“'Oh, hey' yourself! I've sprouted 14 gray hairs fretting over you!”
—Maribelle to Lissa in Chapter 2.

Maribelle (マリアベル Mariaberu, Mariabell in the Japanese version) is a playable character from Fire Emblem: Awakening.

According to the official Japanese website, she is voiced by Hiromi Igarashi.[1] In the English version she is voiced by Melissa Fahn.

Maribelle is a member of Chrom's Shepherds, and is the daughter of the Duke of Themis, an influential noble family in Ylisse. She is the mother of Brady, and can potentially be the parent of Lucina and Morgan. Her birthday falls on April 14. According to her in-game profile, Maribelle is said to have the worst sleeping positions in the army, and frequently tosses in her sleep.

Maribelle is first introduced in Chapter 2 when Lissa introduces the Avatar to the Shepherds, where she is initially appalled by his/her apparent lack of decorum in entertaining Vaike's crass burping exercise. As she later storms off, Lissa divulges that it will take her a fairly substantial amount of time for her to warm up to the Avatar.

Maribelle is later captured by Gangrel and his Plegian force, under the farcical justification that she had trespassed upon their borders, and could possibly be a Ylissean spy. Upon the Shepherds' arrival within the domains of Plegia in a bid to form a truce with Gangrel, they are greeted with not just the deplorable sight of Maribelle held captive in binds, but also Gangrel's despicable demand for the Fire Emblem to be handed over in exchange for Maribelle's life. Refusing to allow such a crucial national relic to be exchanged for a life that she regards to be worthless in comparison, Maribelle vehemently urges Chrom to not acquiesce to Gangrel's demands and leave her, alongside hurling abuse in response to Gangrel and Aversa's nonsensical accusations. Growing frustrated and impatient over the indecisiveness of Emmeryn and Chrom, Gangrel proceeds to send a ragtag of Barbarians in a botched attempt to wrench the Fire Emblem from the party. As the main party is distracted by Gangrel's sudden display of hostility, Aversa sidles up to Maribelle, taunting her for being the possible cause of House Ylisse's ruin. At this point, a swirl of wind engulfs the barbarian holding Maribelle, and as he falls back, Ricken dashes into the scene. Stunned by Ricken's jarring entrance, Maribelle exclaims incredulously and is rooted to the spot. Ricken then proceeds to cast another Wind spell at Aversa before escaping with Maribelle. After the ensuing battle concludes, Maribelle is assailed with Lissa's concern, to which she gently responds with calm reassurance. The Avatar then steps in to express relief at her safe return, to which she responds with begrudging gratitude. Maribelle will then strengthen her resolve to fight for the sake of Ylisse, following Chrom's army to achieve this goal.

Should Chrom marry Maribelle at the end of Chapter 11, Maribelle will assume the role of the new Queen of Ylisse and thereafter conceive Lucina two years later. After the ambush on Carrion Isle, "Marth" reveals her identity as Chrom's daughter, Lucina, from the future. Upon witnessing Lucina weeping into Chrom's arms, Maribelle initially mistakes her for the immoral mistress of Chrom, and, in spite of her vain attempt to continue up-keeping her noble decorum, eventually loses her temper out of hurt. When first informed of Lucina's identity shortly after, Maribelle takes this as a means employed by Chrom to further mock her loyalty to him, and, affronted, proceeds to accuse him of lying to her. In a bid to further prove her identity, Lucina directs Maribelle's attention to the Brand of the Exalt manifested on her left eye - A spitting reflection of that which is possessed by the infant Lucina. Maribelle's first instinct is to react with horror, fervently believing that her infant daughter had been kidnapped and enlarged. After Lucina imparts the woeful tale of her destitute future to her parents, Maribelle, finally convinced of her identity, proceeds to embrace her, tenderly praising her for her courage as she does so.

Prior to the events of Paralogue 7, upon witnessing a hapless priest and a band of villagers being threatened by a brigand vigilante group, Maribelle urgently presses Chrom to make haste to their aid. On arrival at the temple grounds at which the scene takes place, she asserts her zealousness in purging the vicinity of the brigand threat. If Maribelle were to be directed to speak to Brady, she will, in response to him laughing out of relief and happiness upon seeing her, respond with disgust and outrage, as she mistakes him for being affiliated to the crude, low-born masses. When Brady proceeds to reveal his knowledge of her name, Maribelle, further repulsed by his boldness, proceeds to accuse him of being lecherous before storming off. After the battle concludes, Brady will seek an audience with Maribelle, where he reveals his identity as her son by referring to her as "Ma". Refusing to believe his claim, Maribelle sardonically replies that her healing capabilities are ones that are incapable of mending Brady's lascivious tendencies. Brady then presents her a carbon copy of her ring, and, before he can continue speaking, Maribelle cuts in and launches into a tirade, accusing him of having purloined her personal possessions. Clearly irritated by his mother's display of unreasonable obstinateness, Brady yells at her to check that her ring is still intact on her finger, and upon doing so, Maribelle is forced to acknowledge the truth of his claim. She then laments over how her future self has failed to raise him into the gentleman that she envisions her son to be, before reverting to her senses and reassuring him that she will assume the burden he has borne on his behalf. As Brady, touched by Maribelle's words, begins to tear up, Maribelle's maternal instincts are essentially triggered, compelling her to follow suit.

After the war, Maribelle will return to Themis and become a magistrate, demanding equal justice to both commoners and nobles alike.

In her supports with Gaius, it is revealed that in a time long come to pass, Gaius's plan to steal from the Ylissean treasury was foiled when he was captured. Pushing the responsibility of the plot onto Maribelle's father and causing him to be put on trial, this has thus resulted in Maribelle harbouring a deep-seated resentment towards Gaius. This hatred is later vanquished when Gaius, albeit reluctantly, admits that he had done so in order to protect her from being targeted by the nobles who had plotted against her father.

Maribelle is a typical noblewoman, trained in the classical and finer arts of the higher ranks in society. Ironically, this has sparked within her an interest in the "plebeian" lifestyles of the common citizenry of Ylisse, in turn motivating her aspiration to become a magistrate that fosters equal rights between both the nobility and the common folk alike. She tends to come off as being snobbish and prideful, warming up rather slowly to others. Once she has developed a fairly intimate relationship with a given individual, she becomes much kinder and is more sensitive to the emotions of the other party. This personality of hers has had a negative impact on her social life during her childhood, in which she was alienated by many of her fellow noble peers, who, perceiving it as weird and bizarre, took to cruelly mocking her and falsifying rumors about her. Lissa is by far the only person willing to befriend Maribelle and accept her for who she is, compelling Maribelle to view Lissa as her most treasured friend. In gratitude for Lissa's friendship, Maribelle has vowed to protect her, even at the cost of her own life.

Class SetsEdit

Base ClassEdit

Maribelle is a very capable healer in her base class. This is attributed to the fact that she possesses a slightly higher Magic growth rate than Lissa does, meaning that she will be able to become a much more effective healer at a faster rate, alongside the fact that her being on horseback allows her to be fairly mobile. Furthermore, Maribelle's high Luck growth rate will see said stat consistently rising with each level up that she attains, allowing her to not just be able to dodge more proficiently, but also be protected from the threat of enemy critical attacks. However, physically-wise, Maribelle is rather fragile, rendering her incapable of withstanding melee-based attacks - The result of her low Defence growth rate and cap. Thankfully enough, her Luck and Speed growth rates may just serve as a panacea to this issue, as they will concurrently build up her ability to dodge enemy attacks as she rises through the levels. During the process, however, one must keep her away from sustaining too many physical attacks, as just one successful may prove to be fatal to her.

If promoted into a Valkyrie, Maribelle becomes a very effective mage-killer unit, albeit one that suffers from low Defence. As before, her mid-high Speed and Skill will be able to offset this problem, as she should thereafter be able to dodge most attacks. It is highly recommended to expend Dracoshields on Maribelle to remedy her low Defence, especially in the event that units with high Skill and Luck like Heroes manage to overwhelm her. Adding on to these benefits is the Dual Support+ skill; The best skill the Valkyrie class has to offer, this will allow Maribelle to serve as a potent support unit under Pair Up and Dual System situations.

As a War Cleric, Maribelle will be able to sustain physical damage much better, as she is imbued with a higher Defence cap - One that comes, however, at the cost of a small cap reduction in Magic, Speed and Resistance. In this class, she will be able to learn the Renewal skill, one that is extremely useful in prolonging her overall battlefield effectiveness by extending her durability. In spite of these benefits, Maribelle will be impaired by her atrociously low Strength, and will thus be unable to inflict copious amounts of damage with her weapon of choice. This may be rectified by increasing her Axe proficiency by enough notches to grant her the ability to wield Bolt Axes. On the contrary, if Maribelle is ultimately intended to be used as an offensive unit, it is best for the player to get her to pick up the Renewal skill before re-classing her into a Valkyrie.

Maribelle's re-class options are that of the Mage and Pegasus Knight class lines. In the Mage-based classes, Maribelle can fully harness her potent Magic and Skill as a Sage, although she will remain resolutely frail physically, a fact that is especially accentuated by her experiencing a fall in Resistance. Re-classing her into a Dark Knight will increase her Defence to a fairly solid cap of 39, at the cost of reducing her Resistance cap from 47 (as a Valkyrie) to 40. While her defences will be fairly competent regardless, Maribelle's Strength still leaves a lot to be desired, rendering her incapable of wielding swords. Furthermore, her stronger Magic is essentially wasted if she were to remain a Dark Knight, as it could be more effectively exploited for both offensive and healing capabilities when she is either a Sage or a Valkyrie. In spite of these discrepancies riddling her re-class options, Maribelle can still stand to benefit from the various skills they have to offer, namely, Tomefaire, Slow Burn, and Lifetaker.

In the Pegasus-based lines, Maribelle will not only remain vulnerable to physical attacks, but also face an increased threat from bow-wielding units; One that cannot be remedied even with her high Skill, Speed and Luck. To this end, it is advisable for Maribelle to only assume these classes once her stats begin capping in others. It is still recommended for her to be re-classed into at least a Dark Flier regardless, as doing so will allow her to learn the Galeforce skill, that which can later be passed on to her son, who would not be able to obtain it otherwise.

Maribelle is, in a similar vein to Lissa, capable of being a Rally Unit, as she can potentially learn all five Rally skills that Lissa can. However, such a role may not be too ideal, as her low Defence, even in the War Cleric class, may serve as an impediment for her survival while supporting everyone else.
