? I've decided to change my plans and start by meeting someone. After all, wouldn't it be wonderful to gradually fall in love with someone after talking to her again and again?
  • Kris: A wise decision.
  • Roger: So, I was wondering if you could, um, introduce me to someone. Kris... don't you know any nice girls?
  • (If Kris is female)
  • Roger: But honestly, I had no idea somebody thought of me that way. No idea at all. I wonder if I should confess my love right now? Chris, what do you reckon's best?
  • Kris: Huh...? I don't know, that depends on the other person...
  • Roger: Why are you talking like it's got nothing to do with you...? Weren't you waiting for my confession? That's the reason you felt jealous when I talked about my ideal woman, right? Anyway, Kris! I love you!!!
  • Kris: Eh!? W-what, me? I'm sorry, but I...
  • Roger: There you go, looking all embarrassed... You put up a cold front, but you really like me, don't you?
  • Kris: No, you've got it wrong! I don't feel that way at all!
  • Roger: I-I-I see... If you deny it that strongly... then I guess I'm back to being a sad man again...
  • Kris: Oh... I-I'm sorry. I spoke too much.
  • Roger: If you want to apologize... How about you introduce me to another girl, then?
  • Kris: O-oh, right. I can't think of anyone at the moment... But, well... I've, er, heard whispers... of a girl who, um, secretly admires you, but who's too shy to confess her feelings... These are just whispers though, but I don't think anybody can positively prove they're false.
  • Roger: I see, you're right, I can't deny that. So it's a shy girl. I had no idea.
  • Kris: What if you took the initiative, Sir Roger?
  • Roger: You're right, I should be proactive and seek her myself! Thanks, Kris! I'll give it a shot!
  • Kris: …I wonder, did I do the right thing?

Trivia[]

  • Roger is one of the more comedic characters in Shadow Dragon. Starting with his talk with Caeda and continuing with his talk to Marth, where he states to Marth how he thinks he's in love with Caeda, who went up to him in the middle of a battle to ask him if he "believes in love", leaving Marth speechless.
    • Roger continues his role as a humorous character in the second DS remake where, Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem.
