“Hey! I'm not small! I'm a dangerous mercenary!”
—Rolf talking to Marcia in a support conversation

Rolf (ヨファ Yofa, Lofa in the Japanese version) is a playable character in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He is the youngest member of the Greil Mercenaries and the younger brother of Oscar and Boyd. He is a mature, loyal young man. He was first taught how to use a bow by Shinon, so that, like Mist, he could be of some use to the group rather than staying behind every time the company went to work. Shinon told Rolf during his training never to tell anyone who taught him, and he remained faithful to that promise, although his eldest brother, Oscar, could detect the secret. Shinon never told anyone, either, respecting Rolf's oath.

A special Info Conversation reveals that he is Oscar's and Boyd's half-brother: they share the same father and have two different mothers. When Rolf was an infant, she abandoned her sons and their bedridden father for another love interest, leaving Oscar to take care of the family. Although Rolf is given the opportunity to live with his mother, and she begs for him to return, he chooses to stay with his brothers, saying that she is a stranger to him, considering the fact that she abandoned him, his brothers and his sickly father when he was a baby just to be with another man, and that he would prefer staying in the company of what he considers his true family: Oscar, Boyd, and the rest of the Greil Mercenaries.

He can perform a Triangle Attack with his brothers under certain conditions, being that Oscar and Boyd are upgraded classes with the ability to use bows. This is a default setting in Radiant Dawn (keep in mind that Oscar must be a Silver Knight, and Boyd must be equipped with a crossbow of some kind), but optional in Path of Radiance.

Overall

Rolf joins as an underleveled character a third of the way into the game. It takes a bit of effort to get him up to par with the rest of the characters and is restricted to E-rank Bows, but he can become fairly competent at combat within 5-6 chapters; this seems rather long, but this is also characteristic with a number of other characters that join a at the same chapter or a couple of chapters after Rolf, such as Nephenee, Marcia and Kieran. However, Rolf's strength will still be a bit lacking towards more durable units until he levels a couple of times after promotion. If not seeking to use Rolf anyways, it is recommended to put a number of levels into him so he can talk to Shinon in Chapter 18, which is needed to recruit him.

The other available choice for Sniper is Shinon. By the time Shinon is recruited, Rolf's strength is noticeably higher than Shinon's, whose paltry base stats by the time he rejoins is offset by his fantastic growth rates. In the end though, Rolf's strength will make him much easier to use for the rest of the game than Shinon, whose strength is still fairly low until he is roughly around level 15.

Overall

In Radiant Dawn, Shinon joins at the same time as Rolf and at a higher level, but Shinon and Rolf both compete in different stats. Rolf has higher HP, luck, and higher strength, but lower defenses, Speed, and much less skill. Compared to Leonardo, Rolf has higher HP, strength, and speed, but much less resistance, luck, and skill. It is advised to take at least one Marksman with you to the final chapter so you can use the powerful Double Bow, so who you end up using as your Marksman is completely preference.

Quotes

Etymology

Rolf is a real name and has its own meaning, but it is an alteration of "Rudolf", which means 'fame' and 'wolf' in its Germanic roots.

Trivia

  • Before Rolf is recruited, he has a unique class called Child.
  • In Radiant Dawn, Rolf says in a base conversation with Boyd that he believes skill is more important than strength, even though his growth rate for strength (75%) is higher than the one for his skill (45%).
  • Rolf is voiced by a woman (Yū Asakawa) in Radiant Dawn.
