“I would be lying if I said I did not wish it were that simple. But history needs to remember that when Macedon went astray, it was a Macedonian who set things right.”
—Minerva, before retaking Macedon in Shadow Dragon

Minerva is a playable character in the Archanea Series. She is the princess of Macedon, the middle child of the Macedonian royal family, being the younger sister of Michalis and older sister of Maria, and the leader of the Whitewings: Palla, Catria, and Est.

Profile[]

War of Shadows[]

Before the wars, Minerva lived in peace in Macedon. Once her older brother Michalis became a knight of Macedon, she followed in his footsteps, and even founded her own order of knights called the Whitewings. As Dolhr rose to power, it requested Macedon's allegiance. The siblings' father, King Osmond, denied the request and asked Archanea to send reinforcements since Macedon is a suzerain of Archanea. The reinforcements do not come, and Osmond died suddenly. Michalis announced that it was the work of an Archanean assassin. Minerva was skeptical, however, because she knew of her father and brother's rocky relationship and disputes over Macedon's allegiance with Archanea. Michalis seizes control of Macedon and allies with Dolhr. Minerva resented the idea, but before she can act, Michalis imprisons their younger sister Maria, making her Dolhr's hostage, and informs Minerva that Maria will be put to death if she does not cooperate with Dolhr. Upon hearing this, Minerva realizes that Michalis has killed her father, but, as she cares deeply for her little sister, has no choice but to serve him.

Minerva serves Macedon against her judgment to protect Maria for a period of six years. As Michalis is King of Macedon, Minerva becomes Macedon's main general. Minerva is placed in charge of the Dolhr alliance’s attack on Aurelis. During one attack on Aurelis, Minerva finds soldiers of her nation deserting their posts and looting the villages of Aurelis and attacking the civilians. Unwilling to let this injustice happen, she, along with her Whitewings, a mysterious man, his subordinate horseman and his subordinate knight, and eventually a Macedonian bishop assault the deserters. With the help of these allies, she eventually brings down the deserter's leader. After this, a Macedon soldier asks if he can investigate the unknown man who assisted her and expresses his belief that he was actually the Coyote, Hardin. Minerva says the connection is impossible and orders her troops to stay away from the man and his allies, as under Macedon's allegiance with Dolhr, Minerva and Hardin are enemies.

Minerva's army succeeds in taking Aurelis Castle, and she orders her subordinates Emereus and Merach to protect the castle. Still trying to protect Maria, she orders her armies to hound Aurelis' Coyote Hardin and Princess Nyna, but when they meet up with Marth and his army, they defeat Minerva's subordinates and retake Aurelis castle. Minerva is punished for this, and is then put under General Harmein, and she and her Whitewings are ordered to stop Marth and his army from reaching Archanea. Though she hates General Harmein's tactics and does not want to fight Marth, she cannot rebel lest Maria be killed. Minerva, who cannot bear the servitude much longer, withdraws from the battle with her Whitewings and Harmein is defeated. Minerva plans to lead the Whitewings against Dolhr, but she cannot carry out her plans because Maria is still in jeopardy. Minerva is punished yet again for her minor betrayal of Harmein, and she is separated from her Whitewings. Before she is separated from them, Minerva manages to tell Catria to request that Marth rescue Maria from Castle Diel in Archanea. Minerva, knowing that she has treaded on thin ice by betraying Harmein, is afraid for her sister and leaves her post to visits Maria's prison, just to ensure she's still safe. She ask the prison general Zharov for permission to see Maria for awhile, but she is denied. Marth's army arrives at the prison at the same moment, so Minerva, relived, waits for Marth to rescue Maria. As soon as she sees Maria and Marth emerging from the prison, she meets him and tells him that she is now fighting alongside his forces to redeem Macedon, as her brother Michalis has corrupted it. Minerva is then approached by Maria, who is now fighting alongside Marth as well. Minerva is relieved to see Maria safe, and tries to keep her that way by attempting to discourage her from fighting. Maria assures Minerva that she will fight so she never has to burden Minerva again, and Minerva vows to protect her as well.

Minerva continues to fight alongside Marth, and while in Gra she finally meets up with Palla and Catria, who are deployed from the Macedon army to assist King Jiol against Marth. However, as they know Minerva is with Marth, they speak to him and join the ranks of Marth's army to fight alongside Minerva. Minerva apologizes to Palla for involving the Whitewings in her personal battles, and encourages Catria to keep fighting despite their conflicting relationships. The youngest Whitewing, Est, finally joins with Marth's army in Grust, after retrieving Mercurius, and Minerva praises Est for her actions.

When Marth and his army finally enter Macedon, Marth tries to discourage Minerva from fighting, and she explains that she has no reservations against fighting her countrymen, as she must stop her brother from corrupting Macedon. Though she still loves him in some way, Minerva wants to punish her brother herself. She meets Michalis in battle and defeats him, though she is unable to deal him the killing blow. Maria then houses Michalis away in the palace. Minerva assists Marth in defeating Medeus and ending the war. After the war, she does all she can to restore Macedon, which, unfortunately for her, means taking the Macedonian throne in Michalis' absence, though she has no want of it.

War of Heroes[]

After two years, Minerva is suddenly overtaken by rebelling Macedonian citizens and was captured. She was rescued by Michalis and taken to Khadein, so that she could reunite with Marth and help him in his quest. Minerva proved vital in waking Maria from Medeus' mind control. After the battle, Minerva renounced the throne of Macedon to Marth and went to work at Lena's monastery with Maria.

In the remake, she also helped save Michalis from his injuries by waiting on his village location.

Personality[]

Maintaining an air of class and composure, Minerva is blunt, direct, yet refined, with a tendency to come off as rather strict and intimidating. However, behind her general deportment, Minerva is kind, genuine, and often an elder sister figure towards those who are close to her. Growing up in her brother Michalis' shadow, Minerva has always been hypercritical of herself and has cripplingly low self-esteem, as she detests praise, being in positions of reverence, or being idolized by Maria.

Out of all of the Whitewings, Minerva and Palla share the closest bond. Palla is the only Whitewing to call Minerva by name as opposed to "Commander" outside of their interactions, and, in their A support, Minerva states that Palla is the sole person she trusts the most.

Minerva is a very strong unit, owing to the benefits of her Wyvern Knight classline. She is very tanky, with high Strength and Defense, along with a Weapon Level sufficient to carry nearly anything the player would want to give her, and she caps it off with flight. Her only minor weak point is a mediocre base Speed of 6, which heavily encourages using a Speed Ring on her (preferably the one in her joining chapter), but this is still enough to double slower enemies if she sticks to swords, and her growth of 40% is fairly good. Promoted Pegasus Knight units will outclass her, but this isn't much of a mark against Minerva when the promotion item in question is incredibly scarce, only showing up near the endgame. Minerva can stay useful throughout the entire game, and if given a Speed-boosting item, she will be downright excellent.

In both books of Mystery of the Emblem, Minerva is one of the best characters available. This largely owes to her massive jump in Speed, allowing her to double practically any enemy. This turns her into something of a flying tank, able to swoop in and one-round easily. She will be forced to dismount in indoor chapters, but her bases are simply so high that she remains competent even when off her dragon. She can also wield the Lady Sword, giving her another strong option. Though Minerva must be used in the final chapter, this should rarely be a source of complaint.

In the transition to Shadow Dragon, Minerva gains a very significant benefit: axe use, and by extension, Hauteclere. Hauteclere is the strongest axe in the game, and Minerva is likely to be the player's only character capable of wielding it for some time. Due to her axe rank, she also gains weapon triangle advantage over the majority of enemies, along with the ability to wield weapons like a forged Hammer or Halberd to one-shot certain enemy types. As ever, her Speed, Strength, and Defense are all vitally high, enough that she can take care of herself at base. The higher difficulties and powerful enemies mean that Minerva may suffer as the game goes on, but her growths are good enough to at least keep pace with her allies. Minerva's options to reclass are limited at best, as her main selling point is her axe rank.

Minerva is a very solid unit in New Mystery, boasting most of the advantages of her Shadow Dragon counterpart: Hauteclere, high base stats, solid growths, her Dracoknight classline, and a good axe rank. As before, she may have some difficulty in the later parts of the game, but she is rarely ever bad. She is required to be used in the final chapter to obtain the best ending, but this is hardly a burden for the player.

Base Set[]

Minerva is a Flying Axe unit, which serves as a bit of an advantage due to the low number of units in this combination. That being said, being a 5 Star Book I unit makes her difficult to obtain multiple copies and some of her competitors such as Cherche, Camilla, and even a younger version of her have the means to secure multiple copies without much assistance needed. Even so, Minerva is flexible and a well-rounded unit with only her magical bulk as a small downside. She can be built offensively or defensively depending on the player's preference, but if seeking a more permanent unit for either situation, there are others who can achieve this with ease. Even with her Resplendent Form, Minerva maintains a solid performance without much drawbacks.
Hauteclere is a powerful Axe having both high Mt of 16, but also a special acceleration effect, allowing her to quickly charge her specials. With its later refine, when she activates her special, she adds an additional 10 true damage, giving her a surprising amount of burst even to some very bulky enemies.
Sacred Cowl reduces damage received from ranged attackers by 30%, though unfortunately this does not save her from bows. With Hauteclere, she can usually have this charged at the start of the enemy turn, use it, retaliate, and recharge the special again. Life and Death sacrifices her defenses and pours them into her offense, putting more focus on her offense if desired. Ward Fliers buffs flier ally Def/Res by 4 during combat, giving her synergy with Flier teams.

Counters[]

Reds are Minerva’s biggest weakness, unable to inflict damage on bulky reds like Zelgius and Zephiel, easily doubled by fast reds like Ayra and Owain, or destroyed by red mages such as Celica and Sanaki. As a flier, she is vulnerable to bow units like Brave Lyn, Bridal Cordelia, and Halloween Jakob.

Skill Inheritance[]

Minerva would rather have an offensive special to maximize the benefits of Hauteclere so Luna, Moonbow, and Glimmer all serve as excellent options while she can use Aether for a premium special that not only damages enemies, but also heals her. Reposition is a natural fit for her as a flier as she can mainly use this on flying team to move allies around without worry about terrain restrictions. Fury gives her a flat stat boost for her stats, benefitting her all around. Quick Riposte gives her guaranteed follow-ups and her Spd is high enough to prevent doubling from a lot of units. Alternatively Desperation gives a guaranteed immediate follow-up when initiating.

Base Set[]

Young Minerva is a loaded unit, especially being a free Tempest Trial unit, meaning that those who are looking for a strong grail unit can easily find be rewarded for putting time and resources into her. She is far more specialized than her base form with a strong 36 Atk/37 Spd combo for an offense and a combination of 40 HP and 35 Def for a physical bulk score of 75. Her only weakness is her low Res, sitting at 19. In the end, Young Minerva is a powerful offensive unit and can rival the likes of Cherche in this aspect if not outright outstrip her as the best offensive Axe Flier unit.
Dragoon Axe has a special acceleration effect, reducing her special cooldowns by 1. Also if the opponent she is facing off against is at 100% HP, she gains +4 to her core stats and slows her enemy's special cooldowns by 1. While this makes her effect a bit inconsistent as she has to face off against full HP enemies to rep the full benefits, even with just the special acceleration, Young Minerva can still unleash tremendous damage on her own.
Dragoon Shield is a unique skill for Young I Minerva which shares the same benefit of Iote's Shield by removing her flier weakness. She also gains an additional flat Atk/Spd/Def +3 to her core stats, essentially giving her a discount Fury effect without the after battle recoil and no boost to her already low Res.
Draconic Aura takes 30% of her current Atk and adds that as bonus stats, meaning that she attacks with at least 15 additional Atk. Flier Formation allows her to move to any adjacent space next to a flier ally within two spaces of her, giving her a deceptively large movement range depending on the positioning of her fellow fliers.

Counters[]

Young Minerva is a victim of her Unique Skill A as players have to choose either taking the impressive performance boost and removal of her flier weakness or the ability to counterattack at range, which would work splendidly in tandem, but not separately. Regardless of her chosen Skill A, her glaringly low Res means that most magic reliant enemies such as a Mages, Staff, and Dragon units can easily inflict large amounts of damage, even blue ones, though the latter needs to watch out for Distant Counter packing Young Minerva's. Otherwise strong enough Reds can take a hit from her through color damage and retaliate.

Skill Inheritance[]

Young Minerva is strong enough that putting all of her resources into offense will immediately yield tremendous results or be invested on strengthening an enemy turn build enough to make her a generalist unit. In either situation, Reposition remains the best Assist Skill. Luna allows her to ignore 50% of her enemy's Def, allowing her to shred tanks after two attacks have been traded involving her with her axe's effect. Galeforce can also be put in, mainly for a player turn offensive Minerva, so she can continue advancing and attacking enemies. Her Skill C can be carried with numerous options such as Smoke Skills to reduce the enemy's stats, Wave skills to buff allies and self-buff select stats, and Flier skills if using her on a flier team. Regardless of the type of Minerva run, this remains her only flexible option, regardless of which route is taken.
If looking to put all of one's resources into Minerva's player turn offense, Sturdy Impact or Mirror Impact adds +6 Atk and either +10 Def/Res respectively when she initiates. Desperation, once she is in the damage threshold, means that she can unleash her follow-up attack immediately.
Enemy phase/generalist Young Minerva can maintain her unique Skill A and maintain an overall bulk or use Distant Counter to punish enemy ranged units. Quick Riposte can be run as a means to ensure she can double attack against an enemy who attacks her.

Minerva verdant dragoon pop04 Minerva seems to be having a great time this spring festival. I know she cares a lot about her sister, Maria, too, so I'll bet she's thinking about how nice it'd be to have her join the fun!

Etymology[]

  • Minerva is named for the Roman deity Minerva, goddess of wisdom, justice, and war. Her Greek counterpart is Athena.

Trivia[]

  • In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light Minerva has her own theme, composed mostly of strings. It may have inspired parts of the Shadow Dragon Medley from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

  • Minerva is indirectly mentioned in Palla's base conversations in Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, with Palla stating that she is a beautiful, kind woman and that her siblings have caused her terrible grief.
