“A chaotic night in the woods brings tremors and terrors, but a swordsman named Marth comes to the rescue. Back in Ylisstol, Robin meets Emmeryn.”
—Opening Narration

Unwelcome Change is Chapter 1 of Fire Emblem Awakening. This chapter takes place on the map West of Ylisstol. Completing this chapter will unlock the ability to view support conversations.

Story[]

While on the march to Ylisstol, night falls, so the Shepherds set up camp for the night. After a hearty meal of bear, which neither Lissa nor Frederick eat, they lay down to rest.

In the middle of the night, Chrom and Lissa wake up, sensing something is amiss. They go off to investigate, but get caught in a earthquake that causes lava to spew from the ground and set the forest ablaze. Chrom and Lissa manage to escape the conflagration, but then spot a strange portal in the sky, which drops two undead beings in front of them.

Chrom manages to fight one of them off, but the other corners Lissa. Lissa is saved when a masked man interposes himself and blocks the attack. Chrom and the masked man then work together to defeat the monster, but more show up. Fortunately, Frederick and Robin arrive, and a bit later, they are joined by Sully and Virion, and together, they fight off the monsters.

The masked man introduces himself as "Marth" and warns the Shepherds about how the world is teetering on the brink of catastrophe, then departs. The Shepherds hasten to Ylisstol and are relieved to find it undamaged. They spy the Exalt, Emmeryn, walking around the town, and Chrom offers to introduce Robin to her.

At the introduction, Chrom informs his sister about the attack on Southtown and the deathly creatures sighted in the forest. With Chrom being summoned to a council regarding them, Lissa decides to show Robin to the Shepherd's home base.

Strategy[]

Secret Book (Artwork)
Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

To begin, there are a few things that are worth knowing about this chapter.

  • Virion and Sully will appear at the start of Turn 2.
  • Be aware of the enemy Fighter wielding the Hammer, as he can take most of Frederick's HP in a single attack.
  • All of the enemies in this chapter will move from the start.
  • It is advisable that Frederick receives the Elixir from Virion before the end of this chapter.

While the prologue should not have been too difficult, this is the true start what the game has to offer. Take note of the enemy placement and the starting positions. Instead of Barbarians, the enemies are Fighters, which are mostly slower. The easiest way to do this chapter is to have Frederick wield the Bronze Sword paired up with Chrom; he only needs 13 speed to be able to double Fighters.

There are generally two options available for this chapter, Pair Up Chrom with Frederick or Pair Up Frederick with Robin. They can wait on a fort and handle most of the enemies. Even the Fighter with the Hammer will only have about a 20% hit chance on him if Frederick is paired with Chrom and has the Bronze Sword.

Everyone else should keep out of range, but they should be able to dispatch the Mercenary to the south at the very least. On Turn 2, when Sully and Virion appear, Sully will only take about 9 damage from each hit from the Mercenary when she is on a forest.

The boss can be a bit tough, especially with his 1~2 range and the forest terrain hindering movement. However, he only has 9 Speed, so he should not be too much of a danger.

Trivia[]

  • There is an error in the cutscene "Cataclysm", after Marth calls for help, the Falchion's hilt can be seen behind Chrom's left shoulder when it actually be held on his right hand.
