“Well, do what you think is best for you. We all carry many burdens... To country, family, duty, honor... However, we are all ultimately free to embrace or reject those burdens. If you find yourself in need of spiritual guidance, speak to me.”
—Moulder talking to Vanessa in a support conversation in The Sacred Stones

Moulder (モルダ, Moruda, translated Mulder in the Japan version) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. He is a mature priest of Frelia, and is gentle and reassuring. He is well trusted by King Hayden, and is sent to aid Eirika alongside Gilliam and Vanessa. He is a very kind person and acts as a father-figure to most characters in the story. He seems either somewhat absent minded or too devoted to his work, such as in his A support with Gilliam, where he is revealed to have carried the crown at King Hayden's coronation, and dropped the crown when a young Gilliam yelled at him to get a hold of himself, or in his supports with Syrene in which he forgets his own birthday.

Moulder is the earliest staff user that the player gains access to, joining with Vanessa in chapter 2. As the earliest staff user, he will have a great deal of utility for a time when he is the only way to heal a player unit without resorting to forts or vulneraries, wasting a turn. Moulder starts the game with a fairly high C rank in staves, and it is very easy for him to acquire the A rank in staves needed to use the powerful lategame staves such as warp. However, Moulder has a great deal of trouble acquiring enough experience to promote and to level up his fairly unremarkable magic to use them well.

As his only ability is staff use, he is locked to gaining roughly ten experience on every turn and cannot speed that up until better staves are acquired or Tethys joins to give him a second move on every turn. For this reason, it may take a very long time for him to get to the minimum level required to promote him, 10, and getting him to level 20, or even 15 before the latest stages of the game is almost impossible unless players deliberately stop the pace of the game to grind him up. Even after that, his magic is still fairly low. This is notably the main reason why he is a less impressive staff user than Artur or Saleh later in, both of whom can reach A rank in time to use warp while having far more magic than he does to use it better for further warps. Nonetheless, he can use staves that do not require magic, such as restore or hammererne, to save other staff users the trouble while they could be doing other things, which gives him some utility even in lategame.

Moulder's base stats are fairly low and his growths are unremarkable. He is very fragile - though slightly less so than the other early healers - and will need protecting if the player wants him to do his work near the front lines. On promotion, he can become either a sage or a bishop to use tomes, but his low magic, especially if he was promoted early, will give him difficulty inflicting notable damage unless he is abusing the effective damage from slayer.

A notable quirk of Moulder's is his abnormally high con for a healer. Though it has few notable uses unless player makes use of the enemy control glitch to make him use Dark Magic, it is very unique regardless. It does also allow him to use Ivaldi wth no attack speed loss, though even with that conscession, he remains one of the least practical users of the divine tome, thanks to the effort required to make him use it, and his mediocre combat stats.

All said, Moulder is an important earlygame healer whose usage falls off due to competition from more capable and powerful units as the game progresses, but manages to avoid becoming completely obsolete with the use of utility staves and minor contributions while other staff users may be busy elsewhere.

  • Moulder, Wise Counselor (心温かき神官 Kokoro atatakaki shinkan)

After the War of the Stones, Moulder continued to serve the royal family of Frelia. His wisdom served to guide King Innes as it had served King Hayden before him.
