“Rebel pup! You dare defy Dolhr? Then writhe in the fires of Bolganone!”
—Volzhin's battle quote

Volzhin is the boss of Chapter 12 in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem (Book 1), and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon. He carries the Bolganone tome, which he will drop when he is defeated. His powerful magic can make him very difficult to defeat. It is stated by Camus when you meet him in a village that Volzhin stole a Thoron tome from Boah, which Camus himself stole later.

Subjective: The following part of this article is based upon the editor's personal experiences and opinions, and therefore may not be applicable for all readers.

In the original Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Volzhin is easily the hardest boss in the game. Most of the bosses that you have faced consisted of Slow, Armored Units that can easily be dealt with using Armor-Effective Weapons or Magic. Volzhin in comparison is a much faster enemy, boasting a staggering 14 Speed, and has an extremely hard hitting tome in Bolganone. Since Constitution isn't a thing in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light, Volzhin doubles almost all of your units with his deceptively fast 8 AS. Even faster units like Merric or Hardin can only tie Volzhin at best or even get outright 2HKOed by him. It also doesn't help that Volzhin also has 22 HP and lacks the Armored Weakness that your other units have, making him surprisingly bulky.

The most reliable strategy against Volzhin is to use weapons with a high Critical Chance. Hardin is arguably the best candidate to do this with the Killing Edge. If Hardin manages to proc 3 Speed Points and 2 Strength Points (the latter being unlikely with Hardin's poor strength growth), then he stands a chance of taking out Volzhin without needing a critical. Otherwise, Hardin would need to crit Volzhin on his Player Phase. Merric could also be a decent choice for a boss killer, but he requires Warp to reach Volzhin and requires 6 Speed procs to double him (which is unreliable with Merric's average speed growth).

Trivia[]

  • He is one of the few human bosses in the Archanea Series that is from Dolhr.
  • In Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light (and thus the series as a whole,) Book 1 of Mystery of the Emblem and Hard Mode of Shadow Dragon, he is the first boss who uses Magic as a weapon.
  • Volzhin has one of the more unique boss portraits in Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light; while still an alteration of Jiol, he is depicted with a robe instead of armor.
