“Whaddya mean, thanks!? It's like you're all tryin' to bully me! Man... Little Katri's the only one who understands me... Sigh...”
—Maerhen, upon joining Holmes's group
Maerhen (メルヘン Meruhen) is a playable character from TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga. He is the enemy boss of Map 13. Despite his appearance, he is a deeply religious man. His name is repeatedly forgotten by Holmes.
Maerhen is the leader of the Isla Pirates and the older brother of Poem. Some time before the storyline, he captures Renee, and this leads Attrom to pursue him. Soon, he enters a battle against both Attrom and Holmes and almost dies as a result. However, he is nursed back to health by Katri, and to return the favor, he reveals to her that he spared her father figure, Law, because he was a priest, and treated him with great respect.
In the ending, his identity is entirely forgotten by both Holmes and Runan.
Automatically from the start of Map 14.
Seemingly intentionally, Maerhen has the worst growths in the game by far, and his stats are subpar. A further blow to his worth as a character is his double-edged skill: Mug. This skill can be useful to automatically steal the weapons and items of a defeated enemy, but it also severely hurts the units in the vicinity of the bearer (lowered evasion and hit rates). Since Maerhen does not have much stand alone strength, Mug cannot really be used effectively by him, as he requires the assistance of some allies who will be in danger by battling near him. He is a good candidate to fill the weapon shop at Ligria (which requires a male character to leave the party for a large portion of the game).
- There is a running gag that Holmes can never remember Maerhen's name.
- In a post by Shouzou Kaga, he considered redoing TearRing Saga with similar mechanics to Berwick Saga. In this idea for a remake, Maerhen would've been a Thief Master with more skills and a better performance.
