A Thunder Sage is a promoted version of a Thunder Mage. They are more powerful and can wield more powerful spells, such as Bolting.

The only playable thunder sage in both Radiant Dawn and Path of Radiance is Ilyana, who starts off as a Thunder Mage. Ilyana , being the only possible thunder sage in the game, she is the only unit who can use the very powerful magic tome arcthunder because she is the only character who can achieve the SS rank in thunder magic as an archsage
