“One day, fourteen years ago, a near-dead man with incredibly severe burns was brought to our church. After the head priest saw him, he called him a lost cause and told my mother to start digging him a grave. But my mother wouldn't give up on him, and to everyone's surprise, she managed to stabilize his condition. It took an entire half a year before the man regained consciousness. We learned his name was Alfred, and that he was a master sorcerer. But he still remained bedridden for the next ten years, healing his burns. It was only two years ago that he finally managed to walk again. My mother wept tears of joy at the sight. And then, three days later, she died. She worked herself to death nursing him back to life.”
—Alicia, talking to Mel about Nina
Fourteen years prior to the game's events, Nina participated in the war between Arial and the Theocracy of Gerxel. One year later, a severely wounded Alfred was brought to the church where Nina resided. After examining Alfred, the head priest declared that it was too late to save him and ordered for him to be buried, but Nina decided to nurse him back to health. Out of fear that Alfred might commit suicide, she constantly watched over him. She also fell in love with him, although he never requited her feelings. When Alfred began to walk again after a decade of healing, Nina cried tears of joy, but then died a few days later due to overworking herself.
