Ayra: My father was assassinated at the Grannvaleian front. When Isaach heard word of the king's death, the people went into a rage! Mariccle thus proceeded to launch a full-scale attack against Grannvale.

Quan: Whew... I just can't imagine Prince Kurth acting so rashly. Does Sigurd know about all of this?
Ayra: No. Sigurd has his hands full here as it is. Besides, I don't think Mariccle...
Quan: ...survived? Prince Mariccle knew he would perish in battle, huh...

Ayra: He believed the future of Isaach rests in Shannan's survival. My job is to make sure Shannan grows up safe and sound.”
—Ayra and Quan talking about Mariccle in Chapter 1 of Genealogy of the Holy War

Mariccle is a character from Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War. He was the crown prince of Isaach, the father of Shannan, and the older paternal half-brother of Ayra. He possessed major Od blood, a trait that is later inherited by his son.

After his own father, Mananan, was slain by Grannvale, Mariccle set out to avenge his father's death. However, Isaach's military might was far below that of Grannvale's, resulting in Mariccle falling in battle. His weapon, the divine sword Balmung, ended up being sealed in the Yied Shrine.

During the events of Genealogy of the Holy War, it is discovered that Mariccle had foreseen his own death and the fall of his country, resulting in him deciding to send his half-sister Ayra and Shannan to the safety of Verdane.

Etymology[]

Mariccle is a corruption of mac Lir. Mac Lir (Son of Lir in Irish) was the surname of the Celtic sea deity Manannán, who is the namesake of Mariccle's father.
