“It’s all coming back to me now. It was only for a short time, but you were an important friend. When you suddenly disappeared, Father went to the royal palace and didn’t return. I later learned that he had been put into jail. At that moment I had lost everything, and I felt like it was all your fault, Enteh. That’s why I wanted to forget all about you. Enteh... I was still young back then... the sorrow was too much for one person to handle...”
—Runan to Enteh

Runan (リュナン Ryunan) is a playable character and one of the two protagonists of TearRing Saga: Utna Heroes Saga. He is the seventeen-year-old heir of the Dukedom of Razelia and the son of Lord Glamdr. He is known as the Hero of Granada for defending it from the Zoa Empire for one entire year. He is also the best friend of Holmes, and the two of them view each other as brothers.

Profile

Years before the story begins, Runan was introduced to Enteh by his father and quickly became a close friend to her. During one of their three days together, she began crying out of fear that she would transform into a dragon, kill many people, and bring ruin to Reeve. Runan comforted her by making a promise to always protect her. However, they separated for reasons unknown to him and therefore he could not fulfill his promise.

When the reborn Zoa Empire invades Reeve, Runan and Holmes fight to defend Granada for one year. Once they realize that their efforts are useless, they escape to the Kingdom of Wellt, where they go on their separate ways. While Holmes travels across the world as an adventurer, Runan seeks out assistance from Wellt in hopes of eventually retaking Razelia. Early in the game, he rescues Sasha from the soldiers serving Duke Codha and makes an agreement to help her retake Wellt. During a battle against the Taurus Bandits, Runan reunites with Enteh, whom he does not remember. However, she recognizes him immediately and decides not to reveal her identity.

With aid from Duke Merlon of Verge, Runan and Sasha successfully liberate Wellt and imprison Codha to await the judgement of King Loffaru. Afterwards, he meets with Prince Richard of Marl and Princess Tia of Leda, who are also leading an army against the Zoa Empire.

After defeating Prince Julius of Canaan and liberating Reeve, Runan discovers Enteh's true identity as Princess Maeve. He also realizes that she is the girl from his past and becomes angry towards her for refusing to reveal herself and accepting her betrothal to Duke Tatus. As a result, Runan and Enteh part ways. While he travels to Nolzeria to meet with Prince Sennet of Canaan, she secretly follows him and eventually transforms into Muse to protect him from Rakis.

Once Runan learns that Enteh fallen into the captivity of the Gerxel Church, he travels to the Temple of Water, where he unseals the ☆Seiken Reeve using the Ring of Reeve. Despite his best efforts, he is ultimately unable to save Enteh, as she is sacrificed to Gerxel alongside Katri and Neyfa. After Gwenchaos's transformation into Gerxel, Runan teams up with Holmes, Sennet, and Tia to defeat Gerxel with a combined attack. Once Enteh is resurrected by Miradona alongside the other fallen shamans and Richard, Runan confesses his love for her.

In the epilogue, Runan refuses to allow Tatus to take Enteh's hand in marriage and successfully stops him with the support of his allies. After parting with most of his soldiers, Runan boards the Sea Lion to travel around the world alongside Holmes, Katri, and Shigen.

Personality

Runan is formal, honorable, and heroic, as befitting for a noble like him. He is actively suppressing his emotions because he thinks that he must do so in order to win the war. However, his emotions slip out whenever Enteh is in danger. Initially, he does not concern himself with women and romance, instead focusing on his battles. Over the course of the story, he learns to accept that tragedies will inevitably happen in a war. He credits everything that he learns from experience to his advisor, Eugen.

Overall

Runan is the first lord in the game and thus he is required to be fielded in every chapter in his route. He usually has average offense, although his Rapier is quite useful against heavy-armored enemies in the early stages of the game. His growths are also well-balanced, so he is not likely to fall behind or excel in any particular stat. He has somewhat low movement prior to his promotion, which can cause him to be left behind by characters who have superior movement and stats such as Narron. After his promotion, he will be above average due to his improved movement and stats. It is recommended to train him because he is a lord and required for the final boss.

Quotes

“...Kuh...So my journey ends here huh...”
—Runan's death quote
“Clear your mind of distractions, lord Runan...You will collapse if you aren't completely focused...!”
—Eugen

Trivia

  • Runan originally had blue hair, in line with early Lords such as Marth and Sigurd. After the game was renamed from Emblem Saga to avoid copyright issues, his hair color was changed to brown, although this made him resemble Leif more.
