  • Rinkah: Did you need something done?
  • Avatar: Sort of. I'd like to ask your opinion on something. Take a look at this map. If we are positioned here, and the enemy attacks from here...what should we do?
  • Rinkah: ...
  • Avatar: If a unit detached and came at them from the river...do you think they'd cluster? If so, we could hit them with a volley...but if we fail, the attacking force might rout.

  • Avatar: Rinkah? Are you listening to me?
  • Rinkah: You know as well as I that I am not a tactician. Why are you here? Hoping to make friends? I'm sorry to disappoint you. I'm just here to carry out orders. Nothing more. Farewell.
  • Avatar: Hey! Hey, wait! I'm not done talking yet!
  • Rinkah: I have nothing to discuss with you. Leave me alone.
  • Avatar: You know I can't do that. We're allies! I have to able to communicate with you.
  • Rinkah: That's not what I meant. I will still listen and follow any orders you want to give. But otherwise, do not speak to me!
  • Avatar: What is wrong with you?
  • Rinkah: *sigh* My apologies. Perhaps I went too far. That is no way to talk to one's superior. I am grateful you spared my life when I was your prisoner. And I will follow wherever you decide to lead us. However I neither need nor desire your attention. Please leave me alone.

  • Avatar: Hey! Rinkah!

  • Avatar: Rinkah! Did you hear me?
  • Rinkah: What is it this time? I told you to leave me alone.
  • Avatar: I wanted to ask you why you insist so much on remaining aloof.
  • Rinkah: If I do, will you leave me be?
  • Avatar: I... I guess I can do that.
  • Rinkah: *sigh* Very well. I keep my distance because it is the law of the Flame Tribe. As you know, we worship the God of the Flame. To honor our God, we keep a fire in the village burning at all times. This is a challenge, and so in order to keep in burning we have effected many laws. One such law directs us to avoid contact with outsiders as much as possible. This is why we live in isolation—and why I would prefer you quit prying.
  • Avatar: How does living in isolation keep the flame burning?
  • Rinkah: It's always an outsider that extinguishes the flame of life. They don't respect it, and so foolishly they run headlong into taboo acts.
  • Avatar: Like putting out the flame?
  • Rinkah: That is one of them, yes. And it has terrible consequences for the transgressor. Once, a long time ago, the sacred flame was extinguished by an enemy tribe. They only wished to cause us harm, but they angered the God of the Flame. The holy mountain then erupted, and fire fell from the sky. Lava decimated the enemy tribe, and by the end of it, there was no trace of them left. The stories say our own tribe suffered greatly as well, however.
  • Avatar: I see. But then why were you siding with Hoshido against Nohr?
  • Rinkah: Because our chief—my father—decided we should cooperate with Hoshido. A fighter should fully commit themselves to every battle, it's true. But to be honest, I had grave misgivings about the whole venture. Bad omens. And those feeling turned out to be well-founded. As you know, I was taken captive.
  • Avatar: I see. You must feel very vindicated.
  • Rinkah: I feel the same as I did before. So. Now you understand. I expect you will stick to your end of the bargain. Farewell.
  • Avatar: Rinkah... There must be something I can do.

  • Rinkah: Well? What is it this time?
  • Avatar: Is there no way I can convince you to be a little more friendly with the others?
  • Rinkah: Why?
  • Avatar: When we spoke of your capture at Nohr's hands...you seemed angry. Do you hate having been caught so much?
  • Rinkah: Of course I do. Being captured is far more shameful a fate than death to a warrior. I wish I had perished that day. I would have retained my dignity, at least.
  • Avatar: But if you died, we'd never have met and worked together.
  • Rinkah: What?
  • Avatar: We're at war. Nothing is certain. One day we celebrate, the next day we may be mourning. But I have to believe there's some kind of order to things. And so I think we were fated to meet as we did, and that we should be grateful for it.
  • Rinkah: I see. I AM grateful we met. But I still feel regret and anger at my capture. It is difficult to be grateful for a misfortune, is it not?
  • Avatar: But in the end it wasn't a misfortune, right? It all worked out. We should thank fate for that—for all the ways it sees fit to connect us. All of us. And I think fate has given you a unique and incredible opportunity.
  • Rinkah: How so?
  • Avatar: It's rare the Flame Tribe interacts with outsiders, right? Then perhaps you should take advantage of this chance to learn about the world. About other people, other cultures, lands, arts, history, technologies... Your people may not have an opportunity like this again for a long, long time. And I think it would be a terrible shame were you to let it slip past you. But... I admit I may feel this way because I spent my entire life trapped in isolation. So the choice is yours. I won't press you further.
  • Rinkah: I see. Very well. I will have to think on it, but your argument has a certain weight. I'll...do my best to try to warm up to the others. All right?

  • Rinkah: No. Thank you.

  • Avatar: So, you had something you wanted to talk to me about?
  • Rinkah: No, never mind. It's not important.
  • Avatar: Are you sure?
  • Rinkah: Maybe we can talk some other time.
  • Avatar: W-Wait! Rinkah! What's wrong? You can tell me. You've finally started to open up. Don't close yourself off now! Please. Let's talk.
  • Rinkah: Hmph.
  • Avatar: Huh? Are you all right? Your face is burning up! Do you have a fever? Are you sick? Let me get you a healer!
  • Rinkah: N-No!
  • Avatar: Are you sure? You're sweating a lot too...
  • Rinkah: I wanted to tell you...
  • Avatar: Yes? Go on.
  • Rinkah: I'm sorry. My pride prevented me from telling you before. I swore I'd never do this. Every time I saw you, I felt ashamed. You were a reminder of my capture. A reminder of my weakness.
  • Avatar: I'm so sorry.
  • Rinkah: But over time, the shame over my capture has been weakenend, and been replaced. I began to wrestle not with my weakness, but with a new feeling.
  • Avatar: A new feeling?
  • Rinkah: Yes. Love.
  • Avatar: Love?!
  • Rinkah: I could not be accept that I had feelings for you. You are a foreigner, an outsider—and a constant reminder of my capture.
  • Avatar: I see. Well, the truth is, I have had feelings for you too. Ever since the day I saw you.
  • Rinkah: Huh?!
  • Avatar: I made excuses for myself, saying I wanted you too make friends and learn. But the truth is, I only wanted to get closer to you, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: Avatar...
  • Avatar: Hahaha. When you think about it, we really did meet in the worst possible way, didn't we?
  • Rinkah: Don't say that! From now on, I will remember it as one of the happiest days of my life. As you said, we should be grateful for everything fate did to connect us.
  • Avatar: Haha. Yes. Thank you, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: There is no need to thank me. I should be the one thanking you—for saving my life. And for igniting this fire in my heart. ... I love you. The flame in my heart will never die. Thanks to you... I now know what true love is.

  • Rinkah: Uh-huh. You talk awfully big for a lapdog.
  • Jakob: Did you just call me a lapdog?
  • Rinkah: So what if I did?
  • Jakob: No matter. I refuse to waste my energy trading childish insults with you. Good day, Rinkah.

  • Rinkah: You're annoying me.
  • Jakob: Pardon? Did you say something, my sweet?
  • Rinkah: I SAID that you're ANNOYING me! You've been banging on about that tea for an hour now! Hasn't it gotten cold?!
  • Jakob: Of course! And yet even still, it is abrosial! But when should I be quieter for you? It's not my problem you're annoyed. All you have to do is ignore me, after all.
  • Rinkah: If you want to talk to yourself so badly, go do it somewhere else!
  • Jakob: It's my business where I talk to myself. If you don't like it, perhaps you should go somewhere else.
  • Rinkah: I was here first!
  • Jakob: Hm. This is strange. I thought your clan encouraged aloofness and independence. So why are you talking to me so much? I must be more charming than I'd thought!
  • Rinkah: Are you making fun of me?
  • Jakob: I thought that much was obvious. Perhaps I should be less subtle in the future.
  • Rinkah: I won't stand for this! Insult me again, and I'll beat you to a bloody pulp! Do you hear me?
  • Jakob: Now, now. Calm down. Here, have some tea.
  • Rinkah: Grrrrrrrrrr.
  • Jakob: You should really learn to control that temper of yours. It will be difficult for you to remain aloof if you let little things like this bother you.
  • Rinkah: Sh-shut up! I don't want to hear about it! Least of all from you.
  • Jakob: Hold! Don't do anything rash, now. How would your tribe look if their princess began assaulting her comrades over trifles?
  • Rinkah: I...will...kill...
  • Jakob: Ah-ah-ah! None of that. Now sit and take this tea!
  • Rinkah: ... *gulp* Th-this is actually pretty good.

  • Rinkah: Uh-huh. So, what did you want? Why are you here?
  • Jakob: Well, you don't waste any time on pleasantries, do you?
  • Rinkah: Heh. Everyone here's always so eager to get to know each other. It can be difficult finding time to be alone.
  • Jakob: Yes, I imagine it must be trying for you.
  • Rinkah: Trying? No, I don't find it so. It's often very pleasant.
  • Jakob: Oh?
  • Rinkah: It's true, my tribe shuns most interaction with the outside world. But that doesn't mean we don't enjoy being around others.
  • Jakob: Really?
  • Rinkah: We just prefer solitude to idle chatter and empty relationships. If a friendship runs deep, we don't oppose its development.
  • Jakob: I see. That is very wise. Were only the whole world like that.
  • Rinkah: Truly. But thankfully, few people here seem to approach friendships superficially. So, contrary to how it might appear, I actually enjoy the company.
  • Jakob: I see. I'm glad to hear it. Does this mean I might consider you a friend?
  • Rinkah: Heh. Perhaps.

  • Rinkah: Do you have feelings for any of the women in camp?
  • Jakob: Wh-what? Why do you want to know?
  • Rinkah: Just answer the question.
  • Jakob: Ah...yes. There is one I have feelings for.
  • Rinkah: I see. So you're taken, then?
  • Jakob: No. She isn't aware of my feelings for her. To tell you the truth, I belived she would never return them. She is quite...aloof.
  • Rinkah: Aloof, huh? So you like the hard-to-get type?
  • Jakob: Not particularly. But there is something special about her. I admire her strength, I think. She is a fiercely independent woman.
  • Rinkah: I see. You may want to consider sharing these feelings with her. I'm sure she would be flattered.
  • Jakob: Perhaps, perhaps. But while we're swapping secrets, I have a question for you. Do you have your eyes on any of the men we serve with?
  • Rinkah: What?! Th-that's preposterous!
  • Jakob: I see I've hit a nerve. Tell me, does he make the most delicious tea you've ever had?
  • Rinkah: What are you trying to say, you-- you--
  • Jakob: I thought as much. I will have to think on this.
  • Rinkah: Think on WHAT, exactly?!
  • Jakob: Whether or not to become a member of the Flame Tribe, of course. How else would I be able to someday marry the woman I love?
  • Rinkah: You mean...
  • Jakob: Oh, don't be coy. I think we both know what I'm talking about. It is nice to finally be able to admit it, though.
  • Rinkah: You idiot! You spoiled it! You didn't even let me tell you myself yet!
  • Jakob: O-oh, my. You mean-- You really-- I was only teasing!
  • Rinkah: WHAT?!
  • Jakob: No, I mean, I was serious about my feelings! I just never thought you could possibly feel the same!
  • Rinkah: Oh, for the love of-- Will you shut up and let me talk already? I love you, Jakob! I love you more than anyone else. And I want you to be mine. There. I said it.
  • Jakob: Rinkah...
  • Rinkah: And there's no need for you to join the Flame Tribe. I know it wouldn't suit you. So...I suppose I'll just have to propose to an outsider. Such things aren't unheard of. But you'd better treat me right, you understand? This is a serious decision.
  • Jakob: Of course, my love. I will serve you always-- I swear it.
  • Rinkah: Heh. Good. So, to celebrate, how about you brew us up some of that famous tea of yours?
  • Jakob: At once, my darling. Anything for you.

  • Silas: Rinkah? Why are you standing off to one side there? Come on, let's go join the others.
  • Rinkah: Nice try. I'm only here to fight. Apart from that, I'll have nothing to do with you. It's the law of my tribe.
  • Silas: Hmm... Then I challenge you to a fight.
  • Rinkah: Is this a joke?
  • Silas: It's a special kind of battle, called Predator. You'll love it, I promise.
  • Rinkah: Huh. Tell me more.
  • Silas: It's a traditional Nohrian war game.
  • Rinkah: Oh yeah? How does it work?
  • Silas: It's simple. One of us is the predator, or just "it," who chases the prey. If the one who's it manages to touch the prey, like this, then the prey loses.
  • Rinkah: H-hey! Hands off!
  • Silas: So now that I touched you, you're "it," and it's your turn to chase me.
  • Rinkah: This is going to be over quick.
  • Silas: Is that so? Then catch me if you can!
  • Rinkah: HEY! YOU GET BACK HERE!

B Support

  • Rinkah: Hmph.

  • Silas: Haha...you wouldn't have had to chase me very far, you know.
  • Rinkah: Huh?
  • Silas: I just ran straight to a nearby troop unit and disguised myself among them.
  • Rinkah: Y-you were hiding the whole time?! You rotten coward!
  • Silas: Oof, that's harsh. What rule is there that says I can't hide?
  • Rinkah: That's your excuse? Tch. Fine. We'll go another round.
  • Silas: Er...
  • Rinkah: Another. Round.
  • Silas: Are you serious?
  • Rinkah: I hate losing. So we're gonna go until I win.
  • Silas: ...have it your way. Which one of us will be "it"?
  • Rinkah: Me, of course. I'm gonna catch you if it's the last thing I do.
  • Silas: I feel like this stopped being a game at some point... Alright then, start counting. The chase will begin once you reach 20.
  • Rinkah: Got it. I'll count. One... Two...
  • Silas: I'm thinking I'd better stay well hidden among the troops this time.
  • Rinkah: Don't TELL me! Just go! Five... Six...

A Support

  • Silas: You absolutely demolished me at Predator the other day. I'm impressed.
  • Rinkah: You got that right! Who's the best predator? I am. It's me.
  • Silas: Now if I'm not mistaken... the law of the Flame Tribe forbids you from interacting with outsiders, right?
  • Rinkah: Yeah, pretty much.
  • Silas: But isn't life under that law a bit dull? I think it would be better for you to get to know your allies instead.
  • Rinkah: What are you getting at?
  • Silas: How did you finally catch me?
  • Rinkah: Well...I talked to the troops and got them to tell me where you ran off to. Then they all helped me...look for you... Oh no... Don't tell me you were trying to get me to talk to people the whole time.
  • Silas: Guilty as charged. I figured it would work, since you'd do anything to win.
  • Rinkah: I don't believe this...!
  • Silas: It wasn't a bad idea though, was it?
  • Rinkah: Yeah... I got to talking to a bunch of people while I was out looking for you. Even the ones I hated t turned out to be all right once I got to know them. A few of them invited me to chat or have dinner. One lady wanted training advice.
  • Silas: That's great! You said yes to at least a few of them, I hope.
  • Rinkah: ... I don't know... Making small talk here and there is fine on its own... But if I get too involved with them, it might go against Flame Tribe law.
  • Silas: I wouldn't know, I suppose. But I'm always willing to lend an ear, if you need one. I'll be seeing you.
  • (Silas leaves)
  • Rinkah: Thanks, Silas. I hate to admit it...but I had fun.

S Support

  • Silas: What ended up happening with all those people you met? Did you hang out with any of them?
  • Rinkah: No...
  • Silas: Oh. I guess you do have to abide by your tribal law.
  • Rinkah: ...
  • Silas: Still, at least you've seen that outsiders have their good sides, too. I'm willing to call that a win. Especially since it helped me make up my mind to propose. Rinkah, will you marry me?
  • Rinkah: Wait... is this another trick?
  • Silas: It's no trick. See. I have an engagement ring and everything. I'd be a very happy man if you accepted it. Granted, your willingness to bend the rules for others doesn't mean you love me... But at least this way I'll know for sure.
  • Rinkah: You know what... I accept. That means we're married now, right?
  • Silas: Er...really? Just like that? I thought you might be upset.
  • Rinkah: Oh, I was. Furious, even.
  • Silas: Huh?!
  • Rinkah: All those invitations to go out with folks, and none of them from you... I kept waiting for you to ask me to do something besides playing Predator. Sure, at first I thought you were a weirdo... But every time after that, I felt myself warming up to you.
  • Silas: Huh...
  • Rinkah: That's why I can't stay mad at you. In fact, I'm bursting with joy...
  • Silas: So am I... It's the best feeling there is.
  • Rinkah: One thing, though... We have to go to the Fire Tribe chieftain for his blessing. I don't know if he'll let me marry an outsider to the tribe... But we have to try. He's very stern, though, and also my father, so this might not end well.
  • Silas: Maybe. But whatever he says, I won't back down. I'll keep pressing at it until he can't refuse anymore!
  • Rinkah: Good. Because he might say no just to see how you'll react. Worst case, he might have you lightly beaten just for asking, so be ready.
  • Silas: "Lightly" beaten?! Hang on, you can't just drop that in and not explain! B-but no...it doesn't matter. I'll best any trial if it means I can be with the one I love!

  • Rinkah: Kaze... I thought I made it clear last time that I didn't want any more sweets.
  • Kaze: Ah. I believe you are confused. It was the mouse with the grumbly stomach that didn't want any more sweets.
  • Rinkah: You little-
  • Kaze: Rinkah, I know you love sweets. And I imagine you avoid them because you think it will make you look soft. But, trust me, no one will think less of you if you indulge yourself now and then.
  • Rinkah: Will you be quiet? My diet is none of your business!
  • Kaze: You are absolutely correct. However, I would be a bad friend indeed were I not concerned with your happiness. I don't think it's good to deprive yourself like this just to hide your sweet tooth.
  • Rinkah: I'm not hiding it. It's just not something everyone needs to know about.
  • Kaze: So then you won't mind if I share it with the others?
  • Rinkah: Don't you dare! Why do you even care so much about what I eat, anyway?
  • Kaze: I don't I care that you seem so concerned with keeping up false appearances. Now, will you please accept this candy? It's your favorite...
  • Rinkah: Haven't I made myself clear? I don't want any more sweets!
  • Kaze: Well, yes, but I already know about your sugary little secret, right? So it's OK. You can eat these without worrying about it.
  • Rinkah: I'm not a damn child! You don't have to feed me. If I want sweets, I'll get some myself.
  • Kaze: You misunderstand. There are too many for me to eat. I'm asking you for help.
  • Rinkah: Hmph... Fine. And, I guess... Well, thanks for your concern.
  • Kaze: Think nothing of it.

  • Kaze: Rinkah, thanks again for helping me finish off those sweets the other day. I didn't know you could fit that much taffy in one stomach.
  • Rinkah: Ugh... I can't believe I accepted food from you again...
  • Kaze: Speaking of which, I was just given another bag today. Care for another round?
  • Rinkah: Again? You've got to be kidding me!
  • Kaze: I know, I know. I tried to refuse again and again, but she wouldn't have it.
  • Rinkah: How do you get all these people to give you gifts all the time? I'm jeal— Um. Gelatin. I'm gelatin.
  • Kaze: What?
  • Rinkah: Nothing. I'm not jealous. Shut up.
  • Kaze: You know, there's an easy way to solve that gelatin problem. If you just told people you like candy, I'm sure they'd be happy to share with you.
  • Rinkah: Thanks, but no thanks. I'm fine.
  • Kaze: Then I will have to engineer a way to get you candy secretly. Perhaps by eating more, you will come out of your shell...
  • Rinkah: I'm not in a shell, and I don't need your help coming out of it! But...if you WERE to find a way to get me more sweets...I might not object.
  • Kaze: Very well. Consider it done.
  • Rinkah: Perfect. Now, if you could just give that bag of candy. And some privacy.
  • Kaze: Of course. Good day, Rinkah.

  • Kaze: Hello.
  • Rinkah: You again? Another load of sweets to drop off?
  • Kaze: No. There is something I wish to discuss with you.
  • Rinkah: Discuss?
  • Kaze: You look disappointed. Perhaps you were craving more sweets?
  • Rinkah: Ugh...
  • Kaze: I suspected as much. Well then, our discussion can wait. For we must find you some treats.
  • Rinkah: No, that's OK. You're not responsible for my stomach, you know.
  • Kaze: Yes, but I like making sure you are content. If I could have it my way, you'd never suffer from anything ever again.
  • Rinkah: That's a little...weird. I can take care of myself, Kaze.
  • Kaze: I know, but I'm afraid I can't help it... I'm in love with you.
  • Rinkah: ... ... What?
  • Kaze: I love you Rinkah. I wish to be your partner in all things.
  • Rinkah: So that's why you've been bringing me all this candy?
  • Kaze: Yes and no. I'd like to think I'd have acted the same way even if I didn't love you. But I can't deny that I took particular pleasure in helping you as a result. And I know a part of me was happy that you kept your sweet tooth a secret. Because...it meant I could do something special for you.
  • Rinkah: Kaze...
  • Kaze: I'm sorry. I've acted...dishonorably.
  • Rinkah: Aw, cut the dutiful-ninja crap, Kaze. You've done no such thing. And...I guess it wouldn't be the worst thing, being with you. Sure, yeah. Why not?
  • Kaze: I...see. So, then...you have no strong feelings for me? Perhaps you should forget I said anything. I do not wish to pressure you into something you are indifferent to.
  • Rinkah: No! You big, dumb oaf. Are you really gonna make me spell it out for you?! Fine! I love you too, and I want to be with you, you gorgeous dastard! Now, can we please move on?
  • Kaze: Well. OK then. So...what do we do now?
  • Rinkah: Heh. You could start by rounding me up another sack of sweets.
  • Kaze: As you wish, my love.

  • Ryoma: Rinkah, do you have a minute? I'd like to talk.
  • Rinkah: What's with you guys?! Hoshidans talk SO much! Can't I get some peace and quiet?
  • Ryoma: I'm sorry if I disturbed you. I wanted to learn more about the Flame Tribe.
  • Rinkah: Forget it! I'm not sharing any of my tribe's secret with you!
  • Ryoma: Come on, RInkah. You know that's not what I mean! We're lucky to hace the Flame Trime as an ally. I'd like to thank your people. When the war is over, I plan to make and official trip. I could use your help preparing.
  • Rinkah: Oh, I see. You think we'll be impressed by some prince showing up?
  • Ryoma: Of course not. This isn't a formality. I want our people to understand each other. For example, your tribe has a unique style of fighting. We could learn from you!
  • Rinkah: What do you mean by style?
  • Ryoma: Rinkah, on the battlefield, you fight like a raging inferno! Does everyone in the Flame Tribe bring such heat to battle?
  • Rinkah: Every single time! We always say, "Offense is the best defense!"
  • Ryoma: I can see that. You erupt into battle with such violence! The enemy loses heart! ... But forgive me for saying this. Sometimes you seem a bit reckless!
  • Rinkah: Reckless?!
  • Ryoma: It seems once that spark is lit, you can't stop until the fire has burned itself out.
  • Rinkah: That's how an inferno works! I won't stop until every last enemy is finished!
  • Ryoma: Isn't that dangerous?
  • Rinkah: I guess so... One time, I flew into such a rage that I ended up getting captured.
  • Ryoma: See? You have to learn to control your temper!
  • Rinkah: Hmph! I don't remember asking for your opinion! Now if you'll excuse me...
  • Ryoma: Rinkah, wait!

B Support

  • Rinkah: Hey, Ryoma. The other day you said I needed to stay calm during battle.
  • Ryoma: I thought you didn't want my opinion.
  • Rinkah: I'm not asking for your opinion. I'm asking you for strategies! I can tell you are a passionate fighter as well, and yet you keep a level head.
  • Ryoma: That's because I have a secret.
  • Rinkah: Oh?
  • Ryoma: Yes. I've got one word for you: meditation.
  • Rinkah: Meditation?! Are you kidding me?!
  • Ryoma: Meditation calms your spirit and heightens your focus. I meditate every morning. The effects last all day... even in the midst of battle. You should give it a try.
  • Rinkah: Hmm... OK. So what do you do? Cross your legs and hum?
  • Ryoma: Just sit however is most comfortable for you.
  • Rinkah: Uh... OK. Like this?
  • Ryoma: Sure. Now empty your mind. Focus on your breathing. In! Out! In! Out! Ahhh!
  • Rinkah: This sounds boring.
  • Ryoma: Empty your mind! You must learn to silence those thoughts. Simply observe.
  • Rinkah: ...OK. ...In. ...Out. ...In. ...Out. ARE WE DONE YET?!
  • Ryoma: What's wrong?! Why are you shouting?
  • Rinkah: This is hard!
  • Ryoma: It takes time to master the art of meditation. You must start slowly. Over time, you can work up to longer sessions. I meditate for two hours a day!
  • Rinkah: What are you? Some kind of hermit?!
  • Ryoma: Hardly! I'm sure you'll do just as well once you get the hang of it.
  • Rinkah: I'll take your word for it.
  • Ryoma: Let's stop for today. How about we try again later?
  • Rinkah: That sounds good. I'll need all the help I can get!

A Support

  • Ryoma: Rinkah, I'm impressed. Your meditation skills have really improved!
  • Rinkah: *shrug* Piece of cake.
  • Ryoma: Haha! Now the trick is to channel that focus during battle so you can stay calm!
  • Rinkah: Right. I will feel the fire, but I won't let it consume me anymore.
  • Ryoma: Good.
  • Rinkah: Well, it's thank to you, Ryoma. I never thought I'd be getting help from a prince! And I never thought I'd take meditation lessons from a hermit either!
  • Ryoma: It was my pleasure. It's good for hermits to spend time together.
  • Rinkah: What?! Who are you calling a hermit?
  • Ryoma: Well, you're the one who wanted to keep her tribe isolated from everyone. If that's not hermit-like. I don't know what is!
  • Rinkah: Haha! I guess you have a point.
  • Ryoma: The important thing is, we were able to break down some of the walls between us.
  • Rinkah: I can't belive I'm saying this, but I'm glad.
  • Ryoma: Me too. I know you're a very dignified, independent person. I respect that.
  • Rinkah: Thank you.
  • Ryoma: I hope we can strengthen the bonds between Hoshido and the Flame Tribe.
  • Rinkah: Absolutely! You've shown me how to pursue peace not just on the battlefield but within. You have my loyalty. My strength is yours!
  • Ryoma: Good. Let us continue fighting side by side.

  • Rinkah: You apologize far too much! Do you know that?
  • Ryoma: Well, I should be saying, "Thank you."
  • Rinkah: What for?
  • Ryoma: Now that you've started meditating, you seem more at ease.
  • Ryoma: I've even caught you smiling a few times.
  • Rinkah: Never!
  • Ryoma: Haha! Relax. I'm sure I'm the only person who saw it.
  • Ryoma: You're much easier to approach now, and I'm grateful.
  • Rinkah: Grateful?!
  • Ryoma: I wanted to get close to you, but I was afraid. Imagine that! Prince Ryoma afraid!
  • Ryoma: Now that you're so much calmer, I feel I can finally ask you-
  • Rinkah: Whoa! Stop right there!
  • Ryoma: I'm sure you would prefer a man from the Flame Tribe as your partner...
  • Ryoma: ...But I can't lie to someone I am fighting next to in battle. Rinkah, I love you.
  • Rinkah: You too?
  • Ryoma: What do you mean?! You too?
  • Rinkah: How dare you profess your feelings like that! Hmph!
  • Rymoa: Now stay calm, Rinkah. Remember what we practiced. In! Out! In! Out!
  • Ryoma: I didn't mean to offend you!
  • Rinkah: I can't believe you'd say something like that! I'm the one in love with you!
  • Ryoma: Really?! But this is amazing! We both feel the same way!
  • Rinkah: Yes, we do!
  • Ryoma: Oh, Rinkah. I promise to stay by your side forever!

  • Takumi: I think you have this backward. You're the one picking a fight with me! I was hoping we could speak as allies, but with an attitude like that, I've gotta ask... Does the Flame Tribe take this alliance seriously?
  • Rinkah: You'd have to ask my father about that. I do whatever the chief commands. It's not like I get to decide our policies!
  • Takumi: So you're saying if it was up to you, the alliance would be off?
  • Rinkah: Well, not exactly...
  • Takumi: Now you're dodging the question!
  • Rinkah: My father has decided to cooperate with Hoshido. I am sworn to obey him. In the old days, the Flame Tribe was always independent. We didn't make compromises!
  • Takumi: That can't have been too long ago if you still remember.
  • Rinkah: I'll never forget the history of my tribe! We have always decided our own fate!

  • Rinkah: Yeah, but why are you helping me?
  • Takumi: Consider it a thank-you present.

  • Takumi: Can I have a little bite this time? Please?
  • Rinkah: OK. Just this once.
  • Takumi: You know, we make a good team. We should hunt together sometime.

  • Takumi: It's no big deal... Besides, I wouldn't give up these hunting sessions for anything.
  • Rinkah: Huh? What was that last part? You were mumbling.
  • Takumi: It was nothing. *ahem* Rinkah, I wanted to show you something.
  • Rinkah: Is that a red jewel?! Those belong to the Flame Tribe! How did you get one?
  • Takumi: This was given to the Hoshidan king by your tribe as a sign of friendship. It was passed down to me by my mother. I'd like for you to have it.
  • Rinkah: I've never heard of these jewels leaving the tribe before!
  • Takumi: My mother told me to hand this over to the woman I fell in love with.
  • Rinkah: No! She didn't!
  • Takumi: Why do you look so angry? I thought you'd be pleased! This jewel is precious to you. What better way to ask for your hand in marriage?
  • Rinkah: WHAT?! You can't be serious!
  • Takumi: But I am! You are fierce and beautiful. I'm in love with you.
  • Rinkah: I'm sorry. I think I'm in shock. I never thought an outsider could understand me the way you do. I accept this jewel as a token of friendship between Hoshido and the Flame Tribe.
  • Takumi: Is that all?
  • Rinkah: I wasn't finished! I will also accept it as proof of our love for each other. I swear on this jewel that I will never leave your side.

  • Rinkah: You're letting your temper run you. Even if you're right, can you be sure we wouldn't have lost anyone?
  • Saizo: A few casualties would have been work the blow struck to the enemy. That encounter will have consequences for the rest of the war!
  • Rinkah: ... Hmph. In the Flame Tribe, our war parties were so small that losing anyone was unthinkable.
  • Saizo: And?
  • Rinkah: Our elders taught us the importance of reading the situation. There's virtue in retreat, if it means a single life can be saved.
  • Saizo: Ridiculous. Cowardice is no virtue. The Flame Tribe... It sounds to me like their embers have grown cold. I have no desire to stay and listen to your justifications.

  • Rinkah: Yeah?
  • Saizo: If Lord Ryoma had been there, I'm sure he would have done the same.
  • Rinkah: It's all right. I wasn't taking it personally. I'm a warrior, so I know how you felt. I get lost in the heat of battle sometimes too. Victory can be a real rush.
  • Saizo: Really? That's surprising.
  • Rinkah: Oh, yeah. I used to charge in alone like an idiot and take a beating for my trouble. I'd always get an earful from the chief over it...
  • Saizo: So you're saying I'm no better than you were back then.
  • Rinkah: That's not what I meant. It's just that you have to think about what your goals are. Maybe sometimes it's worth losing people. It really depends. That's what I meant by learning to read a situation.
  • Saizo: So that's the way of the Flame Tribe. Hm...it's a valuable lesson.

  • Rinkah: Saizo, do you have a minute to talk?

  • Saizo: The main reason was to avenge my father. But apart from that...it was exhilarating to use those techniques to claim victory in battle. That may be why I came to enjoy fighting so much.
  • Rinkah: That all sounds pretty familiar. And I think it's important for a warrior. We can't forget that feeling.
  • Saizo: Yes. A sword that is not kept sharp cannot cut when it is needed.
  • Rinkah: Though if you put it to the grindstone too long, the blade will break.
  • Saizo: ...
  • Rinkah: But for now, anyway, I feel like my skills could use some sharpening. How about it, Saizo? Want a friendly match with me?
  • Saizo: ...I was just thinking of asking you the same thing.
  • Rinkah: I should warn you, my blade was tempered in the forges of the Flame Tribe. Warriors don't burn hotter than me!

  • Rinkah: It's our warrior blood. I bet under that mask, you were smiling during the fight. Heh, what do you think the softies on our team would think if they heard us?
  • Saizo: Haha...I shudder to think. But I must redevote myself to my training for Lord Ryoma's sake.
  • Rinkah: I ought to do the same, if the Flame Tribe's going to have any future. You know...we really have a lot in common, Saizo. You ever think about us? Together?
  • Saizo: Now that you mention it...
  • Rinkah: Haha. I should have guessed. But I'm glad I'm not the only one it occurred to.

  • Rinkah: Haha...it's like you're reading my mind.
  • Saizo: It does seem uncanny.
  • Rinkah: It's obvious we're meant for each other. I wouldn't have guessed when we first met, but...

  • Kagero: Hello there, Rinkah. Have you heard the rumors about the latest camp interest?
  • Rinkah: What rumors, Kagero?
  • Kagero: Apparently, the entire camp is trying to determine who the strongest fighters are. There are no clear winners among the men, the women, or both combined.
  • Rinkah: Hmph. I don't distract myself with idle gossip.
  • Kagero: Oh? Even though word is you and I are top candidates?
  • Rinkah: We are? Very well. Tell me more.
  • Kagero: They say that you and I both possess incredible strength. That you are powerful while I am tactical. There is some intense disagreement as to which of us is the strongest fighter.
  • Rinkah: Hrm. Normally I dislike people talking about me behind my back, but... I must admit, it's nice to have my strength praised after working so hard in training.
  • Kagero: I feel the same way. I dislike gossip, but having my skills acknowledged is a pleasant feeling.
  • Rinkah: Hmmm. What do you think of going a few rounds, Kagero?
  • Kagero: You mean...to determine who the superior fighter actually is?
  • Rinkah: Exactly.
  • Kagero: I cannot say that I personally oppose the idea... However, I serve Lord Ryoma. I cannot risk getting seriously injured. To do so and be unable to serve would be a grievous betrayal.
  • Rinkah: Then...perhaps we could do so with a friendly sumo match instead?
  • Kagero: I've heard of it, but remind me how sumo works...
  • Rinkah: There is no armor and no weapons. It's a test of pure skill and strength. A fighter tried to push her opponent either out of a ring or to the ground.
  • Kagero: Interesting... Very well—I accept your challenge. Since you selected the sport, I'll select the place and time. I'll let you know.
  • Rinkah: Excellent. I look forward to showing you what I'm made of!

B Support

  • Kagero: Rinkah, I wanted to talk about our sumo match the other day...
  • Rinkah: Ugh, why did you mention it. Just remembering it gets my teeth grinding. How was it that we could be so perfectly matched that neither of us could win? And the chaos that resulted from it being declared a tie...
  • Kagero: How did all of those people even hear about our match?
  • Rinkah: Someone must have followed one or both of us. That's the only way they could know. And they were so loud. You'd think it was an exhibition match with how people acted. I'm pretty sure I even saw someone selling snacks to the people watching.
  • Kagero: I suspect all of those distractions made it impossible for you to concentrate... I know I was unable to. Of course, considering how highly they'd evaluated us, their excitement makes sense.
  • Rinkah: That's true... It was a good match until about halfway through, in any case. It's been a long time since I've had such a good sumo match, to be honest.
  • Kagero: Is it a sport the Fire Tribe plays often?
  • Rinkah: It is, though usually it is restricted to just the men of the tribe. Occasionally I was able to compete in a match or two, though.
  • Kagero: Really? You seem like you're quite capable. Why would they limit your time in the ring?
  • Rinkah: Because I was so capable; I kept absolutely destroying my opponents. I only got to fight when someone thought they could defeat me. As soon as I proved them wrong, they refused any extra matches. Bunch of wimps.
  • Kagero: Hah. So what you were missing was a true challenge.
  • Rinkah: Exactly. That's why I'm happy that we're able to compete against each other.
  • Kagero: I'm honored. Let's continue to challenge each other and push our limits.

  • Kagero: You know, we've been having sumo matches for some time now. I can tell that I've grown physically stronger as a result.
  • Rinkah: I've had allies mention that my skills on the battlefield appear to have improved, too.
  • Kagero: It seems our matches have greatly benefited both of us...
  • Rinkah: It's funny that our matches began as a way to see who was stronger...yet they resulted in both of us growing even more powerful!
  • Kagero: I can't complain about the results. Although it means that the crowds that gather remain unsatisfied.
  • Rinkah: I don't care about them! Plus, I think their desire to see a deciding battle just drives both of us to improve. I know I don't want to be on the losing side of things!
  • Kagero: Nor I. Another match, then?

  • Rinkah: Wait a second. That sounds like you're just describing yourself.
  • Azama: Which aspect of my character are you referring to exactly?
  • Rinkah: Umm, all of it? Like I said, you're just talking about yourself!

  • Azama: Haha, you have a funny way of showing it. Usually your allies don't call you names and make baseless accusations. You should at least be able to trade me something if you want my help
  • Rinkah: Yeah, I don't feel like doing that though. Just hurry up and help me already.
  • Azama: I don't think I could possibly have less motivation to do that. Honestly, even talking to you is making me wish I had a different vocation.
  • Rinkah: Well fine. Maybe I'll just spit on my cut and hope it heals all on its own!
  • Azama: Hahaha, good luck with that.

B Support

  • Rinkah: Hey! Heretic!
  • Azama: You again. Didn't I tell you already that i've never broken any religious commandments?
  • Rinkah: Oh please. I know a heretic when I see one. I've even got proof.
  • Azama: Huh? What are you talking about?
  • Rinkah: You're supposed to be a monk, right? But deep down, you don't believe in the gods. Someone told me that you once said, "all religion is nonsense." Is that true?
  • Azama: Hmm. I suppose I did say that. It was a long time ago.
  • Rinkah: Hold on a second. You're not even going to deny that you said it? How in the world does that not shatter your religious vows?
  • Azama: Faith is a very fluid thing. It can take on many different forms. I'm just the kind of person who points out whatever I find silly. It may be gods or kings. There's no real distinction for me.
  • Rinkah: Then why are you a monk? That makes no sense at all.
  • Azama: I fell into it naturally. My family ran a small shrine when I was growing up. The lifestly suits me well.
  • Rinkah: That's pathetic. Shouldn't you be driven toward a religious calling? I have to assume that youd on't believe in the God of the Flame. Our tribe worships him above every other deity.
  • Azama: God of the Flame? Oh, you're talkinga bout the ancient dragon that folks pray to. I have a passing knowledge of that god, but honestly it doesn't intrigue me much.
  • Rinkah: I'll make you intrigued, damn it! Sit down—I want to tell you all about how incredible our god is! We worship him for a reason, obviously.
  • Azama: I think I'll pass. You can talk all you want, but it will probably just put me to sleep.
  • Rinkah: Wait a minute. Just listen to what I have to say, Azama!
  • Azama: Ugh, you're giving me a headache.

A Support

  • Rinkah: Hello, heretic.
  • Azama: It's not very nice to go around calling people names. But I know you're too stubborn to change.
  • Rinkah: Maybe you weren't meant to be a monk. Have you ever thought about seeking out a new vocation?
  • Azama: Sure, form time to time.
  • Rinkah: You clearly don't believe in the gods, so why not explore other options?
  • Azama: I may not have as much faith as some, but I have a gift for helping people. i can make them feel enthralled and hopeful whenever I choose.
  • Rinkah: That's not a good reason to keep being a monk, Azama. How can you toy with people like that? You're a total fraud.
  • Azama: You don't understand what it takes to become a monk. I spent years enduring strenuous training in the mountains. After all of my experiences, good and bad, I can't help but have complicated feelings. It's almost like I have a bit of a chip on my shoulder for bearing so much hardship.
  • Rinkah: That's crazy. Your motives are all over the place, Azama.
  • Azama: I just want to enjoy living my life. That's all that matters to me.
  • Rinkah: *sigh* Well, in spite of your strange attitude, people seem to benefit from what you do. And you're clearly dedicated to the training required of your vocation. Maybe you're not such a bad guy after all.
  • Azama: What's that? Did you say something?
  • Rinkah: Never mind, it's nothing. Say, you mentioned your experience training in the mountains. Have you ever visited the sacred mountains that honor the God of the Flame?
  • Azama: Of course. I know them well.
  • Rinkah: You have to take me on a pilgrimage there! If you do, I promise I'll never call you a heretic ever again.
  • Azama: I don't know. That seems like toom uch of a bother to me.
  • Rinkah: Stop complaining! What if I give you a nice present? Will you take me then?
  • Azama: What is that supposed to mean? I'm not a child. You can't pay me off with a toy. But, OK, fine... If I head in that direction, maybe I'll take you.
  • Rinkah: Yes! You promised! Oh, I just can't wait to see the mountains, Azama!
  • Azama: Hey, wait a second. I didn't promise you anything.

S Support

  • Azama: Rinkah, can you talk for a minute?
  • Rinkah: Sure, Azama. Say, is that a map?
  • Azama: Yes, it details the nearby mountain ranges. There are some that even honor your precious God of the Flame. Would you like to join me on a pilgrimage there sometime?
  • Rinkah: Of course! That's so exciting. We should head out right away.
  • Azama: I'd like to be your guide, if that's OK.
  • Rinkah: That would be a huge help. But why has your attitude about helping me changed? You're being so cooperative. I can't help but feel suspicious.
  • Azama: That's a fair point. The truth is, I just love going on journeys to holy places. And maybe it would be fun to spend some time getting to know you better.
  • Rinkah: What do you mean by that?
  • Azama: I have to admit. I enjoyed fending off your verbal jabs. And it's a lot of fun irritating you. Ever since you suggested it, I realized that traveling with you sounded wonderful. Maybe you'll finally want to sing my praises once we get to the mountain.
  • Rinkah: You're a very confusing fellow, Azama.
  • Azama: Rinkah, I'm trying to say that I like you.
  • Rinkah: Wh-what?! Your logic is completely insane! How could you possibly think that? We've been fighting like cats and dogs!
  • Azama: Hahaha. Your face is all flushed, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: Hey, shut up! Yours is too!
  • Azama: Maybe I shouldn't have expressed myself in such a complicated way. I was just feeling shy and nervous about putting my feelings out there, I guess.
  • Rinkah: No, I understand. Honestly, I'm pretty fond of you too. I think that's why I like to try and wind you up all the time. But if you wanna be with me, you'd better study up on the God of the Flame. That's an important part of bonding with someone from my tribe!
  • Azama: Hahaha. I think I can handle that.

  • Rinkah: Hrm.
  • Hinata: Oh, Rinkah, did you need something?
  • Rinkah: No, I'm alright.
  • Hinata: But...you were watching me, weren't you?
  • Rinkah: Not you, no. I was examining your fighting style. The way you wield your katana...
  • Hinata: Oh yeah; it's pretty amazing, isn't it?
  • Rinkah: What's amazing is how you're still alive if that's your actual fighting style.
  • Hinata: Is that...a compliment? I can't be sure.
  • Rinkah: You may take it however you like.
  • Hinata: Awesome! then thank you! It's always great to hear nice things.
  • Rinkah: Nothing really brings you down, huh...?
  • Hinata:Not if I can help it. Hey, got time to go a few rounds?
  • Rinkah: Excuse me?
  • Hinata: You're curious about my fighting style, yeah? I'd be happy to cross blades with you and show you how it works.
  • Rinkah: I'd...rather not involve myself with you any more than is needed.
  • Hinata: Pfft, and here I thought I'd found a good sparring partner.
  • Rinkah: Hrm. In that case, I accept your challenge!
  • Hinata: Wait, what?! I don't understand... You Flame Tribe people are a confusing bunch... But if you really do accept, then I am ready for you anytime!
  • Rinkah: How about now? The sooner I beat you to a pulp, the sooner I can be on my way.
  • Hinata: Hah, let's find out if you're all talk. Here I come!
  • Rinkah: Bring it on!

B Support

  • Hinata: Phew... You're pretty quick, Rinkah. Training with you is exhausting. I can tell you put some serious effort into your training.
  • Rinkah: I could feel the power behind your blows, as well. It was... unexpected. I'm certain your blows would have no trouble shattering the strongest armor.
  • Hinata: Is that why you were careful to parry them, rather than meet them head-on? Speaking of which, did you memorize my moves so you could counter them?
  • Rinkah: Don't say it like that. I was just intrigued by your style. If I picked up a few tricks... All I'll say is, your style is rare to me, so I studied you as you practiced.
  • Hinata: Rare? I don't think so, I know several fighters who fight the same way.
  • Rinkah: It may be common within Hoshido, but I've never seen it used in the Flame Tribe.
  • Hinata: Oh, I see what you mean.
  • Rinkah: I've witnessed a lot of different styles, but yours makes great use of follow-up moves. If I could meld it with my own, I could definitely become stronger...
  • Hinata: That... was a compliment, right?
  • Rinkah: Again, take it however you like.
  • Hinata: Awesome! Anyway, you'd better stick with me if you want to learn more!
  • Rinkah: What? No, you're sticking with me! Let's go again. Get ready!

A Support

  • Hinata: Damn it. You managed to parry or evade all of my attacks today.
  • Rinkah: Of course; it's only natural to get used to someone you are fighting time and again.
  • Hinata: True... Also, none of your counterattacks landed, so that means... We haven't determined the better fighter!
  • Rinkah: You're right. Clearly I still haven't learned all there is to learn from you. Only your strong defense can explain me not being able to hit you.
  • Hinata: I think that we've come as far as we can, sparring against one another with swords. Next time, let's spar with your best weapon, OK?
  • Rinkah: Are you serious?
  • Hinata: Of course! You're best with a club, right? Our next battle will be with clubs!
  • Rinkah: If you insist... But you aren't allowed to blame the weapon choice when you lose.
  • Hinata: Hah, I'd never!
  • Rinkah: And I won't be responsible if you get hurt.
  • Hinata: I'm not worried about that. Our sparring matches are actually a ton of fun!
  • Rinkah: What? You're having fun?
  • Hinata: Of course. There's a limit to how strong I can get just training alone. Practicing with you is great experience, so I'm really enjoying this chance to learn. I feel like I can get a whole lot stronger by doing this!
  • Rinkah: Interesting... I think we are both on the same page, actually. We're driving one another to grow.
  • Hinata: Yeah! So don't you dare hold back!
  • Rinkah: Same to you!

S Support

  • Hinata: Hello, Rinkah. I wanted to ask you something, if you've got a moment...
  • Rinkah: Oh, Hinata. You're acting very formal today. What do you need? I'm ready for another match if you are!
  • Hinata: Oh, n-no. That's not why I'm here. I actually wanted to ask... Can I go with you next time you go to the Flame Tribe?
  • Rinkah: What are you talking about? You don't seriously want to challenge the Flame Tribe to sparring matches, do you?
  • Hinata: No, no! That's not it at all! The last thing I want to talk about today is sparring. I wanted to visti so I could introduce myself to them is all.
  • Rinkah: Why would you want to introduce yourself?
  • Hinata: It seems only right that I meet the people who raised the woman I care for...
  • Rinkah: Hang on, what? What are you trying to say?
  • Hinata: I'm saying that, as we've practiced and been around each other... I've grown to like you. A lot. You're strong and cool and amazing. RInkah... Do you feel the same about me? Do you want to be with me?
  • Rinkah: I... *sigh* I can't believe you asked if you could visit my village before telling me how you feel.
  • Hinata: I just got the order of things mixed up! It doesn't change how I feel! But I need to know—do you feel the same way about me?
  • Rinkah: Yes, Hinata. Of course. Ever since I saw that burning drive in your eyes...
  • Hinata: Hah, I knew it! I could feel the way you were looking at me!
  • Rinkah: What?! I wasn't looking at you in any special way.
  • Hinata: Nah, I could feel it. You definitely were. I don't want you to stop, though. Keep looking at me like that forever!
  • Rinkah: Hrmph. I suppose I can't say no to that...

  • Rinkah: Oboro? Is that you? What's with the thousand-yard stare? Oh! Right! You're on cleanup duty after meals. Sorry, I'll get out of your way.
  • Oboro: Rinkah! Wait.
  • Rinkah: Wh-what's up?
  • Oboro: The way you eat...especially the mess you leave behind...it's a lot to clean up. Could you try to start eating more carefully?
  • Rinkah: Carefully? Like how?
  • Oboro: Like, don't spray the meat's juices all over the tablecloth! Or leave chunks of food on the floor!
  • Rinkah: Hmph. Maybe that's not how YOU eat. But the Flame Tribe always digs into their meals with both hands! We wolf our food down like actual wolves! Someone told me once I should use utensils when eating with you people...but I assumed they were joking.
  • Oboro: Huh...so table manners are different where you come from? Well, be a messy eater if you want, but I'm the one who has to clean it up. So like it or not, I'm going to teach you the basics of eating with utensils.
  • Rinkah: What, you're serious? That's going too far...
  • Oboro: Then can you eat without making such an ungodly mess?
  • Rinkah: Impossible. It goes against everything I stand for.
  • Oboro: This isn't the Fire Tribe village, Rinkah! You're supposed to abide by the customs of your land, right? Don't worry - I'll teach you everything there is to know. You'll catch on quick.
  • Rinkah: Or you could just let me eat in peace...

B Support

  • Oboro: That’s it. Don’t hold it in your fist like it's a sword. You need to grip it between your fingers instead. That helps give you finer control.
  • Rinkah: Urg…
  • Oboro: don’t hold it so tight. Let it move in your hand along with your fingers.
  • Rinkah: I just…can't…get it…! Oops. It broke.
  • Oboro: again?! This is the fifth time…
  • Rinkah: I keep telling you, this is a waste of time!
  • Oboro: Not at all! There’s lots of reasons to stick with it. You can eat anything—even fish, I know you love fish—without leaving a mess!
  • Rinkah: Why would I not just bite into the fish? That way, I can spit out the bones later. Or heck, just eat them too!
  • Oboro: Yeah, see…that’s a good way to guarantee a mess. But if you ate it clean, you'd get ALL the meat on those bones.
  • Rinkah: Hmm?
  • Oboro: You’ve been leaving prime meat behind! Your horrible table manners mean you're not getting all the fish on your plate. Doesn’t it frustrate you to waste food?
  • Rinkah: I…I'm wasting food? Ugh, I guess you're right. I hate to admit it, but…
  • Oboro: There’s still a plate of cooked fish left from tonight’s dinner. Why don’t you watch me to see how you do it?
  • Rinkah: S-sure…
  • (scene transition)
  • Rinkah: Wow! How'd you do that?! There's nothing but bones and skin left! I've never seen anything so clean… It's like art, the way you eat!
  • Oboro: That’s the kind of thing you can do with utensils. You get all the meat, while leaving the plate and tablecloth clean of bones.
  • Rinkah: You're really starting to sell me on this. Show me again!
  • Oboro: I would love to.

A Support

  • Rinkah: Check it out, Oboro! Nothing but skin and bones left! And see how there’s not a single stain on the tablecloth?
  • Oboro: Way to go, Rinkah! I take it you’ve got the hang of utensils?
  • Rinkah: Yep. And I have you to thank.
  • Oboro: Hey, I shouldn’t take all the credit. You worked hard to learn.
  • Rinkah: You know, it's weird. Eating without wasting food is satisfying in a different way than stuffing yourself.
  • Oboro: *nod*Doing it that way shows your respect for the cook and the gifts of the land. That’s what I think, at least.
  • Rinkah: So that’s the Hoshidan philosophy, huh? Interesting. I’d like to understand your mind-set better and not be so closed off.
  • Oboro: That’s the spirit! The better we get to know each other, the less distance there’ll be between us.
  • Rinkah: Yeah. Hey, I should teach you how we eat in the Flame Tribe someday! Though it’ll be too messy here. Maybe we should take a hunting trip to the mountains.
  • Oboro: I bet that would be fun. Thanks!
  • Rinkah: Wait’ll you join in a traditional Flame Tribe feast! We sink our teeth into our kill and spray it's juices in appreciation for it's life.
  • Oboro: Hmm…I'll be sure to pack some old clothes for the occasion!
  • Rinkah: Smart thinking! You'll love it!

  • Rinkah: Good afternoon, Subaki.
  • Subaki: Hello, Rinkah. Did you need something?
  • Rinkah: I've been wanting to talk to you about the recent battle. I can't get it out of my head.
  • Subaki: Oh? Why's that?
  • Rinkah: After our enemies began to retreat, you pushed on and pursued them. You kept going quite a distance.
  • Subaki: I didn't chase them that far...
  • Rinkah: No, you did. Even if we attempted to follow, it would have taken a great deal of time to catch up.
  • Subaki: Hmm... Perhaps that's true. It's hard to recall in hindsight.
  • Rinkah: It seemed unnecessarily dangerous, don't you think? What would you have done if a band of archers had been waiting to ambush you?
  • Subaki: I took precautions before giving chase, Rinkah. It wasn't a reckless pursuit.
  • Rinkah: You left yourself open for attack. Even warriors as skilled as yourself could be felled by a stray arrow.
  • Subaki: I strive for perfection in all things. There is no way I would overlook something so crucial. Please, don't concern yourself with my well-being. My tactics are beyond reproach.
  • Rinkah: Heh. How absurd. You court danger at every possible turn. But what do I care? Just do as you please!
  • Subaki: Well that was unexpected. I wonder why she got so upset. I suppose she was simply trying to look out for me. Perhaps I should try and apologize...

B Support

  • Subaki: There you are, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: Oh,Subaki. What brings you here?
  • Subaki: Well, I was thinking about our conversation the other day. I owe you an apology. All you did was express for my well being. I'm sorry I brushed you off.
  • Rinkah: No, it's all right. I behaved foolishly. Who am I to question your tactics?
  • Subaki: What I meant to say was that my view from the sky gives me an advantage. It's harder to overlook important details on the battlefield.
  • Rinkah: You can survey from the ground too, if you pay keen attention.
  • Subaki: Th-that's true. Tell me, have I upset you once again?
  • Rinkah: No, I'm not angry.
  • Subaki: That's a relief to hear. Making sensible judgement is difficult when the right words escape you. I need to take greater caution when I'm conversing with you, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: Oh, I see... You think I'm short tempered! What kind of pathetic excuse is that for an apology, Subaki?!
  • Subaki: Wait, Rinkah! Come back! Why did I open my big mouth again?

A Support

  • Rinkah: Oh, Subaki.
  • Subaki: Rinkah... I'm sorry about before. I never meant to raise your ire.
  • Rinkah: I see you beat me to the punch, Subaki.
  • Subaki: Huh? That do you mean?
  • Rinkah: You're the one who deserves an apology. That's why I've been looking for you. My temper got the better of me, I'm sorry.
  • Subaki: Honestly, I understand why you got angry. I should have chosen my words with greater care.
  • Rinkah: That's not it... The truth of the matter is, that's just a touchy subject for me. I can be very temperamental. Sometimes, it can be challenging for me to make a calm judgement. For whatever reason, I've never been able to change that aspect of my personality. It's ridiculous for me to question others' opinions.
  • Subaki: I disagree. I've been doing a bit of reflection as well. This is hard for me to discuss... But I always aim for excellence in every pursuit. So to have my tactics brought into question made me flustered. I'm sorry.
  • Rinkah: Why don't we just call it even then?
  • Subaki: That sounds good. If you want to talk with me later, feel free.
  • Rinkah: Will do!

S Support

  • Subaki: Rinkah, I've been looking all over for you. Can we speak?

  • Subaki: I've been thinking about our conversation the other day.
  • Rinkah: I thought we agreed to call things even. It was just a misunderstanding, right?
  • Subaki: Sure, that's true. But I think I understand why we kept quarreling.
  • Rinkah: Oh? And why is that?
  • Subaki: I realized that...I like you.
  • Rinkah: Oh, you like me. I see. Wait... WH-WHAT?
  • Subaki: Is it that surprising? Did I catch you off guard?
  • Rinkah: Are you serious? I'm shocked! But what do you mean exactly...?
  • Subaki: I have feelings for you. Serious feelings.
  • Rinkah: And how exactly did you arrive at that conclusion?
  • Subaki: I finally got why I always put my foot in my mouth around you. I want to say the perfect thing to try and sound impressive. But by doing that, I'm not really being true to myself. That's why I keep making you mad. What do you think, Rinkah?
  • Rinkah: What do you mean?
  • Subaki: Do you dislike me? I would understand if that's the case.
  • Rinkah: No, it's not that... In retrospect, I'm the one who brought up your bold battle style. Your obsession with perfection is maddening... But I think I may have liked you too, ever since we first spoke.
  • Subaki: So you mean...
  • Rinkah: We both seem to feel the same way.
  • Subaki: That's wonderful. You and I will be the perfect married couple, don't you think?
  • Rinkah: Wow, what? Why do we have to talk about getting married already? All I said was that I liked you!
  • Subaki: Well, it just seems like the obvious next step, right?
  • Rinkah: Maybe someday. But I woudn't go so far as to say it's the next step though.
  • Subaki: Oh, you don't like the idea?
  • Rinkah: I never said that! There's just no reason to rush anything.
  • Subaki: You're probably right, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: Regardless of what happens in the future, know that my feelings are true.
  • Subaki: Nothing could make me happier. I want to spend all my days with you. I'll take care of you, no matter what. I promise.
  • Rinkah: I'll take care of you too.

  • Hayato: Huh? N-no, of course not. I was just debating how best to eat them.
  • Rinkah: How to eat them? What's wrong with them the way they are? I'm sure they're plenty flavorful. Do you dislike them?
  • Hayato: Honestly, they're way too bitter. I can't stand to eat them.
  • Rinkah: Huh. That's it? Why are you acting like a big baby?
  • Hayato: Hey! Don't say that! I'm not a baby!
  • Rinkah: You realise we're at war right? Every single resource is incredibly precious. How dare you waste food like that!

  • Rinkah: This is ridiculous. Have you ever tried to get over your pickiness before? You might want to think about it.
  • Hayato: I wish that were possible. You're the only one who knows about my secret. Won't you help?
  • Rinkah: Usually I try not to mingle with the rest of folks in the army. But I suppose I can make an exception for you, Hayato. So why do you dislike vegetables so much?
  • Hayato: I told you. They're too bitter. I always end up gagging when I try to eat them.
  • Rinkah: Hahahah!
  • Hayato: Why are you laughing at me? I thought you were going to help?
  • Rinkah: I can't help myself---you're just too funny. Ahahahaha!
  • Hayato: Well why do you think I've been trying to hide my feelings? I hate being laughed at.
  • Rinkah: If you really can't stand the taste, why not try to obscure it? For example, have you tried holding your nose while eating?
  • Hayato: No, why would I do that?
  • Rinkah: You can't taste as well if you can't smell what you're eating. That's probably the first thing to try.
  • Hayato: What?! Are you crazy? That would never work for me.
  • Rinkah: Hayato, grow up! Quit complaining and just eat the vegetables! Here!
  • Hayato: Mmmmpf!! Mmmghfff! *gulp *gulp* gulp*
  • Rinkah: So? What do you think? Can you taste the bitterness?
  • Hayato: *gasp* *cough* *hack* Ugh, that didn't work at all!
  • Rinkah: But you just swallowed them whole!
  • Hayato: You didn't tell me that I had to chew!
  • Rinkah: Why woudn't you? Fine, I'll try and think up something else... Wait, that's it!
  • Hayato: Wh-what is it, Rinkah?
  • Rinkah: I know just what to do! I'll figure out a way to use them in a recipe.
  • Hayato: A recipe? You're going to cook them?
  • Rinkah: Listen, just give me a day to gather supplies. I think I know just what to do.
  • Hayato: If you say so...

A Support

  • Hayato: I'm here, Rinkah! So what exactly do you have planned?
  • Rinkah: I made a delicious boiled dish from the veggies you can't stand. I know you'll stop being so picky after you try it out. I used a special spice that should cover up the flavor that bothers you.
  • Hayato: Which spice exactly?
  • Rinkah: It's a traditional one that's been passed down within the Fire Tribe. The unique zest will totally erase the bitterness you were complaining about. it instantly make any meal taste 10 times more flavorful.
  • Hayato: Huh, that explains your cooking.
  • Rinkah: Be quiet! Now quit whining and try the food.
  • Hayato: O-OK... *munch munch* ... Wow!
  • Rinkah: What do you think?
  • Hayato: This is delicious! I can't taste any of the bitterness at all! It's like I'm eating something totally different!
  • Rinkah: Didn't I tell you?
  • Hayato: I really like these now. Clearly this secret spice is no joke.
  • Rinkah: I'll let you in on a secret. This spice helped me get over my own pickiness at one point. That's how I knew it would work!
  • Hayato: What? Are you serious?
  • Rinkah: It's the truth. All you have to do is slowly cut back on the amount of spice you use. Then, you'll get used to the others flavors and you won't mind eating them. Here, why don't you take this spice pouch.
  • Hayato: Rinkah, you're actually pretty nice. I think I got the wrong impression at first...
  • Rinkah: Is that so?
  • Hayato: Before, you seemed a little standoffish. I didn't know how to talk to you. But now I actually feel like we're friends.
  • Rinkah: We may come from different tribes, but I'm glad we got to know each other. I didn't mean to be cruel before. I just can't stand it when people waste food.
  • Hayato: That explains your actions... Listen, would you mind helping me out with something else?
  • Rinkah: What do you need?
  • Hayato: There are still a ton of foods I still can't stand to eat.
  • Rinkah: Wh-what?! Are you serious?
  • Hayato: Please, you're the only one who can help me!
  • Rinkah: Ugh, no way! Figure it out yourself.

S Support

  • Hayato: *munch munch* Everything tastes so much better when it's seasoned with this spice.
  • Rinkah: How many more meals am I going to have to make for you? You have the spice. Why don't you learn to cook food on your own already?
  • Hayato: I still need help though! You're the one with the magic touch. I would just ruin the food.
  • Rinkah: That's ridiculous, Hayato. You never even really tried.
  • Hayato: Am I just a nuisance?
  • Rinkah: No. I'm the one who decided to help you. It's not your fault.
  • Hayato: Rinkah, I have to ask you something...
  • Rinkah: Wait, why are you acting so serious all of a sudden?
  • Hayato: I've just been thinking how much I enjoy eating meals with you every day. I don't want that to stop...
  • Rinkah: What do you mean?
  • Hayato: Now that I understand how kind and generous you are, I've realized something. While you were yelling at me for being picky, I was falling for you.
  • Rinkah: Hayato, are you saying...
  • Hayato: I really like you, Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: I like you too... I just didn't want to say anything.
  • Hayato: What?! Do you mean it?
  • Rinkah: I thought your pickiness was a bit ridiculous at first. But the more I got to know you, the more that I realized I was totally wrong. You were willing to try something new, even though you didn't want to. I really like that about you. I just have one small request.
  • Hayato: Anything! Whatever you want!
  • Rinkah: You really have to learn how to cook. I'm not doing all the work.
  • Hayato: It's a deal! Thank you, Rinkah. I'm so excited to spend more time with you.
  • Rinkah: Same here. We'll have to keep working on ways to help you get over your pickiness.
  • Hayato: Please, take it easy on me! Remember, you used to be picky too!

  • Rinkah: Back off! I'm fine. Don't you start actint all chummy with me.
  • Kaden: Aww, don't be like that! I've never really met anyone from the Flame Tribe before, so I'm curious. You're not from Nohr or Hoshido, so you must have all kinds of neat stories!
  • Rinkah: Maybe so. But none that I plan on sharing. Now scram.
  • Kaden: Yeesh. I don't think I've ever met a grumpy-pants with pants as grumpy as yours.
  • Rinkah: Hmph. Whatever.
  • Kaden: Oh! I know what will cheer you up! Here!
  • Rinkah: Is this... candy? I don't want this.
  • Kaden: Yup! Call it and offering of friendship! I hope you like it. Well, anyways, I'll just be off now. Have the best day ever, Rinkah!
  • Rinkah: Hey! Wait a minute! I just said I didn't—

(Kaden leaves)

  • Rinkah: Dammit! He's gone. Ugh. What am I supposed to do with this candy?

B Support

  • Rinkah: Kaden!

  • Rinkah: There's something I wanted to ask you. Why did you give me that candy? I thought I made it abundantly clear I don'y want to be your friend.
  • Kaden: Oh, yeah! The candy! How was it, by the way? Was it good?
  • Rinkah: What? Yeah, sure, it was fine.
  • Kaden: Hooray! So you DID eat it!
  • Rinkah: D-don't try and change the subject!
  • Kaden: Oh, right. Your question. Um, I don't know, I guess I just thought you were lonely.
  • Rinkah: You thought I was what?!
  • Kaden: You're the only one here from the Flame Tribe, right? It must be hard. You must get homesick a lot, not havind anyone else like you around.
  • Rinkah: Don't be an idiot! As if I'd get lonely over something like that. My people are not so small minded. Everywhere I go, I carry my tribe with me. And they I.
  • Kaden: Oh, really?
  • Rinkah: Yes, really! Besides... I am not without allies here.
  • Kaden: Oh, you made friends? Yippee! I'm so prond of you, Rinkah! Heehee. I bet you secretly want to be friends with everyone, don't ya? It's OK. I understand. I can totally relate! We've got a lot in common, you know. Like how I'm the only kitsune here from my village. And you're the only one here from the Flame Tribe! We're practically twins!
  • Rinkah: Those aren't the same. WE are not the same.
  • Kaden: Yeah, yeah. So you wanna hang out with me and the others sometime? I promise, you'll make lots and lots of friends!

  • Rinkah: *sigh* You just never stop, do you? But you know what? You're all right, Kaden.
  • Kaden: Aww, thanks!
  • Rinkah: How about this. If you really want to be friends, let's train together sometime. Sound good?
  • Kaden: I'd love to!
  • Rinkah: Perfect. I think you'll do just fine. I've been trying to find a moving target for a while now.
  • Kaden: T-target?! Just what kind of training is this?
  • Rinkah: Heh, it was a joke. Don't worry.
  • Kaden: Your eyes weren't joking...
  • Rinkah: That's for me to know and you to, perhaps painfully, find out.
  • Kaden: Ahh, how about we try shopping instead! It's waaaay more fun! And it involves way fewer crippling injuries! I think it'd be a great change of pace!
  • Rinkah: *sigh* You're not going to survive a war with that kind of attitude.
  • Kaden: What? But it's important to take a breather every now and then! Anyway, let me know when you're in the mood to go shopping, OK?

  • Kaden: Isn't it obvious? I love being around you!
  • Rinkah: But why?
  • Kaden: There are so many things about you that I think are amazing! Like how dignified you always look, or how you listen so intently to people. You're fierce and you've got a temper, but you care deeply for the people around you.
  • Rinkah: Kaden...
  • Kaden: In fact... I'm in love with you, Rinkah. I want to be yours.
  • Rinkah: Whaa?! Y-you!
  • Kaden: Do you love me too?

  • Orochi: I've brought a potion that will help me look into your future. Let's start.
  • Rinkah: What? Who said I want you poking around in my life?
  • Orochi: I come here offering this in friendship, and you refuse?
  • Rinkah: I don't need your help. I'm from the Flame Tribe. We divine fate our own way. We use fire—and I trust fire.
  • Orochi: Fire... to read the future?
  • Rinkah: If you must know, we drip oil onto a plate, place a strip of paper on that... and then light it up and read our fate in the shapes as it all burns. We do this to prepare for battle.
  • Orochi: Only for battle?
  • Rinkah: Only, yes. You seem surprised.
  • Orochi: Then you DO need me! I can tell your nonbattle fortunes.
  • Rinkah: Unnecessary. There's nothing worth knowing about outside of battle.
  • Orochi: There's so much life outside of battles. Fates NOT about fighting!
  • Rinkah: You heard me. I'm not interested.
  • Orochi: Wait, Rinkah! Ugh. That girl is going to get burned without my help.

  • Rinkah: So this is how you do your…magic.
  • Orochi: Intrigued, eh? I can't blame you.
  • Rinkah: Curious, that’s all. You said you can tell fortunes for events outside of battle. Like what?
  • Orochi: Just about anything—trivial as the weather, vital as health or love.
  • Rinkah: Hmm, really?
  • Orochi: I sense you want Orochi to look into something for you. About…?
  • Rinkah: None of those things.
  • Orochi: Make your request.
  • Rinkah: I want a food fortune.
  • Orochi: A food fortune.…… I guess I can do that.
  • Rinkah: Get to it then.
  • Orochi: Orochi must prepare the correct materials for this divination. Leave me. I'll tell you when I'm ready.

  • Orochi: You're not serious.
  • Rinkah: I am SO serious. I ate nothing but pickled food—fruits, vegetables, meat! Took a few days, but I feel better than ever!
  • Orochi: Glad to hear it!
  • Rinkah: I'm in the best shape of my life. I'm ready for battle! I'll take on the enemy all by myself!
  • Orochi: I'm sure you will.
  • Rinkah: I'm sorry for disrespecting your magic at first. I'll never doubt your powers again, Orochi. You're in charge of my meals from now on!
  • Orochi: Glad to serve.
  • Rinkah: Thanks for the food fortune!

(Rinkah leaves)

  • Orochi: ...... Ugh, I hope she doesn't go tell everyone about this. I just recited some recipes, that's all. I thought for sure she'd see right through it. Guess not. But one thing's for sure—my food fortune helped her. I guess I surprise even myself sometimes!

  • Rinkah: Lay off the act, and just tell me what you need.
  • Charlotte: You're all kinds of abrasive, aren't you? That's why I called you over. You're always acting so self-important. Maybe the honorable-warrior act worked where you're from, but you should stop it. Acting tough won't get you anywhere.
  • Rinkah: ...
  • Charlotte: That's a unique look you're giving me...
  • Rinkah: I understand now. You've been putting on an act all this time. This is your true self.
  • Charlotte: What of it? Everyone pretends to be something else.
  • Rinkah: There were people like you where I come from, too. They were the lowest of society, looked down on by everyone. I suppose it is lucky for you that we're here, and not there.
  • Charlotte: You punk! Talking to me like that... Grrrrr...
  • Rinkah: You asked to talk to me. Don't get mad if you don't like what I have to say. I'm off.
  • (Rinkah leaves)
  • Charlotte: He-hey! Wait right there! You're going to say all that and then just run away?!

  • Charlotte: Let's settle this disagreement in a test of our abilities.
  • Rinkah: Go on.
  • Charlotte: You aren't afraid?
  • Rinkah: Psh... Don't be silly. There's no chance I'd be scared of the likes of you. How do we decide who the winner is?
  • Charlotte: When we next train, we train together until one of us is too exhausted to continue. The winner is the last one standing.

  • Rinkah: The skill you displayed in our competition before was the real deal. You've worked incredibly hard to become as strong as you are.
  • Charlotte: It's that obvious? My family wasn't well off when I was young. I learned the value of hard work. I try my hardest because they count on the money I send them.
  • Rinkah: You send them money?
  • Charlotte: I want to help my family live an easier life. That's why I work so hard.
  • Rinkah: I see... I'm sorry; I was completely mistaken about you. I thought you were a selfish woman unconcerned with how you affected others.
  • Charlotte: Ouch!
  • Rinkah: Don't be like that! The way you act, I'm sure I'm not the first person to think that. Regardless, the misunderstanding is all cleared up. You're actually pretty great!
  • Charlotte: I suppose I can forgive you for the mistake.
  • Rinkah: From now on, let's be friends. We can work together to help each other succeed. No more secrets, OK?
  • Charlotte: Ouch! No need to slap my back so hard.

  • Benny: OK. I'm listening.
  • Rinkah: I notice you spend a lot of time alone. You hang back from group stuff.
  • Benny: Yeah...I know...
  • Rinkah: Then you and me are two of a kind. The Flame Tribe values solitude, and I've always been proud to uphold that tradition.
  • Benny: I'm, um. Not. Proud of my solitude, I mean.
  • Rinkah: What? You're kidding me.
  • Benny: It's true...
  • Rinkah: Then why do you spend so much time by yourself?
  • Benny: It's not that I want to be alone... Everyone avoids me because they're afraid.
  • Rinkah: Ugh! And here I thought we were two of a kind. But that's just pathetic. You let me down, Benny!
  • Benny: S...sorry?

B Support

  • Benny: Rinkah...
  • Rinkah: If you don't need anything, don't say anything.
  • Benny: I know the Flame Tribe values solitude...
  • Rinkah: You're damn right. True skill is honed in the fires of single combat. No beast that hunts in a pack can be said to be strong.
  • Benny: Oh.
  • Rinkah: You're obviously strong. Anyone can tell by watching you trounce your enemies. So why do you reject the way of the lone wolf? What do you want other people for?
  • Benny: I...I don't think I'm strong in the way you think I am. If I had to fight on my own...I'd have run away from the battlefield a long time ago.
  • Rinkah: Tch...
  • Benny: It's good for me that I'm not alone. Like you said, I'm part of a pack. I live and fight with allies. I do my best to protect them. That's where any strength I have comes from.
  • Rinkah: Hmm. So you're saying that instead of leaning on the group for strength... you find your individual strength in the group?
  • Benny: Yeah. I guess so.
  • Rinkah: That just sounds crazy to me.
  • Benny: ...
  • Rinkah: But maybe it does explain how you can be so strong... It's something to think about.
  • Benny: Glad I could help...?

A Support

  • Benny: Rinkah...
  • Rinkah: Oh, hey, Benny.
  • Benny: You're not mad at me for talking to you today?
  • Rinkah: Heh. Do you want me to be?
  • Benny: No...I really don't...
  • Rinkah: Then don't ask stupid questions.
  • Benny: Heh...sorry.
  • Rinkah: Benny, look... The Flame Tribe values solitude. I've always held by that, and I still do.
  • Benny: All right.
  • Rinkah: But you made me think some about being part of this army.
  • Benny: Oh?
  • Rinkah: Maybe I was thinking about it the wrong way. Instead of a pack of animals... it might be better to think of us as limbs. I'm strong because I have arms to hold my club, and legs to leap with. I have a heart to pump hot blood, and lungs and a mouth to scream my battle cry. All those, put together, make for one single powerful Flame Tribe warrior. Maybe our army is like that too.
  • Benny: Hmm...
  • Rinkah: When I look at it that way, it makes sense for our group to be so strong.
  • Benny: That way of justifying it seems very...
  • Rinkah: Very what?
  • Benny: Very Rinkah.
  • Rinkah: Heh. The Flame Tribe values solitude.
  • Benny: Yeah...
  • Rinkah: But being part of this group hasn't been so bad at all.
  • Benny: Heh. Good...

S Support

  • Benny: So...um...solitude is important to the Flame Tribe, right?
  • Rinkah: You know it is, Benny. We've been over this.
  • Benny: But do Flame Tribe people never have relationships? Never fall in love?
  • Rinkah: Don't be stupid. Of course they do. Did you think I grew on a tree?
  • Benny: Oh...good point...
  • Rinkah: There's a difference between preferring solitude and shunning society. You can be a private person even when you're in the middle of a group.
  • Benny: That makes me feel better.
  • Rinkah: Heh. Were you nervous about telling me you loved me?
  • Benny: Yeah. I— Um! How did you—?! Wait!
  • Rinkah: Come on, Benny. You're an open book. You were blushing and stammering even more than usual.
  • Benny: I...I thought...I was being subtle...
  • Rinkah: There's more to expressing yourself than what you say. You realize that Flame Tribe warriors don't accept weak mates, right? A weak man has no chance with a woman.
  • Benny: I know... I just hoped...
  • Rinkah: Good thing you don't have anything to worry about there. You're a terror in battle, sure. But you've also got a strong heart. I didn't figure that out about you for a long time.
  • Benny: I...guess I do. I care a lot about people. I care a lot about you.
  • Rinkah: That's what I mean. Between your strong heart and my fierce muscles... the two of us will make a single powerful couple.
  • Benny: So...um...
  • Rinkah: Yeah, I said it. Get used to it, Benny. We're going to be together a long time.

  • Rinkah: ...
  • Keaton: I have just one question for ya.
  • Rinkah: Did you not hear a word I said?

  • Rinkah: Tsk. Fine. But I'm only going to say this once. So listen well.
  • Keaton: Woohoo! I'm all ears!
  • Rinkah: To be independent means one does not rely too much on others. But for the Flame Tribe, it means much more. We are committed to walking our own path, despite what others say or do. We do not compromise, we do not beg for aid, and we do not sell our loyalty.
  • Keaton: Uh-huh...
  • Rinkah: It's as I thought, isn't it? You don't understand.
  • Keaton: What?! Of course I do! There's nothing complicated about that! It just means you like being alone, right?
  • Rinkah: Alone? You dare boil it down so simply?
  • Keaton: Oh, did I get it wrong?
  • Rinkah: You make it sound like we're sullen little children who don't want to share toys! It's about principles and honor and dignity!
  • Keaton: OK, I get it! No need to yell! So would it be better to say that you're, like, a lone wolf?
  • Rinkah: I guess that would do. It's about as close as you're likely able to get, in any case.
  • Keaton: Phew. You're pretty scary when you snap like that, you know?
  • Rinkah: Now, your business with me is over. Kindly remove yourself from my sight.

  • Keaton: I think you're really cool, you know.
  • Rinkah: What the?! Where is this coming from?
  • Keaton: Lone wolves... They're always the strongest ones.
  • Rinkah: ...

  • Rinkah: Hmm...
  • Keaton: Anyway, if you aren't gonna talk to me, least you could do is let me hang around. Just for a little bit! I just wanna get a feel for the lone wolf's way of life.

  • Rinkah: I don't NOT want to!
  • Keaton: Really?! So you will?
  • Rinkah: I didn't say that! I'm the daughter of my tribe's chieftain. I've got responsibilities to consider. I can't be with someone outside the tribe...
  • Keaton: Oh. Is that one of your rules?
  • Rinkah: It is.
  • Keaton: I see... So there's no hope, is there?
  • Rinkah: I didn't say that either! That rule is more a strong guideline than an absolute law. There have been exceptions made in the past.
  • Keaton: Exceptions?
  • Rinkah: Yes. But they're strongly discouraged. You should only make one if it's important. So I have to know that you're serious about this. Do you understand?
  • Keaton: Yes. Of course I do. And I am serious.
  • Rinkah: Good! Then...we can be together. But you'd better not let me down. I'm...counting on you. I don't do that very often. Understand?

  • Kana: I just remember when I was real little, we'd go looking at flowers together. You always smiled so much. And I love your smile, Mama! So I decided to start bringing you lots and lots of flowers to help you smile!
  • Rinkah: Heh. You noticed that? You're pretty observant, you know. But I do have a favor to ask you.
  • Kana: Anything, Mama. What is it?
  • Rinkah: Well, you probably know this, but flowers are living things, like you and me. Which means that they need food and water, which they only get through their roots. So you can't pick them just because they're pretty, you know?
  • Kana: Oh no! You mean I've been hurting them this whole time? I'm so sorry, flowers! I didn't mean to! I've been such a big meanie.
  • Rinkah: No, no, it's OK so long as you understand now. Just don't go picking any more flowers from now on, all right?
  • Kana: OK! But...then how will I show you all the neat flowers I find?
  • Rinkah: Fair point. Next time you come across some, just come and get me. That way we can go look at them together.
  • Kana: Really? You wont be too busy?
  • Rinkah: Too busy for you? Never!
  • Kana: OK! I'll take that as a promise!
  • Rinkah: Heh. All right. I promise.

  • Kana: La la lalala-la-la And now it's Mama time!
  • Rinkah: Whoa, whoa, slow down, Kana. You're going to trip and hurt yourself.
  • Kana: But I'm just so excited! I found some perfect flowers for us to look at. I can't wait for you to see them! Oh! There they are, Mama!
  • Rinkah: Oh, those red flowers? Those are interesting. The petals look like flames. They're beautiful, Kana.
  • Kana: Aren't they? They reminded of you, Mama.
  • Rinkah: Wh-what?! Are you kidding me?! I'm not some dainty little flower! But I suppose those are pretty unique as far as flowers go... I...um, thank you, Kana. I'm sorry I overreacted. I'm just not used to flattery, I guess.
  • Kana: It's OK, Mama. You don't have to be embarrassed. I think those flowers are pretty, but your smiles are way, way prettier!
  • Rinkah: Heh. You little brownnoser. Well you know what? Your smile is the prettiest of all!
  • Kana: Really? Yay!
  • Rinkah: Oh, right, I just remembered. I have something I want to show you later.
  • Kana: Ooh, what is it? Is it something good?
  • Rinkah: Of course it is. It's at home, but I can tell you what it is. It's-
  • Kana: Ah! Wait! Never mind. I don't want to spoil the surprise!
  • Rinkah: Fine. I'll keep it a secret until then. But you'd better still be excited!
  • Kana: OK! I can't wait!

  • Kana: Hey, Mama! Where's that thing you said you wanted to show me?
  • Rinkah: Oh, there you are, Kana. Here, feast your eyes on this.
  • Kana: Oh wow! This is such a big book! And look at all the flowers! Where did you get them?
  • Rinkah: These are the ones you've been bringing me! I learned how to dry them and press between the pages to keep them safe. I figured it was the perfect place for me to keep all your little gifts.
  • Kana: They're amazing! Like, super amazing! And they're all so pretty! I didn't know I had given you so many different kinds of flowers. Oh! Look! These are the yellow daisies I gave you!
  • Rinkah: Yeah, I was pretty shocked when I counted them. You've been a busy girl, Kana.
  • Kana: Oh, Mama. Thank you for taking such good care of the flowers I gave you.
  • Rinkah: No, I should be thanking you. These flowers have brought me a lot comfort. Even in war-especially in war-it's good to be reminded of things like this. So thank you, Kana.
  • Kana: Heehee. You're welcome.
  • Rinkah: You know, we didn't pick those flowers we saw the other day. But I think we'll hang on to that memory for a long time to come anyways. I hope we'll have many more memories just like that. How about you?
  • Kana: Me too! I love you, Mama!
  • Rinkah: I love you too, Kana...

  • Dwyer: Mother, I made you some coffee.
  • Rinkah: Oh, really? Thanks, Dwyer. Hmm. Wow, this is wonderful. You've gotten awfully good at making coffee.
  • Dwyer: Really? I'm glad you like it so much.
  • Rinkah: I may not know much about coffee, but this brew is excellent. I'd say it's even better than your father's.
  • Dwyer: That's high praise. Maybe I should keep that to myself. He might get mad.
  • Rinkah: You think? It's seems a little silly for a grown man to get upset over something so silly. He can be prideful. And very jealous, from time to time.
  • Dwyer: That actually sounds worse.
  • Rinkah: Haha! Yeah, you may be right about that. If he heard us talking, I'd bet he'd make me sample cup after cup of his brew. At least until I said his coffee tasted better than yours.
  • Dwyer: Heh, yeah. I can imagine that. I still have more in the carafe. Let me know if you'd like another cup later.
  • Rinkah: I will. Thanks, Dwyer.

B Support

  • Dwyer: Hmm.
  • Rinkah: Is something on your mind?
  • Dwyer: Oh, hello, Mother. No, nothing in particular.
  • Rinkah: Don't underestimate me, Son. I am your mother, after all. You think you can fool me?
  • Dwyer: Oh. Sorry.
  • Rinkah: Just tell me what's going on. Getting it off your chest might make you feel better.
  • Dwyer: Well, it's just... I don't think I'm suited for the battlefield.
  • Rinkah: Why do you think that?
  • Dwyer: You know why. I hate getting into fights. All I would do is weigh everyone else down in the heat of battle.
  • Rinkah: Dwyer, don't say that.
  • Dwyer: Maybe I should just leave the army and be a butler somewhere.
  • Rinkah: No, you shouldn't do that.
  • Dwyer: Huh?
  • Rinkah: Dwyer, you belong here.
  • Dwyer: Why?
  • Rinkah: Because you're so kind.
  • Dwyer: No, I'm not.
  • Rinkah: Don't be silly. Of course you are. Just now you tried to obscure your troubles to keep me from worrying about you.
  • Dwyer: All the more proof that I have no business on the battlefield. There's no place for kindness there.
  • Rinkah: You're wrong, Dwyer. It's on the battlefield that kindness is needed most of all. Without compassion and unity, we can't see this conflict through 'til the end. You think of others, regardless of danger. We need that kind of heart in this fight. Just know, you're truly suited for battle.
  • Dwyer: ... Thank you, Mother. I'll do what I can to help my friends.
  • Rinkah: Good. I'll always be here, watching out for you.

A Support

  • Rinkah: *sigh*
  • Dwyer: Mother? Is something wrong?
  • Rinkah: Oh, Dwyer... It's nothing. Don't worry. I'm just feeling tired today. Nothing for you to worry about.
  • Dwyer: I'm your son. You know I can see through your lies, right?
  • Rinkah: Heheheh... I suppose your right.
  • Dwyer: I may not be able to help, but I'm more than happy to listen.
  • Rinkah: Thanks, Dwyer. I really appreciate it.
  • Dwyer: So? What's up?
  • Rinkah: Honestly, I just feel that I've failed you as a mother.
  • Dwyer: That's not true at all. Don't say that.
  • Rinkah: But I said that you belonged on the battlefield.
  • Dwyer: You mean when I was worried the other day?
  • Rinkah: Yes. But a mother should always be most concerned with their child's safety. But I've told you to risk your life. To run directly toward danger. That must make me a failure.
  • Dwyer: That's not true.
  • Rinkah: Huh? What do you mean?
  • Dwyer: You may have suggested that I stand and fight, but it was my choice to stay. Not yours.
  • Rinkah: Oh.
  • Dwyer: More importantly, I needed your wisdom. I might have put my friends in danger without your encouragement.
  • Rinkah: Dwyer, I had no idea.
  • Dwyer: So please, stop worrying. You're not a failure at all! You're the best mother anyone could ever hope for.
  • Rinkah: That's ridiculous. But thank you.
  • Dwyer: Now, why don't I make some fresh coffee so you can relax and unwind.
  • Rinkah: You sure are a sweet kid. I'm lucky to have such a thoughtful son.

  • Sophie: Look! I found some of those flowers you love! Ones just like what you have!
  • Rinkah: These ARE nice. Thanks.
  • Sophie: Heehee. I'm glad you like them!
  • Rinkah: Where were they, though?
  • Sophie: That's what's so amazing! They were really close by! I can go back and get you more, if you want. There's a bunch more!
  • Rinkah: I'm gonna stop you right there. Because something tells me these are the flowers I planted a few days ago.
  • Sophie: Then that means... Oh no! That explains why I hadn't seen those flowers there before! I'm so sorry, Mother!
  • Rinkah: That's OK. It's enough for me that you tried.
  • Sophie: Can...can I go back and plant these again? They'll grow back their roots, right? Awwwww! Why am I always screwing up things like this?!

B Support

  • Sophie: *sigh* Why am I such a klutz?
  • Rinkah: Something wrong, Sophie?
  • Sophie: Hey, Mother... Do you think I'll always be a klutz? Earlier today, I went to the market and got a bunch of apples for myself and Avel. When I got back, I decided to see if he could catch one in his mouth, but... I let go on the windup, and the apple hit an old lady behind me instead! Also, Avel fell over. I don't know why that happened.
  • Rinkah: Ha ha ha ha!
  • Sophie: Mother! Don't laugh at me.
  • Rinkah: Given the stories you tell? That's a tall order, kid.
  • Sophie: I'm seriously worrying about my future here, Mother!
  • Rinkah: Aw, really? Sorry about that. But so what if you're kind of clumsy? It's not worth getting so upset over.
  • Sophie: I'm not a little clumsy! My life is one long series of mistakes and blunders!
  • Rinkah: It's fine to make mistakes in life. It's not fine to let it rattle you so much that you give up. But you've never done that.
  • Sophie: But... But...
  • Rinkah: You know, our tribe has a saying about people with a clumsy streak-
  • Sophie: Now you're just making things up, Mother.
  • Rinkah: Heh...worth a try.
  • Sophie: *sigh* Thanks or cheering me up, though.

  • Sophie: I sure am! What you said the other day really cheered me up.
  • Rinkah: Really. You're sure you're not just in a better mood now that you've got some sleep?
  • Sophie: Why do you always have to tease me?
  • Rinkah: Heheheh...
  • Sophie: Oh, that odes remind me, though... I made a small mistake at breakfast today. I... accidentally gave the horses the soldiers' meals.
  • Rinkah: Not what I'd call a small mistake...
  • Sophie: But once I realized my error, I rushed to make fresh meals for everyone. Suddenly, they all joined in to help! It made me really happy.
  • Rinkah: That's some impressive support.
  • Sophie: Yeah, I think so too!
  • Rinkah: Where do you think it comes from?
  • Sophie: Maybe they were worried that I would burn everything?
  • Rinkah: They weren't worried about anything. They helped because your energy and enthusiasm bled over into them.
  • Sophie: It did? I don't know...
  • Rinkah: I'm telling you, it's true. Just focus on fixing whatever you mess up. That's all anyone expects from you.
  • Sophie: OK, Mother! I think I can do that. Oh! Also, I think I found some flowers nearby that I'm sure you'll like. We can go check them out together!
  • Rinkah: Yeah, we can do that. Wait a minute...
  • Sophie: Don't worry! They aren't the ones you replanted. I didn't pick any in advance, either-just in case!
  • Rinkah: Heh, I was just about to ask.
  • Sophie: All right! Let's go!

  • Rinkah: Hello, Midori. What is that you're holding?
  • Midori: Remember how your knee was bothering you the other day? Well, I made a special ointment. It should help out with the pain. It took me a couple of days to track down the right herbs, but I did it!
  • Rinkah: You did that for me? Thanks, Midori.
  • Midori: Heehee. Why don't you take a seat and get comfortable. I will apply it for you, OK? Shoo, pain---stop bothering Mother!
  • Rinkah: Heh. This medicine of ours is potent. My pain is already gone!
  • Midori: Really? Yaaaay! Err, I mean, I'm glad that it helped.
  • Rinkah: Did Father help you create this ointment?
  • Midori: He sure did! I mentioned that you'd been in pain, and he gave me a few ideas. I still had to do a ton of research though.
  • Rinkah: You are certainly passionate about your studies. I bet your father was pleased. He loves to share his knowledge with you.
  • Midori: Heehee, I hope so! He's always pleased when I come to him with a new herb.
  • Rinkah: Of course he is. You're our clever and caring daughter. We're so proud of you.
  • Midori: Heeheehee!! Thank you. I love you, Mother!

  • Midori: Nothing... Nothing, I'm fine. *sniffle*
  • Rinkah: Did something happen? You look so upset.
  • Midori: Well... I was in the forest collecting a few herbs, and some kids came up to me. They asked where my parents were and laughed when I said I was an adult. Then they said they were going deeper into the forest. I tried to warn them... But they turned to me and said, "Kids can't tell us what to do!" and ran off.
  • Rinkah: I understand... Did the children get home safely?
  • Midori: Yes, they did. I watched them carefully to make sure they came back from the forest.
  • Rinkah: That's a relief. I'm glad you were kind enough to watch out for them.
  • Midori: I guess...
  • Rinkah: Please stop crying, Midori. People won't always understand or applaud your good deeds. But that doesn't mean you should stop being considerate and kind.
  • Midori: You're right. I'll be true to myself.
  • Rinkah: Other people may not appreciate all you do. I promise that I will. I believe in you, Midori. Just follow your heart.

  • Midori: Mother!
  • Rinkah: Good morning, Midori. My, you're in great spirits today!
  • Midori: I am. Something wonderful happened. Remember those kids I met while I was collecting herbs the other day?
  • RInkah: The ones you warned, right?
  • Midori: Yeah. I ran into them in town earlier, and they were so nice. They even apologized for being rude to me.
  • Rinkah: Is that right? So they understood that you were just trying to help?
  • Midori: They sure did. Well, that and I think their parents yelled at them for being so mean. But it still made me feel better.
  • Rinkah: Hmm... So those children weren't so bad after all.
  • Midori: I think we're friends now. But, um... They invited me to go back into the deep forest with them... They said we'd be safe if I came along, but I'm not so sure. We probably shouldn't go without a grown-up, right?
  • Rinkah: That would be for the best. The deep forest is no place for children. Honestly, it's dangerous for adults too. I just want you to stay safe.
  • Midori: Ok, we'll keep away from there. I promise. Anyway, I already suggested that the kids come with me to collect some rare herbs. I told them it'd be much more fun than wandering around some dank, dark forest.
  • Rinkah: That sounds like a wise plan. Have fun with your friends.
  • Midori: OK! Thanks, Mother!

  • Shiro: Hey, Mom. Do you feel like doing something today?
  • Rinkah: Hm? Why do you ask?
  • Shiro: Well, we didn't get to spend much time together when I was little, right? Maybe now we can make up for that with some mom-son bonding time!
  • Rinkah: Ah, so that's what this is about. What a kind thought. Honestly, I can't think of anything to do right now. I appreciate the sentiment though.
  • Shiro: How can we bond if you don't want to hang out? I mean, I can't spend time with Dad. He's always preoccupied with the war. I guess you don't see him much either. Has he ever given you a gift or anything? How do you know he really cares?
  • Rinkah: Shiro, that's not in Ryoma's nature.
  • Shiro: Well, unlike him, I want you to know how special you are, Mom. Come on. Please! Can't you think of something you would like to do?
  • Rinkah: Hahaha!
  • Shiro: Wh-why are you laughing at me?!
  • Rinkah: It's just that suddenly, you're so worried about your father... He wouldn't be happy if he heard you talking like this. All you need to know is that I'm happy to have married him. He treats me very well.
  • Shiro: Mom, are you sure? He's never even around to show that he cares.
  • Rinkah: You may not know it, but the truth is that he loves me deeply... I can even prove it to you.
  • Shiro: I'd be curious to see your so-called proof. I'll hold you to your word, Mom!
  • Rinkah: It's a deal!

  • Rinkah: These are the proof I was telling you about.
  • Shiro: Let me take a guess. Love letters?
  • Rinkah: That's right. I've saved each and every one that he wrote to me. This is the first one I received. And this is the most recent.
  • Shiro: Wow, I had no idea that Dad was such a prolific writer.
  • Rinkah: He is. I knew he was diligent by nature, but even I was surprised at his commitment. He tells me about his feelings when we talk in person too. But I think writing allows him to explore his emotions in a deeper way. I really love that thoughtful side of him. You look surprised. Is this not quite what you were expecting?
  • Shiro: I've always thought of Dad as being stiff and formal. Maybe I've been wrong all along. Tell me, what does he write about?
  • Rinkah: D-don't be ridiculous! There's no way I could tell you that. Your dad wrote these just for me. They're private, Shiro.
  • Shiro: Now I'm even more curious! I suppose knowing how much you two care about each other will have to do.
  • Rinkah: I'm glad to hear you say that. You don't have to worry, Shiro. We love you, too.
  • Shiro: I-I know that! But thanks, Mom.
  • Rinkah: Heheheh. Of course.

  • Shiro: Well, after you showed me Dad's letters. I started thinking... I thought maybe I'd try writing out my thoughts and feelings too. What it's like to be your son... Y'know, that kind of thing.
  • Rinkah: Really? I would love to read that!
  • Shiro: I don't know. Now it just doesn't seem good enough.
  • Rinkah: What do you say that?
  • Shiro: It's not very special if I'm just doing the same thing as Dad, right? That's why I've decided to treat you to a fancy meal too!
  • Rinkah: Wow. A meal, huh?
  • Shiro: Yeah. Whatever you heart desires. Or at least anything I can find in the forest. I can't get started until you tell me what you'd like to eat. Does anything in particular sound yummy to you?
  • Rinkah: Hmm, let me see... Can you gie me some time to think it over? I'm not sure right now.
  • Shiro: OK. I guess it would be tough to think of something off the top of your head. Just tell me when you think of something. All right! Now I've got a leg up on Dad!
  • Rinkah: Shiro, this isn't a competition. There are winners or losers.
  • Shiro: I'd just feel like a failure as your son if I couldn't make you happy.
  • Rinkah: That's funny... I think you dad once said the same thing.
  • Shiro: He did?!
  • Rinkah: Yes. if I recall correctly... He said he would have failed me as a husbad if I wasn't a happy wife. Heheh. You know what they say. Like father, like son.

  • Kiragi: Yikes! H-hey, Mom. You sure are good at sneaking around.
  • Rinkah: Stop making that nasty face at me. That's no way to treat your mother.
  • Kiragi: Sorry. You look like you're about to attack.
  • Rinkah: What are you doing out here? Don't you remember me telling you to stay home today? *sigh* This is hopeless.
  • Kiragi: I'm sorry. Listen, I promise I'll do some work as soon as I get home, OK?
  • Rinkah: No you won't. Don't try and fool me. Every time you get back from hunting all you wanna do is eat and go to bed.
  • Kiragi: B-but I don't want to study. I'm awful at math and history.
  • Rinkah: That's why you have to study, idiot! You're not going to improve by sitting around and complaining.
  • Kiragi: I can survive being bad at a few subjects. I don't see what the big deal is.
  • Rinkah: Those aren't the only ones you're terrible at! You need to start taking your education seriously now before it's too late. I admit, your father and I are partially to blame for not being around. But that's why I'm so determined to teach you everything I can.
  • Kiragi: *grumble*
  • Rinkah: Starting today, you have to cut down on hunting, understand? I'll stay and help as much as I can.
  • Kiragi: No! This isn't fair! Hunting is the only thing I have to look forward to. Don't try and take that away from me. You may be my mother, but you can't force me to do anything. I'm going hunting, and I don't care whether you like it or not!
  • Rinkah: Kiragi, get back here right now! Damn...

  • Kiragi: What an amazing day! No one will be going hungry anytime soon! That bird sure gave me a lot of trouble. I should look it up when I get home. Maybe I need to build some new traps, too.
  • (Scene transition)
  • Kiragi: OK, careful. Easy does it... I can't let Mom know that I was out hunting instead of resting. "Work harder on your studies!" That's all she ever thinks about. Like I need math or history to be a good tracker.
  • Rinkah: Hmm, I should reword this...
  • Kiragi: It looks like she's writing something. What is she doing?
  • Rinkah: This is a tough formula. I bet it would be easier for him if I changed it to rabbits in a trap. Yeah, that would definitely be better.
  • Kiragi: Huh?
  • Rinkah: Oops, I forgot to track down that detailed history book. It has such a clear timeline. I bet that would help him catch up. I guess I'll have to look for it later.
  • Kiragi: Geez, she's working really hard.
  • Rinkah: He might not know it, but Kiragi is much smarter than I am. If I can get him to learn one thing at a time, I know he can catch up. If only I could find a way to make him care.
  • Kiragi: Hi, Mom.
  • Rinkah: Ah, welcome back, Kiragi. Why are you just standing there?
  • Kiragi: I-I'm sorry, Mom. You're putting so much energy into helping me learn, and I keep running off to hunt.
  • Rinkah: Kiragi, it's fine, really. I'm sorry that I was so hard on you. I'm just happy that you've come around and you understand why this is important. Will you give up some hunting time to study>
  • Kiragi: I will! I didn't realize how much this mattered until I saw you just now. Please, teach me! I want to learn about math and history.
  • Rinkah: That's great. Why don't we get started right away?
  • Kiragi: OK! But wait, I'm totally covered in mud. Let me change real quick-then we can start! Wait right there!
  • Rinkah: Thank you, Kiragi.

A Support

  • Kiragi: All right, I solved it! Take that, math problem!
  • Rinkah: You did, huh? Yeah, your answer is right. But how did you reach that conclusion?
  • Kiragi: Ah, about that. I know you normally start on the right... But if you make an assumption here, you can skip a bunch of extra calculations. I think the book called it an advanced method, but it wasn't that tough.
  • Rinkah: I see-that explains it. How clever.
  • Kiragi: Hehheh!
  • Rinkah: This is impressive. Your history assignment was perfect too! All the years, places, and important events were in the right spots.
  • Kiragi: It was so much easier once I started thinking of them as fantastic stories. Boring random facts are so much harder to remember. And it helps to have a great teacher, too!
  • Rinkah: Kiragi, don't give me too much credit. You're doing a really great job. I appreciate all your hard work.
  • Kiragi: Stop, Mom! You're going to make me blush.
  • Rinkah: Well, I'm already done with everything I wanted to teach you for the day. Why don't you run and do some hunting?
  • Kiragi: Um... Hmm. Thanks, but that's all right.
  • Rinkah: What?
  • Kiragi: I mean, hunting is great and all. But I'd love to study some more with you.
  • Rinkah: Kiragi, are you sure?
  • Kiragi: You made me understand that learning can be such a blast! I can't believe that I used to dread it. We can keep going, right?
  • Rinkah: Yeah, of course, if you really want to. Will you show me how you did that math problem again?
  • Kiragi: OK!

  • Asugi: M-Mom?! Shouldn't you be asleep? It's really late.
  • Rinkah: Yes. I SHOULD be asleep. But I'm not, because I was worried half to death.
  • Asugi: I'm fine, Mom. It's an early morning tomorrow. You should be asleep!
  • Rinkah: You try sleeping with a head full of terrible visions of your son in chains!
  • Asugi: Look, I get sent out on these recon trips because I'm good at them. We all risk our lives when we're out on our missions, and I'm no different.
  • Rinkah: Ah, but most of us are smart enough not to go ALONE! And since I couldn't sleep, I figured I'd hang around until you came back.
  • Asugi: I told you, I'm fine. I do what I have to, and that's the end of it. If you stay up all night, you'll just be a liability to all of us tomorrow.

  • Asugi: WHAA-?! What...? MOM?! What in the name of all that is sweet and holy are you doing here?
  • Rinkah: Giving you the backup you need!
  • Asugi: Wh-why would you follow me? This place is dangerous!
  • Rinkah: Weren't you listening? These missions shouldn't be handled solo.
  • Asugi: You shouldn't be here, Mom. This is MY mission, not yours!
  • Rinkah: Oh, relax. It's a simple scouting mission. You'll hardly notice I'm here.
  • Asugi: SHH! Be quiet!
  • Rinkah: M-mmph!
  • Asugi: Not another word! The enemy patrol is heading this way...
  • Rinkah: Asugi...don't do that again.
  • Asugi: *sigh* OK, they're gone. Gods, my heart is racing. I was certain they'd spotted us.
  • Rinkah: Hmph. That's no excuse.
  • Asugi: Geez, Mom. I know parents like to bond with their kids, but this is overkill!
  • Rinkah: That's ridiculous! You talk like I'm breathing down your neck...when all I want to do is go with you on all your missions to make sure you don't die!
  • Asugi: Ugh, enough is enough. I can't think straight when you're here. This whole mission is a bust. Let's go.
  • Rinkah: What?! Get back here!
  • Asugi: Come on, Mom. I know a shortcut back. It's time to go home.
  • Rinkah: But we were going to have a mother-son mission! It's a great chance to bond!
  • Asugi: Not anymore. Come on, let's hurry back.
  • Rinkah: F...fine...

A Support

  • Rinkah: All right, Asugi. It's time we went over tonight's mission.
  • Asugi: ...We are not going anywhere. You're not coming along.
  • Rinkah: That's what you think. I refuse to let you go on another solo mission.
  • Asugi: Mom, you're being unreasonable. Don't you trust me?
  • Rinkah: They're taking you for granted, sending you alone all the time! Tell me I'm wrong! What kind of mother would be OK with that?!
  • Asugi: We each have our own part to play in this war, Mom. I'm a ninja, so I fulfill the roles that my training has prepared me for. When you follow me, it puts us both in very real danger. Instead of focusing on the mission, I can only think of protecting you.
  • Rinkah: Hrngh... That wasn't what I was trying to do. I was just...worried.
  • Asugi: ...
  • Rinkah: Do you know what it's like, constantly imagining these terrible fates for you? The only thing worse than you getting hurt would be knowing I could have stopped it!
  • Asugi: Mom... Look, this is embarrassing, so I'm only going to say it once.
  • Rinkah: Hm?
  • Asugi: When I got back from my mission that one night and I saw you waiting up for me... I was really happy.
  • Rinkah: That's not how I remember it...
  • Asugi: No, seriously. It made me realize that I has a real home to back to. Knowing you're out there, waiting for me, makes me desperate to make it back home. No matter how much danger I'm in or what I have to do to make it back safely... I always will. I will always, always come back home to you.
  • Rinkah: Asugi...
  • Asugi: That's why I need you to stay here. My home is wherever YOU are. I can't do what I do without knowing that I have a loving home waiting for me. As long as you're here, safe and happy, I'll never lose heart.
  • Rinkah: ...Ugh...fine, fine. I'm sorry I barged in on your missions. I only wanted to help. But if you'd rather I backed off, the I will.
  • Asugi: Mom... Thank you. You don't know what that means to me.
  • Rinkah: I'll do my best to trust in your skills and keep the house in one piece for you. You're usually hungry when you come back, right? Should I have food ready for you?
  • Asugi: That...would be AMAZING!
  • Rinkah: Great! I'll make sure to always have something sweet in there, or course. I followed you on your missions because I love you, you know. And now...I'll stop for the same reason.
  • Asugi: Thanks, Mom. I love you too.

  • Selkie: Hey, Mom! What are you doing? Wanna go outside and play?
  • Rinkah: What the- How'd you get all that mud on you, Selkie?
  • Selkie: Oh! I was exploring in the forest, and I think I fell off a cliff or two. Heehee!
  • Rinkah: What?! But you're OK, right?
  • Selkie: Aww, I'm fine. I just scraped my knees a little bit. Everything still works the way it's supposed to. See?
  • Rinkah: That's good. Nice form on those jumping jacks, by the way. I admire your energy, but you might be too rambunctious for your own good. Why don't you find a hobby you can do inside instead?
  • Selkie: Grr, that's no fun! Like what?
  • Rinkah: I hear knitting's nice.
  • Selkie: I dunno...sounds boring. Oh! I have an idea! Let's play dress up! We can put on makeup and everything.
  • Rinkah: M-makeup?! Why that, of all things? ...I probably shouldn't complain if it keeps you indoors, huh?
  • Selkie: Yay! Let's do it! Gimme that lipstick!
  • Rinkah: W-wait. I don't have any lipstick on me. I'll round up some things and get back to you later.
  • Selkie: All right... this is gonna be great!

B Support

  • Rinkah: Ready, Selkie?
  • Selkie: Oh yeah! Bring it on!
  • Rinkah: I'm way out of practice with this stuff. Ordinarily, the only makeup I ever bother with is my tribal war paint.
  • Selkie: Yes! War paint! Right under the eyes with lipstick! I want green-do you have green?
  • Rinkah: No. I have red. Now, I usually don't bother with it, but most girls start with some foundation.
  • Selkie: You mean this powdery stuff? I think it's gonna make me sneeze. AH-CHOO! Oh no...it's everywhere!
  • Rinkah: Ah...ah...ACHOO! Hmph. Now you see why I don't bother.
  • Selkie: *sniff* I'm sorry, Mom. I'm screwing everything up, aren't I?
  • Rinkah: I honestly have no idea. It's a real pain to learn-that's why I never cared much. But if this is something you want, we can learn how to do it together.
  • Selkie: Really? OK...that sounds good.
  • Rinkah: Good girl. We might not be naturals, but that just means we need to try harder. Hmm. I think I'll practice on you first. That way I can see what I'm doing, and you can learn as I go. What else do you want besides the war paint?
  • Selkie: Fierceness! I want to look like I could rip your head off with my teeth. Rawr! I mean, not YOUR head, Mom. Anyway, make me look fierce!
  • Rinkah: Heheh. You came to the right woman.

  • Selkie: Hey, Mom! Guess what?
  • Rinkah: Hi, Selkie. What's all the fuss about?
  • Selkie: Well, I got so many compliments on the makeup you did for me. People said that I looked terrifying!
  • Rinkah: Really? Huh.
  • Selkie: Uh-huh! There's just one problem...
  • Rinkah: Here it comes...
  • Selkie: Well, I loved the makeup, but it took so long to put on. I'd kind of rather spend that time outside playing and running.
  • Rinkah: Oh, is that all? I just thought...
  • Selkie: Oh! But that doesn't mean I didn't like being with you. It was really fun to see how you put it all together. I guess what I'm saying is... Sometimes I want to do makeup with you, but other times... I want to run outside and play with you!
  • Rinkah: You're speaking my language. Let's ditch the makeup and so something REALLY fun!
  • Selkie: Yay!
  • Rinkah: Where do we start? Tag? Playing catch? How about we race to the edge of that field over there?
  • Selkie: Aww, you're the best! I'm so glad you're my mom!

  • Rinkah: Hey, Hisame. Got a sec?
  • Hisame: Oh, hello, Mother. What do you-? Wait, is that-? Why do you have that?!
  • Rinkah: Ah, so it IS yours. I found it when I was cleaning out my things. It's a diary, right?
  • Hisame: Y-yes. It is. Why? Did you read any of it?
  • Rinkah: Nope. Figured it looks like one, is all. I haven't looked inside. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't. There's a lock.
  • Hisame: Oh, thank the gods. I'd forgotten about that lock! May I have the book now, then?
  • Rinkah: Um. Sure. Don't see why not.
  • Hisame: Excelle- Mother? You, umm...you can let go now. ...Is something wrong?
  • Rinkah: Wellllll... I guess I'm a little curious about what's in this book now.
  • Hisame: Well, I'd very much appreciate it if you didn't indulge that curiosity. There are some things that should remain private. Even from one's family.
  • Rinkah: Ohhhh. I gotcha. It's got THAT sort of stuff in it. Well, no need to be embarrassed! Puberty is an interesting time for everyone, kiddo. ALthough to fill a whole book...
  • Hisame: Just what are you trying to imply?! In any case, this diary is from when I was much younger! To be honest, I don't even remember what I wrote. I just know it was private.
  • Rinkah: Oh, really? That's all it was?
  • Hisame: Yes, really. So may I please have it back now?
  • Rinkah: Fine, fine. Here ya go.
  • Hisame: Thank you. Now, if you don't mind, I'll be on my way.
  • Rinkah: Well, he sure left in a hurry. Hm... I know I shouldn't, but I still really want a peek into that diary of his...

B Support

  • Rinkah: Hey, Hisame. I had some questions about that old diary of yours.
  • Hisame: What? You DID read it, didn't you?!
  • Rinkah: Nah. It just got me thinking, is all. You know how when you were little, we didn't get to spend much time together? I want to know more about what you were like back then. I feel like we missed your childhood...and I thought the diary might help with that. So, if you find anything you're willing to share, please let me know. Is that OK?
  • Hisame: Yes, I'm glad you want to know more about me. Perhaps we could read the diary together?
  • Rinkah: Are you sure? Before, you seemed so upset at the idea I'd read it.
  • Hisame: Yes, I'm sure. I think it would be fun to look back on those times with you. However, I truly don't remember what I wrote in it... So I reserve the right to skip over anything I do not wish to share.
  • Rinkah: Heh. All right. Let's do it!
  • Hisame: Right now? All right, let me just find the key... Ah! There we go. Now, let's see... "Today was a great day! Mama came to see me. I wonder when I'll see her next. Maybe it'll be real soon this time. We got to play a lot today, so I don't think I'll feel lonely again for a while." Haha. It appears as though I wrote about your visits on nearly every page.
  • Rinkah: You spent a lot of time thinking about us, huh? You were so sweet...
  • Hisame: Huh? Oh, I don't know about that. I am surprised there's nothing about my daily life in here, though. But I suppose those visits were always the things I looked forward to most. They were a rare treat, after all.
  • Rinkah: Yeah... Makes you realize just how precious the time we have together really is. We should treasure them every moment.
  • Hisame: Heh. I feel the same way, Mother.

A Support

  • Rinkah: Hm.
  • Hisame: Mother? You don't seem well. Is everything all right?
  • Rinkah: Huh? Oh, yeah, I'm great.
  • Hisame: Then why do you look so distressed? Or...is it something you'd rather not discuss with your son?
  • RInkah: No, it's not that. I'm just still thinking about that diary of yours. I was so happy you let me read it with you, but...some of it was hard to hear. You were always waiting for us to come visit you, and we made it so rarely... When I think about how lonely you must have gotten...I get so angry with myself. I know saying it isn't going to change a thing. But at least let me apologize. I was a horrible mother. I'm so, so sorry, Hisame.
  • Hisame: Please...it's all right. I understand why things had to be the way they were. Besides, I'm happier now than I have ever been. As a child, all I'd think about was when I might see you and Father next. But now I fight alongside you. I can contribute. I have purpose. So do not trouble yourself too much over me. I am content.
  • Rinkah: Hisame... Thank you.
  • Hisame: I barely did anything! But I'm glad you feel better.
  • Rinkah: I do. And I promise...I'll never allow us to be separated like that again.
  • Hisame: And I pray the day never comes when anything threatens to part us. Thank you, Mother.

  • Rinkah: Hot rats! Do you really think I'm going to let you just get away with that?! That's it. I'm coming in!
  • Mitama: Please, honored Mother / My bed is warm; you are cold / Do not part us so. Besides, I am too tired to attend. I would just fall asleep at the table.
  • Rinkah: You're only tired because you were up all night reading those old books again. Sometimes I'm of half a mind to burn the lot of them. I have to admit, though, I'm impressed with your devotion to the stuff. Who did you get it from?
  • Mitama: The answer is clear / A gift from Father did it / A brush and paper. I remember it like it was yesterday.
  • Rinkah: No, that can't be all it was. You can do tons of things with a brush. You could have tried writing stories, or drawing, or keeping a journal, blah blah. But you chose poetry. Why do you think that is?
  • Mitama: I must ponder this / Other paths I left untrod / Where did I begin?
  • Rinkah: Must have been something when you were younger, I'd wager.
  • Mitama: Mother! I have an idea! Perhaps we should now / Try to solve this together / Mother and daughter.
  • Rinkah: Nice try, but you're not fooling me. We're going to the meeting. Now grab your things.

  • Rinkah: Hey Mitama. What's up?
  • Mitama: Cryptic Memory / She leaves only threads behind / For us to follow.
  • Rinkah: Huh? What are you on about this time?
  • Mitama: To reclaim the past, we begin by seizing upon a single vivid memory? A clue. This in turn reveals other connected memories to us, forming a thread. And we follow this thread until the object of our search is found. My first poem is the beginning of one such thread. And it is here. Somewhere.
  • Rinkah: Ah, I see. And what is the object of this particular search of yours?
  • Mitama: Before there was verse / Mitama existed not / Wherefore Mitama? I want to understand why I am who I am. And I was not myself until I learned poetry. If I find my earliest self, I find my now-self. In the beginning, the end. Therefore, the search.
  • Rinkah: Ah, I see. You've been thinking about our last conversation. And you think your first poem will help you learn what got you into poetry. Have you found it?
  • Mitama: No. How long 'til it's found? / In a blizzard of poems / A single snowflake. It has been many days. But I am determined.
  • Rinkah: Any way I can help?
  • Mitama: Perhaps if you could— Ah! Wait! I may have found it! / The Alpha of Mitama / Omega, my search.
  • Rinkah: Well, go on then. Read it!
  • Mitama: Mother does not come / I count the days passing by / Days without number.
  • Rinkah: I-I don't...
  • Mitama: Yes, I remember now. You'd become very busy, and my caretakers told me you couldn't come to visit. I began writing poems to comfort myself while you were gone. Left waiting for you / My world turned inward to verse / Structure to sorrow.
  • Rinkah: I'm so sorry, Mitama. Can you ever forgive me?
  • Mitama: Don't apologize / You had a duty, a cause / The world needed you. I am sorry. I didn't want to upset you. And I want you to know I understand. You fought to protect me. I know that now.
  • Rinkah: Maybe...but maybe I could have done better. Anyways, we still haven't figured out why you turned to poetry in particular. How about we write your caretakers?
  • Mitama: More clues to my past / Hidden in old memories / The search continues. You're right. They are bound to know something. I will draft a letter immediately.
  • Rinkah: Er...maybe I should help with that. I think they'll appreciate some simpler language...

  • Rinkah: What? This can't be right!
  • Mitama: Mother? Is that the letter from my caretakers? Please, let me see it / Perhaps the source is revealed / The search now bears fruit.
  • Rinkah: A-ah...I'm not really sure how to say this.
  • Mitama: What is it?
  • Mitama: It says here that I'm the one who got you started on poetry.
  • Mitama: I don't understand / You have no great love for it / What else do they say?
  • Rinkah: I don't think I understand yet either. Give me a moment... Hm.
  • Mitama: Yes?
  • Rinkah: Your caretakers say that I used to teach you the lyrics of the lullabies I sang you. You had trouble singing, so I taught you by reciting them. Eventually, you forgot they were songs, but you never forgot the lyrics themselves. And when you wanted to find more things like them, you naturally asked for poetry. Luckily, they had many books of traditional verses—tanka and haiku especially. Dozens, from the sound of it. And after that...well, the rest is history.
  • Mitama: Like objects in mist / These memories are hazy / But they could be real.
  • Rinkah: Your caretakers decided to give you books on classic poetry - specifically haikus. Dozens and dozens of books, it seems.
  • Mitama: Mystery dispelled / I know now the catalyst / My mother the cause. But to think that so much of my life has hinged on a simple misunderstanding... A single mistake / Like ripples on a still lake / Echoes across life. But this means—
  • Rinkah: Yes. You've got your mother to blame for this little obsession of yours. And, more to the point, your mother has your mother to blame for it.
  • Mitama: Heehee. So it wouldn't be right for you to take my books away, would it? Yourself the wellspring / Can the source of the river / Choose to flow upstream?
  • Rinkah: I know when I'm beat. But try not to let it get in the way of your duties, OK?
  • Mitama: Poetry and song / Daughter and mother allied / Invincible bond!
  • Rinkah: Haha. I think that one's a keeper, Mitama.

  • Rinkah: No need to be so modest. Now, what can I help with? Need any heavy lifting done?
  • Caeldori: Thank you, Mother. I appreciate the offer, truly, but I have nothing for you to do. All I've left is the inventory.
  • Rinkah: Then I'll help with that! With an army this size, taking inventory must take a while.
  • Caeldori: Well, see, about that-
  • Rinkah: Here, let me see the inventory. We just have to confirm the numbers match, right?
  • Caeldori: I-Hey! Would you please give that back? It's very important.
  • Rinkah: This isn't an inventory. What is it? Some kind of map?
  • Caeldori: Er, yes, something like that. It's a plan for the armory I drew up a little while ago. If the supplies are stored according to the plan, they can be counted very easily. It takes a fraction of the time and...only one person. I'm sorry, Mother.
  • Rinkah: I see... And you're sure there's nothing else I can do?
  • Caeldori: Um... Oh! I prepared some tea earlier. Please, have a seat and enjoy a cup or two! It's right over there! In the corner.
  • Rinkah: I- All right, fine. (Gods, I feel like a child...and by the hands of my own daughter, no less.)

  • Hoshidan: It shall be done milady.

  • Caeldori: Wah! M-Mother! I didn't see you! Wait, what were you even doing?! It's dangerous to hide in there like that! We put weapons in those barrels!
  • Rinkah: I'm fine. I was just watching you work and didn't want to interrupt.
  • Caeldori: ...Is something wrong? You seem a little off today.
  • Rinkah: Oh, no. I just swung by to help out, but it looks like you still don't need any. I'm impressed. No hesitation. Precise, rapid orders. Singular focus. In fact, you were so impressive, I couldn't think of any way to contribute. So I guess I'll just sit right over here and drink my tea while you work. Again. *siiiip*

  • Caeldori: The last time we talked...you said that I was just like Father. But I don't think that's true. Fighting, riding, speaking-it all comes to him as naturally as breathing. I'm not like that.
  • Rinkah: What do you mean?
  • Caeldori: I mean that...I have never seen Father work hard at anything. But I have seen you do so. I know that you trained for years to acquire your skills. It was your work ethic that gave me the courage to improve myself. You made me understand that I didn't need to be naturally perfect to succeed in life. Everything I have achieved. I have done through hard work. Not natural genius. So thank you, Mother. I would not be who I am without you.
  • Rinkah: No... Thank you. You've made me very happy. I... I don't know what to say.

  • Rinkah: I need to ask you a question, and you'd better be honest with me. Understand?
  • Rhajat: O-OK... What is it?
  • Rinkah: Did you cast a spell on some villagers recently?
  • Rhajat: They wanted me to perform a good-luck ritual for their upcoming harvest. I didn't really want to, but they were so insistent that I gave in eventually.
  • Rinkah: Well they've been complaining about you lately.
  • Rhajat: Why would they complain about me? I just complied with their request...
  • Rinkah: Well, they say there's an old illness going around. It's something they've never seen before.
  • Rhajat: I don't know why that would be. But sometimes even benign magic can have unintended side effects...
  • Rinkah: The villagers are saying that your spell is entirely to blame for this affliction. Rhajat, I don't think you'd ever want to hurt anybody. But I need to know more about this enchantment you used. If it did make them sick, then we need to find a way to counter the effect. I won't have the villagers spreading rumors about you.
  • Rhajat: Those villagers will be wary of me regardless of what I do. Maybe it doesn't really matter...
  • Rinkah: What's that supposed to mean?

  • Rinkah: Don't worry about it. I've got it covered.

  • Rhajat: I have a keen awareness of events unfolding around me. Do you feel obliged to come to their aid because they blame me?
  • Rinkah: No, you don't understand.
  • Rhajat: Then what is driving you to help them?
  • Rinkah: I can't just sit and stare while people are suffering around me. That's why I'm helping the villagers. Don't worry. It has nothing to do with you.
  • Rhajat: You didn't have to sneak around behind my back though...
  • Rinkah: Listen, I'm sorry. We can talk more later if you want, but I have to get going. The villagers are waiting on me to deliver these supplies.
  • Rhajat: Wait... I know that I'm not responsible for this illness. I'll be able to explain everything soon. But I need a little more time...

  • Rhajat: Here, Mother. I wanted to show you what I've been working on.
  • Rinkah: What are these? Medicinal herbs? Can we use them to cure the villagers' illness?
  • Rhajat: Yes. It took longer than I would have liked to mature. I even had to use a bit of light magic to encourage the herb's growth. If I could have brought it to you sooner, I would have. I just needed to make sure it worked first. I'm sorry...
  • Rinkah: So how did you discover this cure exactly?
  • Rhajat: It took some time. When the villagers asked me to cast a spell for them. I noticed something strange... There were several people who were coughing profusely. A few of them also look quite pale...
  • Rinkah: So the villagers were already sick before you even cast that spell!
  • Rhajat: Yes, exactly. I had heard that there was a rare herb that naturally fights illness. I managed to track down some seeds and got to sprouting them right away.
  • Rinkah: Why didn't you just talk to the villagers? If you'd spoken up, they never would have thought you were responsible!
  • Rhajat: My sole concern wasn't their perception of me. It was their health. The most important thing was to find a cure before the sickness got out of control. All I really cared about was you trusting me.
  • Rinkah: I can't believe how foolish you are!
  • Rhajat: Um, why are you hugging me? We need to get this herb to the villagers right away.
  • Rinkah: Quiet! Let me enjoy this moment. You headstrong girl...
  • Rhajat: Ow, Mother! Let me go already. It hurts when you squeeze me so tightly. Listen, you should help me turn this herb into a tea. That way we can distribute it quickly.
  • Rinkah: Of course, you're right. Follow me!

With Ignatius (Son)

  • Ignatius: Hello, Mother. I was wondering if you could help me with something...
  • Rinkah: What did you have in mind?
  • Ignatius: You know...not that I'm here it sees a little silly. Forget about it. I can take care of it.
  • Rinkah: Worm problems, right? Or did a spider make its web across your tent flap?
  • Ignatius: It's a spider riding a worm. If it had just been a spider OR a worm. I could have handled it, I swear!
  • Rinkah: How? You've come crying to me about bugs ever since you were little. Enough of this. Let me get my club, and we'll sort it out straightaway.
  • Ignatius: Oh, gods...please do NOT squish them. Just take them somewhere far, far away. This will be the last time, I promise.
  • Rinkah: Hmm... Listen close, Ignatius. I'm the mother. You're the son. When you need things, you ask me, and I do it.
  • Ignatius: I know. I really am working up the courage to handle my own bugs, you know?
  • Rinkah: Heh... You'll get there. We'll say for sake of argument this is the last bug I smash.
  • Ignatius: No, I said DON'T squish them! I don't want bug guts on my things!

B Support

  • Ignatius: Good day, Mother. Do you have a moment?
  • Rinkah: Yeah. Something wrong? Ah, of course... More insect incursions.
  • Ignatius: No! I told you, I'm going to deal with my own bugs from now on. Why, just the other day a ladybug landed on my forearm... And, through gritted teeth, I was able to gently brush it away.
  • Rinkah: So how can your mom help you?
  • Ignatius: Well, it is about my tent. There's something wrong with it.
  • Rinkah: I noticed that. If you pitch it with the flap to the north, the sun won't-
  • Ignatius: No, that's not the issue. It's just... I believe my tent is haunted. As I was drifting off to sleep, I was sure I could see a face staring at me!
  • Rinkah: I should have guessed. If it's not one thing, it's the other.
  • Ignatius: MOTHER! This is no laughing matter.
  • Rinkah: You have to admit, it's always either bugs or ghosts with you.
  • Ignatius: I mean, I don't believe in evil spirits. I know they don't exist, but... What if they do?
  • Rinkah: Hmhm...round and round we go. I've been hearing this since you were tiny.
  • Ignatius: I'm sorry. You've always been so tough. You must be disappointed to have raised a coward.
  • Rinkah: Don't get mopey about it. It's comforting, in a way, to see that part of you never changes.
  • Ignatius: Really? You mean that?
  • RInkah: I'm serious. When you have kids, you'll learn to love even their flaws. You'll always be my Ignatius, warts and all.
  • Ignatius: Heh. Well, thank you, Mother.
  • Rinkah: One thing, though... You don't still sleep with those stuffed dolls, do you?
  • Ignatius: Yes, what of it?
  • Rinkah: It's not that I mind. Just occurred to me who this face you saw might belong to.
  • Ignatius: Oh. OH! Never mind.

  • Ignatius: Hello, Mother. I have something for you.
  • Rinkah: Hey, nice charm. You make it?
  • Ignatius: Yes. It's meant to bring you good luck.
  • Rinkah: Thanks, Ignatius. I have to ask, though-what inspired you to do it now?
  • Ignatius: It's just... I don't want you to die.
  • Rinkah: Hmph...
  • Ignatius: I know I shouldn't worry about it, but... I get scared every time you fight. If something were to happen to you...
  • Rinkah: The way I figure, if I let anything happen to me, I deserved it.
  • Ignatius: Yes, and I know how tough you are. But I still worry. You're the only person who accepts me just the way I am. I...I just can't stand the thought of losing you.
  • Rinkah: Dry those eyes. You're practically swimming in people who like you just fine. Do I need to name them? I'm sure you can think of at least one or two. They'll be there for you if you let them. Even when I'm not.
  • Ignatius: You're right. Of course.
  • Rinkah: So don't be afraid. When my time comes, you won't want for people to look after you.
  • Ignatius: I know. I'll try to be stronger. I'm sorry if I worried you.
  • Rinkah: Like I have something more important to do?
  • Ignatius: Fair enough. Just promise me that you'll live a long, healthy life, OK?
  • Rinkah: Heh. I was planning on doing that anyway, kid.

  • Velouria: Mom? Where are you, Mom?! *sniff* *sniff* *SNIFF* Ooh, I think she's this way...
  • Rinkah: Oh, it's you, Velouria. What's going on?
  • Velouria: Mom! There you are! I knew my nose wouldn't fail me in my time of need.
  • Rinkah: What is it you wanted from me?
  • Velouria: Mom... May I have a hug? A big one? Right now?
  • Rinkah: *Blush* Hmph... Fine, get over here. I hope no one thinks I've gone soft...
  • Velouria: *sniff* *sniff* Mom, you smell so sweet. Just like a flower!
  • Rinkah: *Blush* A flower?! No! That's the last thing I should smell like!
  • Velouria: *SNIFF* *SNIFF* I'm getting sleepy just being in your arms, Mom... *sniff* *sniff*
  • Rinkah: Is that all it takes with you? Hmm
  • Velouria: Mom... Don't ever go anywhere... I want to stay with you...forever... *sniff* *sniff* Zzz...
  • Rinkah: *Smiles* What are you talking about? Where do you think I'm going?
  • Velouria: Zzz... I love you, Mom... Zzzzzz...

  • Rinkah: Up and at ' em, Velouria. It's time to eat.
  • Velouria: ...
  • Rinkah: You seem miles away. Something on your mind?
  • Velouria: Mom, I've been thinking... You shouldn't be here.
  • Rinkah: Come again?
  • Velouria: I want you to go somewhere far away from here. Somewhere safe. If you stay here, something bad might happen!
  • Rinkah: I agree. It's one of the things a warrior has to be prepared for at any time.
  • Velouria: I know! That's why you have to go far away from this place!
  • Rinkah: You're not telling me to turn tail and run, are you? It's never been my style.
  • Velouria: I don't like the sound of it either, but it's the only way to keep you safe. Missing you is a lot better than losing you forever.
  • Rinkah: All right, Velouria, that's enough nonsense. Your mom's no coward. i have unfinished business here, and I can't just abandon our friends.
  • Velouria: I don't care about the others---only you! You're my mom... I need you to be safe.
  • Rinkah: Don't get me wrong. You're my daughter, and I love you. It's that love that gives me the fire to go out into battle every day.
  • Velouria: I don't understand...
  • Rinkah: We're trying to make the world safe for you.
  • Velouria: ...
  • Rinkah: I get that you worry about me. But I can't let that keep me off the battlefield.
  • Velouria: Mom... May I hug you for a while?
  • Rinkah: I suppose so.
  • Velouria: You smell so nice, Mom... Don't...don't ever leave me... *sniff*
  • Rinkah: I'd sooner abandon the fight than abandon you, Velouria.

  • Velouria: Mom... MOM?!
  • Rinkah: Is sometyhing going on, Velouria?
  • Velouria: I need to hug you some more.
  • Rinkah: Wh---? Again?! Fine. Let's do this...
  • Velouria: You smell more like a flower every day, Mom.
  • Rinkah: I'll never get used to you saying that...
  • Velouria: Mom...I'm sorry for saying such funny things the other day. I won't ever tell you to go away again. I think I understand why you refused.
  • Rinkah: Forget it. I'm just glad you could see things my way.
  • Velouria: I decided I'm going to get stronger. Strong enough to protect you! You're the most important mom in the whole world, so I have to watch over you.
  • Rinkah: Now you know how I feel. I'm always trying to improve myself, so I can keep you safe. Because you, of everyone here, are the one person I couldn't stand to see suffer.
  • Velouria: Is it OK if I hug you a little longer?
  • Rinkah: Hey, if that's what you want.
  • Velouria: Can I hug you tighter and tighter until we both explode from love?
  • Rinkah: D-don't make this weird, Velouria.
  • Velouria: My mom, the desert rose... I love you so much...I'll love you forever and ever, Mom...
  • Rinkah: And I'll love you. With all the force and the heat of the desert winds...
