“Fire burns everything, and then gives birth to something new.”
—Magough to Al

Magough is Al's father and a major character in the Fire Emblem: Hasha no Tsurugi manga. Living in the mountains located between Bern and Lycia with his son, he works as a blacksmith. Though introduced as Al's father, the truth of his origins, as well as his relationship with Al proves to be more complex than originally depicted.

Profile[]

In the past, Magough was a member of a ancient clan that existed since the days of The Scouring known as the Black Bone Clan. While it is not known if he himself lived that long, what is known is that he was present when Melitha and Al, a full and half blooded Archdragon mother and son, were freed from the seal placed on them with the Binding Blade by Hartmut 1000 years prior. Freed by the clan's leader, Audamorze with the intentions of stealing their powers, Magough was responsible for overseeing the pair of dragons, and it was in this time that his devotion to the cause of the Black Bone Clan began to waiver. He eventually would be responsible for betraying the clan, and freeing both Al and Melitha, with Melitha unfortunately being killed in their escape and merging her body with the Champion's Blade, a blade created by the Archdragons themselves. Magough would take both the blade and Al and flee to live in the mountains.

Whether it was before deserting the clan or after is unclear, but at some point in time Magough became acquainted with the hermit Niime, sharing his research in ancient magic and dragons. She would even visit him in his mountain home from time to time.

At another point prior to the start of the manga, Al is shown training attempting to destroy a dead tree with a stick while Magough sits polishing the Champion's Blade. Al grows tired of hitting the tree and claims that no one could destroy a tree with a stick, Magough then demonstrates a powerful technique, "Urdia a Lagardo" that destroys not only the tree, but the ground and a large boulder some distance away. Amazed by his fathers power, Al wonders if he could ever perform a technique like that, which Magough affirms. Al also question Magough if he used to wield the Champion's Blade, which he denies, but when Al asks if the sword was for him, Magough states that he may be able to wield it when he gains true strength.

On Al's fifteenth birthday, he decides set out on a journey to decide what he wants to do. Before he goes, Magough leaves him with the words "Fire burns everything and then gives birth to something new" as well a parting gift in the form of a sword. At some point after Al set out on his journey, Magough was brainwashed by Audamorze and made to serve the Black Bone Clan once again under his original title of "One Horned". Under this guise we see him in the Nabata Desert where he steals the Legendary Weapon Forblaze from it's shrine in Arcadia. It is also possible that he was responsible for the theft of multiple other Legendary Weapons across Elibe save for Aureola, which was taken from it's original location by Yoder as a precaution.

Magough is present during the final battle between the Lycian League and Bern, where he kidnaps Tiena along the Aureola tome that she has with her. After the war, Al, Gant and Kilmar find that Tiena has been taken and wishing not to burden Roy, accept the invitation to be teleported to the location Tiena is located. There they are confronted by Audamorze who offers to release Tiena so long as Al gives himself up, which Al refuses stating that he will save Tiena. Audamorze then sets "One Horned" to fight Al, who is unaware of his true identity, with the Blazing Blade Durandal. It is not until Al breaks Magough's mask that he realizes who he is fighting, this leaving him unable to continue, that is until Gant is nearly killed by Magough and Al stabs his father in an attempt to save Gant's life. Audamorze's mind control undone, Al believes that he has killed his father, and giving into despair, he transforms fully into an Archdragon.

As soon as Al transforms, Audamorze uses the power of all the Legendary weapons, to steal Al's draconic power and transform himself into an Archdragon. A still alive Magough tells Al of his past with he and his mother, inspiring Al to keep fighting. After a hard fought battle, Al is able defeat Audamorze with the power of the Champion's Blade, disappearing into a immense light.

Magough survives his injuries from the final battle, and afterwards returned to the mountains where went back to being a blacksmith. The swords that he would forge would go on to become famous, though he himself never again wielded a sword, living a peaceful life instead.

Personality[]

Magough is mysterious and reserved, never showing strong emotion and usually with a stern look on his face. It can be assumed however, that given initial devotion to the cause of the Black Bone Clan, that he held the same contempt for humans and dragons that Audamorze had, though it would seem that any such feelings have gone completely, or he is otherwise good at hiding them. It is thanks to Melitha and Al however that Magough changed at all, as simply watching them had a profound effect on him. He sees the both of them as a light that ultimately saved him.

Despite the initial intentions that he and his clan had for Al, after taking Al has his son, he truly and deeply cares for him as though he was his own flesh and blood child. Magough is responsible for teaching Al all the skills in combat and survival that he has and is likely the one that gave Al his "never say die" attitude. While it is never properly explained why he kept his past a secret from Al, it is likely out of a desire not to complicate his and Al's relationship by revealing he isn't his real father.

Magough's abilities as a combatant are beyond reproach, as he is able to easily wield Roland's legendary blade, paired with his superhuman strength, he is a force in battle. He is likewise highly knowledgeable in areas such as ancient magic a dragons, likely from his time with the Black Bone Clan, even impressing Niime in this regard. His skills as a blacksmith are also worthy of note, as in his ending it is stated that the blades he forged became famous.

Ending[]
