The trade command

Trading is an action available in most Fire Emblem games. As the name suggests, it lets two characters trade their weapons and items. Trading can only be initiated with allied units you are adjacent to, allied units you've rescued, and (in Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 only) enemy units you've captured. Trading does not end a character's turn; they can still perform such commands as attacking, using staves, shoving, and others after trading, and mounted units can move again after trading. Enemies in Thracia 776 could also trade items with each other although this is only at very rare times. In Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, enemies trade usually vulneraries when they have low HP.

Some tactical uses of trading include:

  • Having a wounded character take a vulnerary or other healing item from another character to restore their HP.
  • Re-equipping a unit who has already finished their turn by trading with them, then moving a different weapon to the top slot of their inventory (which will then automatically be equipped).
  • Taking a Sleep or Silence staff from a unit who already used it this turn, then using it again with the other unit to put more enemies to sleep or silence them.

In Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, you could have a unit sell an item at a pawn shop at a castle. Then another unit can buy it back from them. This is similar to trading, only it costs half the item's monetary worth.
