Fe13 inexorable death fort steiger location

Fort Steiger as it appears on the map.

Fort Steiger is a location from Fire Emblem Awakening. One of the three strongholds of Walhart the Conqueror, it is located centrally on the continent of Valm. As such, it is also located between Walhart's two other garrisons to the north and south. In Chapter 17, the Valkyrie Pheros commands the forces at Fort Steiger.

Story[]

During Chapter 17 of Awakening, Chrom and his army target the fortress in hopes of dividing the Valmese Imperial Army. They hope that Pheros will be an easier target than Yen'fay to the south or Walhart to the north, which Pheros suspects and takes offense to. She gives the fight everything she's got; however, Chrom and Robin's tactics hold against Pheros's greater numbers.

The tide of battle changes when Resistance reinforcements arrive. Though they should follow Say'ri, she immediately suspects something is wrong. Indeed, the Valmese mage Excellus warps in and informs Pheros that these people who once rallied against the imperials with fight for her now. Pheros says that Excellus must have tortured these people to get them to fight for her. Nonetheless, she needs the numbers and she knows it.

Despite Excellus's meddling, Pheros falls in battle. The Ylissean League gains control of Fort Steiger, but the victory is short-lived. Steiger is surrounded by former Resistance fighters, and most of the troops Chrom sent to fight Walhart and Yen'fay are either dead or turncoats. Moreover, those Valmese armies are marching toward Fort Steiger now. Though things look dire, Say'ri guesses that the Resistance fighters are none too eager to battle. Robin devises a plan: the Shepherds must escape Fort Steiger and head to the Demon's Ingle to face Yen'fay without interference from the dynasts or former Resistance. Chrom leads a force south, while khans Basilio and Flavia plan to distract Walhart's army to buy the main army time to defeat Yen'fay, much to Lucina's dismay.

Geography[]

Fort Steiger occupies a defensible position beside a river that flows through the mountains and the highroad that follows that river. This allows those that control Steiger to also control transportation in the area. Fort Steiger is an imposing building. It is repeatedly described as a castle, though it is uncertain which dynast makes a home there. Aside from the mountains, Steiger is also surrounded by towering trees.

Steiger sits just south of the Mila Tree and north of the Demon's Ingle.

Etymology[]

Steiger is the German word for a mine manager, derived from the word for scaffolding. It directly translates to "climber".
