“Hup, two, three, four! Hup, two three, four! Keep it going, Midori. One after the other. You'll get there!”
—Midori in her paralogue

Midori is a playable child character in Fire Emblem Fates. She the daughter of Kaze.

Profile[]

Midori is the daughter of Kaze, the cousin of Asugi, and the niece of Saizo.

In her Paralogue, Midori had just returned from an expedition to gather Dragon Herbs when she is attacked by a bandit. However, Kaze makes an appearance and swiftly deals with the would-be thief. Happy to see her father, Midori tells him that she had retrieved the herbs. However, as she searches her gear, she finds that the Herbs are missing. Desperate to find them, Midori runs off and encounters Candace, who had swiped the herbs.

Thankfully, Kaze and the army take Candace down and retrieve the stolen goods. When Kaze scolds Midori for putting her life in danger for the herbs, she tells him that she was so desperate to retrieve them because the Dragon Herbs could supposedly grant wishes. Kaze still believes that it would have been better to wait for the herbs to grow again a year later, but Midori wanted to prove that she was useful, rather than waiting a year to do so. Realizing that he did not fully understand his daughter, Kaze apologizes for leaving her by herself for so long and decides to bring Midori into the army. Happy, Midori finally has the wish she had hoped to fulfill with the herbs: spending more time with her father.

After the war, Midori developed many new medicines, which saves many lives. If she marries Male Corrin in Revelation, she will become the queen of Valla.

Personality[]

Midori loves to make medicine and has a curious mind, making her a natural researcher. Coupled with her polite and down-to-earth personality, she is an honorable student. She often spends her time gathering precious herbs and other materials to create special tonics for the army to use. She will go out of her way to help out people by creating specific blends for them, even accommodating their special needs such as making a beauty cream for Forrest and a blend for Kana's dragon specifications. Midori never settles on her blends and is always looking to improve her formulas so they have the absolute best outcomes possible.

Her tonics are sometimes known to have very unpleasant odors. Most of this is resultant of some incredibly unusual ingredients and even insects, such as in her support with Ignatius. Midori does not take rejection well in general and sometimes cries when people refuse to take her medicine. Nonetheless, she always brews tinctures with the best intentions and they are extremely effective once the drinker finally ingests it with no negative side effects aside from initial taste. She has the most acute sense of taste to help her with brewing, which makes her even more effective in her craft.

Midori adores Kaze and likes to brag about him whenever the opportunity presents itself. She usually keeps her desires to spend time with him to herself, as she does not want to impede his line of work. Deep down though, she values any time the two are given to be together and enjoys making brews for him the most.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

Base Class[]

Midori is the daughter of Kaze and inherits his Abel archetype stats, meaning that she has high Speed and Skill naturally and both end up with positive cap gains regardless of her mother and her Magic and Resistance never dips into the negative as well. Unfortunately, the other stats fall a bit low, especially her Defense with certain mothers such as Azura, Hana, and Elise, who all drop it by 3. Overall, Midori is not suited for defensive classes, but can be great for most Skill and Speed base classes. While it may seem that she is not suited for Luck based skills based solely on her Luck gains from her potential mothers, she makes up for this with her personal skill Lucky Charm, boosting the activation rate of all Luck utilizing skills, such as Dragon Ward, Miracle, and Profiteer, by 20%. For the most part, Luck based skills tend to revolve around utility or support, so she fulfills this role nicely with her base Apothecary. Upon recruitment, Midori already comes with both Apothecary skills, meaning that she receives stronger effects when using potion items and can move again once ingesting one. Because Apothecary uses Bows and Yumis, she will need to stay away from close combat or else she will be at risk of taking unpunishable attacks.

Midori's two promotion options are Merchant and Mechanist. Merchant provides more supportive skills and introduces the ability to use Lances and Naginatas to give Midori a close-up method of attack. Merchant does not particularly shine in any particular field, but with the solid defensive stats, Midori can perform as a decent wall with some interesting quirks from her class skills. She first learns Profiteer, allowing her a chance to generate Gold Bars. The activation rate is based on her Luck, so it receives the bonus from Lucky Charm, making her a great user for this skill if needing to generate Gold Bars for money. On Conquest, this makes Midori a solid, reliable way to get that much needed funds without the assistance of DLC. However, these gold bars also fuel the second skill in her class set, Spendthrift, which gives her all the benefits of Life and Death, without giving her foes the same benefits, all at the expense of one Gold Bar. If wiling to stockpile gold for this skill, Midori can perform as a solid front line wall so long as she has a healthy supply of them. Mechanist introduces Shuriken to her weapon repertoire, allowing her to apply stat debuffs to her enemies while giving her a 1-2 range weapon to prevent close quarter combat situations. Mechanist provides Golembane mainly for My Castle battles with Puppets, Golems, and other Mechanists as well as a few select chapters and PVP against units with Replicate, which Midori can also learn from this class. Replicate allows her to be in two areas at once, allowing her to spread her supportive skills across the map and activate Profiteer more often if needed. Because she has Ninja as her secondary, promoting her to Mechanist will let her learn Locktouch and Poison Strike as she levels, or immediately upon using her Offspring seal.

Secondary Class[]

Since Midori's base class is not in her Father's class set, she inherits Kaze's Ninja base as her secondary. This means that she does not inherit his secondary, Samurai, which in turn means that unless Midori has Hana as a mother, passing down one of Kaze's Samurai related skills can be a solid option for her skill inheritance. Otherwise, as the daughter of Kaze, she serves as an excellent Ninja and Master Ninja, as the latter is the only new promotion she gains from this set. She learns Locktouch as an additional lock picking unit and Poison Strike, which can help her deal more damage with her usually low strength growths. Master Ninja's Lethality can allow her to instantly down enemies if it hits, though its low activation leaves it somewhat unreliable, especially in a pinch. Shurikenfaire is only particularly useful if Midori remains a Master Ninja or ends as a Mechanist from her base as it grants 5 points to damage when using a Shuriken.

Maternal Inheritance and Tertiary Class[]
  • Female Corrin: Because Corrin has a wide range of stats that differ because her Boon and Bane can differ, Midori's end result can vary. However, as her daughter, she gains access to activating Dragon Veins if used in a story chapter. Corrin passes down the Nohr Princess line. While her promotions from it, Nohr Noble and Hoshido Noble are locked to Conquest and Birthright respectively, both are available in Revelation. Both promotions offer distinct variations for Midori to use as a potential final class. From Nohrian Princess, she can learn Dragon Fang for an impressive offensive skill and Nobility for an experience boost. Hoshido Noble contains mainly supportive skills, both of which compliment her Personal Skill. Dragon Ward gives her adjacent allies a free Pavise and Aegis skill that has already 20% activation rate from Lucky Charm plus half of Midori's Luck. Hoshidan Unity gives her an additional 10% to all activation rates. From Nohrian Noble, she can learn Draconic Hex to punish enemies who attack her by reducing their stats upon ending a battle with her and Nohrian Trust to access her supporting partner's trigger skills in battle.
  • Azura/Hinoka: Azura and Hinoka both pass down the Sky Knight line. Azura gives Midori the highest Spd modifier of all of her mothers alongside Setsuna and serviceable Skill and Resistance changes. Unfortunately, she takes a hit from a slight Strength drop and a heavy Defense drop. Azura can also give her three unique skills from Songstress, giving her two great support skills through Voice of Peace and Foreign Princess, as well as a useful boost from Luck +4 for her Personal skill to utilize in tandem. Hinoka gives no boost to her Strength and Magic, but boosts her Skill and Speed to a decent level. Out of all of her potential mothers, Hinoka gives Midori the highest Resistance boost, allowing her to mitigate her slight weakness to Tomes when using her Bow base. Both Azura and Hinoka also bequeath her with the ability to activate Dragon Veins. Sky Knight has Darting Blow further increasing her Speed, though its effects have little long term benefits as her positive Speed growth means that she doubles most foes naturally except for some of the swiftest enemies. Camaraderie gives her a decent health regeneration when near allies, but stronger versions exist elsewhere. Falcon Knight provides Midori with Rally Speed, a good Rally skill, and Warding Blow to reduce damage from Mages when she initiates. Kinshi Knight is a worthy option given that is is an aerial version of Merchant and provides two interesting skills as the first one, Air Superiority, gives Midori a solid presence as an Anti-Air unit with the skill's boost to Hit Rate and Avoid against flying enemies and her bonus damage when facing them with bows. Amaterasu is a supportive skill, giving her allies within two tiles of her a solid 20% HP regen zone.
  • Beruka/Camilla: Camilla and Beruka both pass down the Wyvern Rider line. Camilla modifies Midori's stats to maintain her strong Speed and Skill while giving her some Defense and Resistance boosts, though at the cost of no benefits to her Strength and Magic and the largest Luck drop of all of her potential mothers, which does hinder her Luck skill activations. Camilla also allows her the ability to active Dragon Veins. Beruka on the other hand gifts her the highest Skill cap alongside Orochi with good Defense and Resistance boosts but most notably has a drop to her Strength and most notably has the lowest Speed modifier alongside of Orochi. From this class, Midori can learn Strength +2 to help her increase some damage initially, although this wears out as she levels up. Lunge allows her to move enemy units deeper into allied lines. From Wyvern Lord, she can learn Rally Defense and Swordbreaker; Swordbreaker is much more useful so that she can avoid getting hit by usually accurate sword-using classes. Malig Knight offers Savage Blow, making her an excellent candidate for a post-battle damage dealer due to her access to Ninja and Mechanist.
  • Elise/Felicia: Elise and Felicia both pass down the Troubadour line, giving her a strong plethora of supportive options. Felicia unfortunately drops Midori's Strength the most of all of her potential mothers, but instead maintains her Speed and Skill while giving her a serviceable Magic and Resistance boost. Elise similarly gives a high Resistance boost and good Speed and Magic, but drops her Skill the lowest alongside Rinkah. Her Defense is also the lowest at -3, tied with several other mothers. Elise also gives her the ability to activate Dragon Veins. The Troubadour line mainly deals with supportive skills which include Demoiselle, boosting male allies near her. Maid provides Live to Serve, which is not very useful to Midori as neither of her paternal classes use Staves while Tomebreaker helps to alleviate her bow preference's weakness in her base class. Strategist has Rally Resistance for a useful Rally skill and Inspiration, a less restrictive version of Demoiselle.
  • Mozu: With Mozu as her mother, her only negative stat drop comes from her strength with only 1. Midori's two standout stats are still her Speed and Skill, with a solid 5 and 4 boost respectively. Mozu is the only potential mother that can give her Villager. Her main blessing for Midori is access to Aptitude, granting her slightly higher growths rates for all of her stats, great for training and usage in future playthroughs using the Logbook. Her only new promotion is Master of Arms, which gives her physical weapon diversity. She learns Seal Strength to cripple physical enemies, good to stack on manipulation of weapon ranges in her base class and its promotions. Life and Death stacks very nicely with Spendthrift, as the former decreases damage taken by 10, canceling out the negative effects of Life and Death, while also increasing damage dealt by 10, so a total of 20 with both skills. The only downside is this only works during the player phase and makes very very vulnerable during enemy phase, so the player should be cautious not to leave her expose after going in for a kill. Mozu is also unique in that she can pass down Archer line skills to her. It is notable that Midori will be able to learn Aptitude as a Merchant if Mozu is her mother, as Merchant is the promoted version of both Villager and Apothecary, meaning there is no need for Mozu to pass down the skill, so she can pass on Quick Draw, Certain Blow, or Bowfaire, depending on how much the player is inclined to grind.
  • Orochi: Orochi raises her Magic a great deal with a solid 4 increase and a 5 to her Skill. She has the lowest Speed boost out of all of her potential mothers, tied only with Beruka, with a 2 point increase. Because of Midori's slightly higher Magic growth and cap, she can utilize magic damaging weapons like the Shining Bow, Bolt Naginata, and Flame Shuriken for her base class' promotions with good results. Her Magic cap is actually higher than Orochi and most of her stats exceed her except for Luck, making her perfectly usable with her inherited Diviner. Future Sight receives a boost from her Personal Skill, giving her more EXP per battle. Onmyoji's Tomefaire increases her magic potency when wielding a Tome or Scroll. Basara has Rend Heaven for a damage boost for her attacks when she battles and Quixotic for higher Skill based skill activations and Hit Rates for battle, though her enemies will receive the benefit as well.
  • Rinkah: Rinkah drops her Strength a little but keeps most of her other stats in positive gains, with her Speed remaining quite high. For more balanced stat results for Midori, Rinkah is a solid choice. Rinkah passes down Oni Savage. The class is a much more balanced axe and club wielding class compared to the glass cannon Fighter. Its base provides Seal Resistance to cripple high Resistance targets like Diviners and Troubadours. Shove can be used for unit placement manipulations. Oni Chieftain provides Death Blow, giving Midori 20 points to her critical rate when initiating combat, making her an deadly user of Killer weapons as well as Counter to make her dangerous to engage up close, even when equipped with a Bow or Yumi. Blacksmith provides Salvage Blow to give Midori a chance to acquire an Iron Hoshidan weapon, which activates off her luck, thus utilizing her Personal Skill, It also teaches Lancebreaker to give her the capability to take down Lance users with more ease.
  • Sakura: Midori's inheritance from Sakura drops her Strength, Luck, and Defense caps by 1 while enhancing her Magic, Speed, Luck, and Resistance. Sakura also gives her the ability to use Dragon Veins. Sakura is the only non-Corrin mother that passes down Shrine Maiden. With this class in Midori's repertoire, she gains Miracle, which can leave her at 1 HP if she takes lethal damage and activates based on Luck, thus building off of her Personal Skills. She also learns Rally Luck for one of two rally skills in this set for supportive options. Onmyoji generally only provides one useful skill, Rally Magic, as it is her second Rally Skill and Tomefaire is only particularly useful if planning on keeping Midori in Onmyoji. Priestess gives her access to her Bows and Yumi's once again, so if looking to fully exercise her supportive options by giving her the ability to heal while retaining her usage of bows, this is the class to do so. If not keeping her in this class, it provides good support skills for mainly herself to keep herself healthy with Renewal, which is a stronger and more reliable regeneration skill compared to Good Fortune, which does not activate always like Renewal does. Countermagic makes her dangerous for magic users as it makes any magic damage dealt to her reflect half the damage back at her assailants.
  • Setsuna: Setsuna's main blessing is her incredible boost to her Speed with an impressive cap boost of 7 and a good 4 boost to Skill. Unfortunately, her other stats are not quite as stellar, with none falling lower than her -2 to Luck, but no other rising more than +1. Setsuna passes down Archer, which is a more offensive bow class compared to her supportive bow using base class. Skill +2 is not particularly useful in the long run as Midori has a solid enough growth to make it quickly lose potency. Quick Draw adds an additional 4 damage when she initiates a battle, so if using her offensively, she benefits from this needed extra free damage. Sniper brings her bow prowess to its maximum, allowing her to reach S-Rank, though at the cost of losing any close quarter combat weapons. Certain Blow adds 40 to her hit rate when initiating, nearly guaranteeing that she will hit her enemies, though her solid Skill and Speed can make this skill a little redundant on most enemies, though it can be useful to negate the weapon triangle penalties when facing high speed sword and tome users. Bowfaire further increases her bow damage by giving 5 free damage when attacking so long as she is equipped with one. It also gives the Kinshi Knight promotion, which is explained under Azura and Hinoka's section above.

Friendship Classes[]

  • Selkie: Selkie provides her with Diviner and its promotions, Onmyoji and Basara. Midori may struggle in this class due to her low Magic growth. It is best to simply get Basara from this class due to Rend Heaven as an offense skill. Quixotic is the primary skill for Midori though, because of the increasing activation rates which stack very nicely with luck-triggered skills.
  • Ophelia: Ophelia provides her with Dark Mage and its promotions, Sorcerer and Dark Knight. Although Midori may struggle to deal damage effectively with magic due to her low Magic growth, this is partially redeemable with Dark Knight if the player had trained her in swords from any of her sword using classes. From Dark Mage, Midori can benefit the most off of Heartseeker to drop Avoid Rate of typically speedy units like Swordmasters. From Sorcerer, she can learn Vengeance to pack heavy damage as she loses more HP, and Bowbreaker to make her an effective bow killer. From Dark Knight, she can learn Seal Magic to hinder high magic users and Lifetaker to quickly restore health from defeated enemies.
  • Female Kana: Kana provides her with her secondary class, which is dependent on what talent the player put on Corrin when starting up a new playthrough.

Base Set[]

Forgoing her inherited Spd that she and her father are known for in Fates, Midori is slow for a standard bow user. However, her most notable feature is her incredible 41 neutral Atk and modest 34 Def which gives her a physical bulk score of 75 on top of her 41 HP. While her Res leaves little room to make her a mixed tank, Midori's capabilities as a physical wall, especially as a Red Bow Infantry Unit, cannot be questioned.
Her Spendthrift Bow increases her in-combat capabilities as she gains +7 Atk while her opponent takes a -7 Atk penalty. While it carries a heavy penalty of +2 to her special cooldown after combat (though this cannot exceed its maximum charge), the increased damage she deals and the reduced damage she takes heavily outweigh the con - Midori effectively has a hidden 60 Atk and 41 Def out of the box and is fully capable of activating short-charge Specials with some minor tweaks.
Midori can buff allies by using her Rally Atk/Def+ to give the ally +6 to both. Close Foil grants her an additional +5 Atk/Def during combat if she is attacked by any physical weapon and can counterattack against all close range physical units as well. Chill Attack forces a -7 Atk reduction to the foe with the highest Atk, which stacks with Spendthrift Bow's effect if she is attacked, enough to cripple some of the strongest units in the game into a pitiful level of damage.

Counters[]

Midori's alarming physical bulk, rivaling even most Armors, comes at the heavy cost of little to no protection from Magic as none of her skills give her any sort of boosted protection. As such, most Mages can deal critical damage to her, though Green mages should remain cautious. Dragons are the only close range units who can attack her adjacently and not worry about counterattacks, as dragons are magic-based melee and do not trigger Close Foil. Blue Dragons such as Legendary Tiki, Female Corrin, and Lilith make nice counters due to color advantage, though the latter should be wary of the effective damage of bows against her. Dazzling Staff/Wrathful Staff units can easily poke her out and even deal lethal damage in a single round if their Spd is high enough as Dazzling Staff negates her counterattacks.

Skill Inheritance[]

Midori is best not even attempting to cover her weakness and should polish her already monstrous strengths as a physical tank and can be exceptionally powerful as a baiting defensive unit; as such, Spendthrift Bow and Close Foil will always be her Weapon and A Slot of choice. Reposition works nicely on Midori as she can place her ally behind her and take a hit from an enemy in their stead. Noontime is especially strong on her as its cooldown count of 2 can charge quickly in combat, and healing 30% of the damage dealt goes a long way with Midori's raw damage output. Moonbow can also be run if desiring more damage, but should not be the primary choice.
While Chill Atk is a good B Slot for Midori, it is a common inherit as well as a Sacred Seal, so she has much stronger options for those willing to fodder some rare units. Lull Attack Defense negates any of the foe's pre-battle Attack and Defense buffs and inflicts an extra -3 to both stats, further establishing Midori's dominance as a physical tank. Null C-Disrupt is a niche-but-effective passive that negates skills/statuses that prevent counterattacks, which can make Dazzling Staff and Firesweep units think twice before engaging.
Smoke Skills, mainly Attack Smoke or Defense Smoke, are a natural choice for the C Slot and Sacred Seal as Midori will inevitably be doing a lot of frontline tanking, allowing her to debuff and repel many units at once. Threat. Atk/Def is another powerful option, as if an enemy ends their turn near Midori, they will suffer -5 to Atk/Def while Midori's Atk/Def is reinforced by 5.

Trivia[]

  • Midori shares her English voice actress, Sarah Blandy, with Kagero, Layla, Fae, and Nino.
  • Midori was voted the 22nd most popular female on Nintendo's official Fates character poll.
  • Midori has a unique victory animation as an Apothecary and a Merchant.
