“Hey, don't look at me like that! I'm pretty decent with my magic. You can hire me for 10000 gold.”
—Hugh, offering his services to Roy

Hugh (ヒュウ Hyuu) is a mercenary mage; he is the grandson of Niime, the son of Canas, and cousin of Nino. He was raised by his extremely severe grandmother and holds a grudge towards her about it. When the Etrurian defectors abandoned their fort, he is so worried about not getting his pay that he goes over to Roy's army for a job. Hugh is portrayed as very naive to the point of being called childish by younger characters like Chad and Raigh, but he is sincere and good at heart.

Hugh must be paid a large sum of money to be recruited. The player has the option of paying him 10,000 gold, but can decline the offer and choose to pay him a lower sum; if the last offer (5000G) is declined, he refuses to join the party. Each time the player declines his offer, his starting stats decrease.

He continued his studies in magic after the war.

Overall

Hugh is the last unpromoted magic user acquired, and he comes with the coveted member card that must be used in order to access to Secret Shops. Stastically, Hugh is a middle ground between Lugh and Lilina, with slightly inferior speed but better magic than the former, and the inverse for the latter. Hugh is also physically the most durable of the three mages, sporting higher HP and defense, and similar resistance.

Hugh's main shortcoming is his late join time, appearing when many units have already promoted. His cost is also another issue, paying less than the rather hefty 10,000G will result in stat reductions. However, despite this, Hugh is a solid choice, provided Lugh or Lilina have not surpassed him in level by too much when he joins.

In regard to supports, many of Hugh's choices are magic users, who may be in direct competition for use with him. He also supports two of the three thieves, who are unlikely to be entering combat.

Character Ending

Hugh - Streetwise Mage (世長けた魔道士 Yo taketa madōshi)

  • Although many nations sought out his service, Hugh turned them all down and led his life on his own. He always was a pain when it came to money, but his magical abilities allowed him to imprint his name on history's face as a great and powerful sage.

Trivia

  • On the official Japanese website for Nintendo, Hugh won 11th place on the character popularity poll for Fire Emblem: Binding Blade. The male-female vote ratio is 1:1. The voter comments seem to generally focus on his kind and entertaining personality despite seeming greedy and narcissistic.
