The Super Nintendo Entertainment System or SNES, is a 16-bit video game console developed and released by Nintendo. The console is also known as the Super Family Computer/Super Famicom (スーパーファミコン) in Japan and Southeast Asia, and as the Super Comboy in South Korea, where it was distributed by Hyundai Electronics. While the console bears different names and slight physical differences across territories, the only significant difference is the region-locking system put in place to prevent the play of games sold in regions other than the one the console was purchased in.

Overview[]

The Super Famicom was Nintendo's successor console to the Nintendo Entertainment System/Nintendo Famicom. First released in Japan in 1990 and in other territories between 1990 and 1993, it was supported by Nintendo for the entirety of the 1990s and into the early 2000s. Part of this support came in the form of accessories such as the Satellaview, a Japan-exclusive add-on accessory and service that allowed players to download special games for play via television satellite broadcast. Late in the console's life, Nintendo also offered games for sale via the Nintendo Power kiosk service. With this service, players could purchase writable Super Famicom ROM cartridges, and instead of buying a boxed copy of a game, they could instead take the cartridge to a kiosk at supporting retail locations, where a game purchased could then be downloaded directly to the cartridge.

Fire Emblem[]

The Super Famicom has seen four Fire Emblem titles released. The first two, Mystery of the Emblem and Genealogy of the Holy War, released in 1994 and 1996 respectively. Archanea Saga was a four-episode Satellaview service title that was originally broadcast in 1997. The final Super Famicom Fire Emblem title, Thracia 776, first released as a title available through the Nintendo Power service in 1999, subsequently received a boxed retail release in 2000. Other Super Famicom/Super NES titles produced by Fire Emblem series studio Intelligent Systems include Super Metroid and Super Famicom Wars.
